Singapore, 21 Aug 2010:

This day will be vividly remembered in the Indian athletics history because today Arjun has brought us first ever medal in Athletics in the Youth Olympic Games. Starting as favorite to win the gold, Arjun finished on the second place with a throw of 62.92m, below his personal best of 64.09m. Indian athlete has never won athletic medal in the Olympic Games movement till today. Earlier in the women’s 5km walk final Khuhbir Kaur finished on the 13th place with 25:30.27sec. Now all eyes are on Durgesh Kumar who will be competing in the 400m Hurdles final.

Before this, he registered a best throw of 63.90m in the qualifying round ahead of South Africa’s Jacques du Plessis (63.17m) and assured a place for the country on 17th August 2010.

Arjun, the victor in this year’s Youth Nationals at Coimbatore with a personal best throw of 64.09m on April 23 went on to win the Asian area qualification at Singapore a month later by hurling the discus to 63.97m.

Incidentally Arjun won the gold medal in the inaugural Asian Youth Games at the same venue in last year
