2015 World University Games: Day 12 roundup

Korea topped the Universiade medals table with 47 golds, 32 silver and 39 bronze, followed by Russia and China on Monday. Japan settled at fourth place with 25 golds 25 silver and 35 bronze medals.

Son Yeon-jae from Korea became a triple gold medallist by winning two more golds in the rhythmic gymnastics at Universiade Gwangju. She had won the third earlier on Sunday in individual all-around gymnastics. The third gold of the day for Korea was bagged in taekwondo.

India slipped two steps down to 34th spot in the table with total of 5 medal (1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze) haul. So far 64 countries have won at least one medal. Kyrgyzstan with one bronze medal found itself at the base of the table.

The total medal count for top five Nations stands as follows.

  1. South Korea – 47 gold; 32 silver; 29 bronze
  2. Russia – 34 gold; 39 silver; 49 bronze
  3. China – 34 gold; 22 silver; 16 bronze
  4. Japan – 25 gold; 25 silver; 35 bronze
  5. USA – 20 gold; 15 silver; 18 bronze
  1. India – 1 gold; 1 silver; 1 bronze

The 2015 Gwangju Universiade, with 64 countries participating in 21 athletics events, opened on July 3, 2015 and is scheduled to end on July 14, 2015. The last event will be men’s water polo on July 14, 2015.

The World University Games are organised by International University Sports Federation (FISU) which is open to athletes between the ages of 17 to 28. The next summer Universiade will be held in Taipei,Taiwan August 19-30, 2017.
