From Serie C1 side in 2004 to a club on the brink of eliminating one of Europe’s biggest clubs in the Champions League.
In this article, I pick out the four key points that were really important in the re-birth of what once was the best team in Italy.
1. THE FANS
The Napoli fans were always to be found. When they were even placed in Serie C by the FIGC, the Stadio San Paolo was always filled with fans.
Although they missed out promotion after losing a play-off to local rivals Avellino, Napoli averaged higher attendances than most Serie A clubs.
In one matchday, they broke the Serie C attendance record with 51,000 at one game. Outstanding records which really show the loyalty of the Neopolitans.
2. INVESTEMENT IN TALENT
Decades ago, this Southern Italian club had never been short of talent. Ciro Ferrara, Salvatore Bagni, Dino Zoff and Diego Maradona were all players that wore the Napoli shirt. Investment is always a key to a successful team especially in modern football.
In 2010, Napoli shocked the world by signing one of the most sought after strikers, Edinson Cavani. One year later, they signed one of the best midfielders in Europe, Gokhan Inler.
My point is that investment changed them greatly. You cannot get a good, well-built team without investment.
3. WALTER MAZZARRI
After Donadoni was sacked in late 2009 due to a string of poor results, former Sampdoria manager Walter Mazzarri was appointed.
In the first season under Mazzarri’s guidance, Napoli managed to finish sixth and qualify for the Europa League. The 10/11 season proved to be something phenomenal as Napoli managed to qualify for the 11/12 Champions League.
4. AURELIO DE LAURENTIIS
Anyone disagree? The major reason for the re-birth of Napoli. In 2004, when the club was struck with a massive debt, De Laurentiis became owner of the club and paid its debt.
In May 2006, De Laurentiis bought back the club’s history and to this day goes to every single game.
