Chairperson and Founder of Reliance Foundation Nita Ambani has just been nominated as a member by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
With this, Mrs. Ambani becomes the first Indian woman ever to be recommended for the esteemed position. Her final appointment is subject to the IOC elections scheduled for the first week of August just before the wheels of Olympic Games are set in motion in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. Once the election process is carried out in her favour, the latest regulations will bring her on board to serve as a permanent member till the age of 70.
It goes without saying that Nita Ambani is a widely known figure in the country’s sporting circuit having reached out to millions of talented children via development programmes in basketball and tennis, besides the mainstream games like cricket and football, through the joint venture of Reliance Industries with IMG Group across India. Her contributions certainly haven’t gone unrecognized, which brings us to today’s announcement.
Speaking in response to the IOC’s decision, as reported by News18, here’s what Nita Ambani had to say:
"It is truly a great honour and privilege to be nominated by IOC. I am humbled that my name has been recommended for election as a member of the IOC. I believe in the power of sport to consolidate communities and bridge gaps between cultures and generations. My Foundation focuses on how sport can galvanise communities’ particularly in rural areas and develop great leadership. I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute in meeting the goals of the IOC.”
