Torch Relay heralding the National Games

Trivandrum, 23 January 2015:

The torch relay heralding the 35th National Games would begin from Kasargod Government College Ground today.

Honorable chief minister Oommen Chandy will hand over the torch to the Arjuna Award winner and volleyball international champion Tom Joseph at a colourful function to be held at the venue at 9.30 AM. Kerala State Minister for Sports Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, Industries and IT minister PK Kunhalikutty, Minster for Agriculture KP Mohanan, and other representatives of people and, various sports personalities will take part in the function.

About 10 lakh people including school and college students, NSS members, NCC cadets, Scout and Guide representatives, representatives from the different defense divisions and police department, would be part of the relay.

The torch would pass through Kannur, Kozhikode, Kottakkal, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Vaikom, Kottayam, Changanassery, Tiruvalla, Chengannur, Mannar, Edathua, Alappuzha, Kollam and Attingal before it reaches Trivandrum on the evening of 29 January. The torch would travel a total distance of 850 km through 7 days before it reaches its destination in Trivandrum.

About 4 sub relays have been organized to make all the districts of Kerala, a part of the main relay. The sub relay that starts from Kalpetta and Malappuram on 24th would join the main relay the same day at Kozhikode and Kottakkal respectively. The sub relay that begins from Palakkad on 25th will join the main relay at Thrissur the same day. The sub relay that starts from Thodupuzha on 27th will join the main relay the same day at Ettumanoor.

Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Chengannur and Kollam are the designated pit stops for the relay. Accordingly the relay would reach these points on 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th respectively.

Representatives of the Kerala Olympic Association (KOA) and representatives from the sports councils across the state will take part in the relay. The relay would be lead by KOA Joint Secretary P Sasidharan Nair and Kerala Sports Additional Director S Najimudin.
