Review: Indians add to medal kitty on Day 5 of Asian Youth Games 2013

Indian athletes grabbed two medals(one gold and one silver) on the fifth day of the Asian Youth Games being held in Nanjing,China.

Young Indian weightlifter Rahul Venkat Ragala clinched the gold medal in men’s 77 kg weight category. Rahul lifted a total of 310 kg(142 kg in Snatch and 168 kg in clean & jerk) to win the second gold medal for India.

Kush Kumar had won the first gold for India in squash couple of days ago. Xingyu Lu of China, with a total lift of 285 kg, won the silver, whereas Pichet Maneesri of Thailand, with a total lift of 280 kg, won the bronze.

Second good news of the day came from shooting, where India’s Shainki Nagar won the silver medal in men’s 10m air pistol event. Shainki accumulated 195.3 points in the finals and missed the gold medal by a whisker to China’s Wu Jiayu, who finished the event with a total of 195.5 points. Refat Girfanov of Uzbekistan, with a total score of 174.7 points, won the bronze medal. Another Indian shooter Samarjit Singh, with a total score of 134.00, finished fifth in the same event.

In tennis, young Indian star Rutuja Bhosale, who caused a huge upset in the second round of the women’s singles by defeating top seeded Taipei player Ching-Win Hsu, lost 1-6, 1-6 to 5th seeded Yan Wang of China in the quarter-finals. In men’s singles, Garvit Batra defeated Roman Khassanov of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals. He will now play second seeded Jurence Mendoza of Philippines in the semi-final.

Gold medal favourite Meghana Balakrishna finished 4th in girls shot put event. In 100m hurdles event, Ankita Sunil Gosavi was disqualified in the finals. In girls 800m, Anjana Dhavalu Thamake has qualified for the finals, which will take place tomorrow.

In squash, the Indian men’s team defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 in a Group A match. The women’s team lost to Hong Kong 0-3 in a Group B match.

In swimming, Neil Contractor finished last in the semi-finals of the boys 50m freestyle event. In boys, 100m butterfly Rakshith Shetty finished 6th in the semi-finals.
