Indian swimmer Virdhawal Khade won the gold medal at the 50m men’s butterfly event at the 12th South Asian Games in Guwahati yesterday, and added to India’s mammoth medal tally.

With Khade’s win, India have now won a total of 1000 medals over the past 11 iterations of the tournament. Going into the tournament, India had amassed a total of 900 medals, and with stellar performances across sports and disciplines at the 12th edition of the South Asian Games, have taken that tally to 1000 – which they have now crossed with a series of gold and silver medal wins for Indian athletes today.

India currently lead the medals tally by a large margin going into Day 6 of the tournament. The highest ever medal haul the country has seen in the history of the games came in 2006, when the contingent came away with 214 medals – 118 gold, 59 bronze and 37 silver.

That has since been surpassed; India currently have 211 medals at this edition of the games, with 125 gold, 69 silver and 17 bronze. Several events have seen Indian athletes lock out the front row with both gold and silver, including at a series of events today.
