Mumbai to host its first Underwater Festival on May 6 & 7

Mumbai is set to host its first Underwater Festival

Imagine a weekend where you get out of bed and take a short drive to a place close by where you can do some diving, some slacklining, get help on planning your next vacation with some adventure enthusiasts and meet some incredible like-minded travel and sports enthusiasts. Doesn't sound like Mumbai anymore? Ta-da! Introducing the first Mumbai Underwater Festival - the perfect avenue to beat the heat and unwind during the weekend.

After a successful first chapter in Pune, Finkick Adventures is hosting Mumbai’s first Underwater Festival on May 6 and 7 at Prabodhankar Thackrey Krida Sankul, Vile Parle. You can choose to attend the festival on either of the days and partake in a number of events. There is a range of activities in the underwater playground, like Octopush a.k.a Underwater Hockey, and a diver’s obstacle course (for certified divers only).

Don’t swim? Never dived before? Not a problem! Join us at the festival and experience your first few breaths underwater with our Try-A-Dive option. Pose for your underwater selfies…land is just so passé! Octopush is an international sport, introduced in India by Finkick Adventures, who aim to make the first Indian National Team for the International Championship in 2020.

30 people don the fin mask and snorkel to push a puck underwater and score a goal! It’s a game played on one breath and it's sure to take your breath away!

For your surface intervals (like the divers like to call it), a host of land activities will be organised. Ever been fascinated by the skills of tightrope walkers? At the festival, you can experience a show of skills from the foremost slackliners and trickliners from India. You can try walking the line with help from trainers. The festival will also host a ramp, so you can try your hand at skateboarding and spikeball.

There will be a host of fun-filled activities

Apart from bringing together the adventure loving community in Mumbai, there are two causes that the organisers of the Underwater Festival are extremely passionate about: Diving with Disability and Marine Conservation.

The folks at Mumbai Underwater Festival believe that Scuba Diving is a universal equaliser. Water is a weightless medium and when you’re underwater it doesn’t matter if you are missing a limb as the smallest flick of a hand or leg lets you move forward.

The organisers will showcase their work with persons with disability, including the blind, single amputee, paraplegic and quadriplegic individuals, in an attempt to prove that “everyone can dive” as well as raise awareness about the need for accessibility in our country, especially with regard to sports facilities.

Over 70% of the earth is covered with water, but the human race isn’t too bothered about its well-being. More than 80% of the sharks are on the brink of extinction and our ocean and marine ecosystems are threatened. The festival aims to create awareness towards ocean conservation by organising talks with various photographers, videographers, marine biologists and conservationists from around the world.

Apart from these activities, visitors will have the opportunity to engage with speakers from India and the global community of adventure enthusiasts. A photo exhibition of some of the wonders of the underwater world will also be on display - and it is bound to sweep you away into the world of marine life with awe.
