Punjab teams look for Hockey double

Unbeaten Punjab teams are strong claimants for gold medals in both Girls’ and Boys’ sections of the Khelo India School Games. Halfway through the league stage they have not lost any match in either section.

Punjab Boys, who are in Pool A, have beaten Haryana 4-2 and thrashed Rajasthan 10-1 and will take on Odisha in their last league assignment on Sunday.

Punjab Girls who are in Pool B, have beaten Chandigarh 3-1 and Odisha 7-2 and will face Delhi in the last league fixture.

The two teams that could spoil Punjab’s party are Haryana in Girls section and Chandigarh in Boys section, as they are also unbeaten.

Among talented youngsters in Boys’ sections, Punjab’s Surdarshan Singh and Sarbjot, Chandigarh’s Hashim, Odisha’s Sudeep Chirmkao, Haryana’s Rimanshu, Delhi’s Sushil (Delhi), Karnataka’s KM Yashwanth and Chetan Suthar have been the most impressive.

Among the girls Punjab’s Simarjeet Kaur and Amardeep, Chandigarh's Akshita Yadav, Haryana’s Anu, Jharkhand’s Ropani Kumari and Rajni Kerketa, Odisha’s Aten Topno and Uttar Pradesh’s Mumtaz Khan and Simran Singh have been the pick.

In 16 matches (eight each in boys and girls section) it has rained goal with whopping 108 being scored (59 in boys section and 49 in Girls).

Odisha has scored 15 goals, the most in boys section while conceding five, while Punjab is next with 13 -2.

In girls section Jharkhand despite one win and a loss have fired 14 goals and conceded 4, Punjab is next with 10-3 goal tally.

Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Haryana take five gold each

As the athletics events came to end here at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the first Khelo India School Games the best athletes of the meet were crowned. Abhishek Singh of Uttar Pradesh, who won the first gold medal of these games with a throw of 18.73 metres, was declared as the best male athlete. Kerala’s Aparna Roy, who won the 100m hurdles event in 14.02 seconds, was adjudged the best women athlete.

Tamil Nadu had the most medals with a haul of 19 medals that included 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals. Kerala were behind them with a total of 17 medals that included 5 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals. Maharashtra also had five gold besides 4 silver and 2 bronze for a total of 11 medals.

Haryana dominates final day’s wrestling

Haryana, acknowledged as one of the country’s biggest boxing bastions, also dominated the final day of wrestling competitions at the inaugural Khelo India School Games here at the KD Jadhav Stadium on Sunday winning seven of the ten finals. Haryana made a clean sweep of all three Greco-Roman boys finals and the three finals in Girls freestyle on Sunday.

Srihari, Firdoush close swimming leg in style

Karnataka’s National Record Holder Srihari Natraj won two more Gold medals (50m backstroke & 100m freestyle) to take his final tally from the pool to six gold and one silver as the swimming competition of inaugural Khelo India School Games came to an end.

While Srihari dominated the Boys section, Firdoush Kayamkhani of Delhi won four gold in the Girls section at the Dr. Shyama Prasad Indoor Swimming Pool Stadium

Delhi, Himachal Pradesh emerge champions in Kabaddi

Delhi boys staged a superb rally in the final few minutes of an enthralling kabaddi final to beat Uttar Pradesh 33-27 and claim gold in the inaugural Khelo India School Games at the KD Jadhav Stadium here tonight. A raid by Sanjay Dabas, who played with the heart of a leader, was the turning point in the game.

Earlier, Himachal Pradesh girls rode on an all-court display to crown themselves champions in the. They beat back a late surge by Delhi to win the final 25-19 and break into riotous celebrations.

Final: Boys: Delhi beat Uttar Pradesh 33-27; Girls: Himachal Pradesh beat Delhi 25-19.
