Indian athletes involved: Saikom Mirabai Chanu

The wait is almost over. We are less than a day away from the start of action in the 31st edition of the Olympic Games to be hosted by the Brazilian city of Rio De Janerio. A total of 118 Indian athletes will take to the sporting field across 15 events during the fortnight-long competition.

Kicking things off for India will be Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul, who will be competing in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event and will hope to repeat their exploits from the Commonwealth Games, where they won gold and silver respectively.

There will be action from the Men’s contingent as well, in the form of Jitu Rai, who will compete in the 10m Air Pistol event. He, too, will hope to clinch a medal in his maiden Olympics and further enhance his already growing reputation.

Rowing action will also begin on Saturday and India’s Dattu Bhokanal will be in action in the Men’s Singles Sculls event.

The Indian Men’s hockey team will kickstart their campaign, taking on Ireland Ireland in their first Pool B encounter.

The India Men’s as well as Women’s Doubles team, will also be in action with Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna taking on the Polish pairing of Marci Matkowski/Lukasz Kubot and Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare taking on Zhang Shuai/Peng Shuai of China.

The Table Tennis team will also begin their campaign on Saturday. All 4 paddlers- Manika Batra, Mouma Das, Soummyajit Ghosh and Sharath Kamal will play their first round matches on Saturday.

Note: All events will be telecasted live on Star Sports and hotstar.co. All India-centric events will be shown on DD National as well.

*the matches will be happen only if the Indian paddlers progress through to the next round.
