Om Prakash finishes 19th in qualifying round

India’s lone shot putter in the Olympics, Om Prakash Singh blew his last throw and failed to qualify for the next round in the Men’s shot put event.

The top 12 athletes qualify to the next round if they clear the qualifying mark, or the best 12 athletes go through.

He was drafted in group B after being seeded 15th, and he needed anything above 20m to qualify for the next round.

He was nowhere close to the qualifying mark after his three throws – the third was judged as a foul.

On a day when the world No 20 shot putter was required to beat his personal best (20.69m), he barely was in touching distance from qualifying.

He finished 19th overall in a combined total of 40 shot putters from two groups.
