At the end of the 10th day of the games at Gwangju Universiade, South Korea stayed on top in the medal race with gold medals coming from golf, table tennis and tennis. Korea added three gold medals to its tally on Saturday. The hosts have 35 golds and a total of 82 medals.

Russia jumped one step up to reach at number two in the table rankings with 29 gold, 33 silver and 40 bronze medals. The Russians’ were able to add three golds to their medal haul on Saturday. Koneva Ekaterina and Evsiko Anton bagged gold in the athletics and swimming category, whereas the third gold was won by women’s volleyball team.

Meanwhile, the Chinese were not able to retain their 2nd position in the table. With only one gold won by Zhang Hua in taekwondo, China was placed at third spot at the end of tenth day’s play. With this China’s total medal tally reached 58 with 29 gold 16 silver and 13 bronze medals.

India stands at 30th spot in the table with the total of 5 medals – 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze – at the end of the day’s play. So far, 61 countries have won at least one medal. Malaysia with one bronze medal settles at base of the table.

In other major developments in the games, the 2017 Winter Universiade to be hosted in Almaty, Kazakhstan, will add three new sports, International University Sports Federation (FISU) announced on Saturday. The new sports will include alpine skiing team competition, new parallel snowboard competition and aerials in addition to freestyle skiing. The decision came from a FISU executive committee meeting.

The 2015 Summer Universiade, which marks the 28th edition of the sports event, opened in the city of Gwangju on July 3, and will run until July 14. The World University Games are organised by International University Sports Federation (FISU) which is open to athletes between the ages of 17 to 28. Around 13000 athletes from 144 countries are competing for 272 gold medals in 21 sports at 38 venues.
