After suffering from gloom for almost the entire day, The country got some late night cheer thanks to a superb showing from Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who finished fourth in her vault final on Sunday night.

Athletics
In the Women’s marathon, OP Jaisha and Kavita Raut put in a disappointing performance, finishing 89th and 120th respectively. The former finished the race with a time of 2:47:19, while the latter clocked a time of 2:59.29.
Badminton
Along with tennis and gymnastics, the story of the day was shared by badminton, albeit for mixed reasons. Saina Nehwal provided the biggest disappointment of the day, losing to World Number 61 Maria Ulitina in straight games 18-21 19-21 to bow out in the group stage of the competition.
Kidambi Srikanth and PV Sindhu won their respective matches to progress through to the Round of 16 where they will take on Jan O Jorgenson and Tzu Ying Tai respectively.
Boxing
India’s Manoj Kumar bowed out in the Men’s 64kg category at the Round of 16 stage, losing to Fazliddin Gaibnazarov 3-0.
Gymnastics
The shining light of the day was provided by Dipa Karmakar, who finished 4th in her vault final with a score of 15.066. 0.20 behind third place Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland, who took home the bronze medal.
Golf
Anirban Lahiri finished in 5th position with a score of 75 while SSP Chaurasia finished in 13th with a score of 69.
Hockey
The Indian Men’s hockey lost their quarterfinal to Belgium 3-1 to bow out of medal contention. Akashdeep Singh scored the lone goal for India, but their opponents proved to be too good as India’s wait for that elusive hockey medal at an Olympics carries on.
Tennis
After failing to make it to the finals on Saturday, The Mixed Doubles duo of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna had another go at winning a medal on Sunday, when they took on the Czech Republican pairing of Radek Štpánek and Lucie Hradecká. But they once again faltered in the end, losing 6-1 7-5 to end their campaign without a medal.
