1980: Birthday of India’s Subramaniam Badrinath. The right-handed batsman, a prolific scorer in domestic cricket, has played in 2 Tests, 7 ODIs and one T20 Internationals for India.
1979: Ian Botham scored his 1000th Test run to complete the Test double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in his 21st Test to become the quickest to achieve the feat. Botham went on to become the second player (after Garry Sobers) to complete the Test triple of 1000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches.
2001: Pakistan equaled the record for most Test centuries when 5 of their batsmen hit tons against Bangladesh in Multan during the Asian Test Championship.
Faisal Iqbal was dismissed for 9, but Saeed Anwar, Taufeeq Umar, Inzamam Ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana and Abdul Razzaq made centuries against a hapless Bangladesh bowling attack. Pakistan won by an innings margin within 3 days.
1926: Jack Hobbs made a career best of 316 not out for Surrey against Middlesex. It was the highest score in a first-class match at Lord’s until Graham Gooch’s 333 against India in 1990. Jack Hobbs made a record 199 first class-centuries in his career.
1949: Worcester’s England legspinner Roly Jenkins took two hat-tricks in the same match in a home win against Surrey. He completed the feat on this day 1949 on the final day of the Test.
Football:
1972: Birthday of Czech Republic legend Pavel Nedved. Nedved’s impressive performance for Juventus saw him win the Ballon D’Or in 2003.
1983: Birth of Juventus winger Simone Pepe. Pepe joined the Turin club in 2010 and has won the Scudetto twice since.
2012: Sarah Crilly, who had been training with the Scotland women’s national team, was called up as a substitute despite being spectator for a match against Norway. She came on to the pitch after injuries ha struck the Scottish first team and scored a crucial equaliser to salvage a 2-2 for Scotland.
Tennis:
1979: A wild US Open tennis match as John McEnroe defeats Ilie Nastase 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. after Nastase had been defaulted by the Umpire and then reinstated.
1983: Birthday of USA’s Andy Roddick. He appeared in 5 Grand Slam finals, winning only his first – US Open 2003.
1988: Latvian tennis player Ernests Gulbis is born. His best Grand Slam performance came in 2008 when he made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.
Baseball:
1984: Red Sox Jim Rice grounds into record 33rd double play en route to 36
1987: Kirby Puckett goes 6-for-6 with 2 Home Runs in Minnesota Twins’ 10-6 win over Milwaukee
1990: Ken Griffey & Ken Griffey Jr become 1st father & son to play on same team (Seattle Mariners), both single in 1st inning.
