It’s December, and you know what that means. No, we’re not talking about Secret Santa presents, but end of the year stats for social networks. While Facebook and YouTube released their respective end of the year lists of most popular stories and videos on their sites, Twitter has released its “2013 Year on Twitter” website too.

Twitter has undoubtedly been a social networking website where news flies and celebrities expose their private lives on. Be it Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement or be it the Miami Heat defending their NBA title, Twitter was once again the go to place for all the sports fanatics across the globe.

January

The sporting year kick started at the Rod Laver arena in Melbourne, Australia were the first tennis Grand Slam of the season saw Novak Djokovic take home his third consecutive title.

February

The focus then shifted to the US where, with 24.1 million #SB47 Tweets on the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, Beyonce Knowles and the power outage, the roar of the crowd was mighty loud during the Super Bowl.

April

After a quite month of March where the football leagues in Europe hogged the limelight, in April Twitter took us back to the US, this time to Boston, making us aware that no amount of security can save a life on D-day. More than 27 million Tweets were sent as the world discussed the Boston Marathon bombings, the manhunt, and the spirit of #bostonstrong.

May

The summer of 2013 saw one of the greatest brains of football, Sir Alex Ferguson, calling it a day after handing his club its 20th league title. Manchester United tweeted about manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Just an hour later, there were more than 1.4 million Twitter mentions of the news. Though other stories like the all-German Champions League final and IPL also made an attempt to grab the social media attention, nothing could rob the Scottish man of his moment.

June

As children readied themselves for a new academic year, Heat fans, or more so LeBron James fans across the globe saw their favourite become the MVP for a record 4th time and also taking his team beyond the finish line by overcoming a determined San Antonio Spurs side.

July

July saw everyone switch their attention to the green lawns of SW19 where Andy Murray created history by becoming the first British mens player to win the title in the open era.

November

November 2013 will be the saddest day for every cricket fan in India, and the fact was evident on Twitter too as Cricket fans all over the world said #ThankYouSachin to honour the retirement of legendary player Sachin Tendulkar.

December

Even though it is the last month of the calendar year there has been no decline to the amount of enthusiasm and spirit of the fans of various games across the world. December has seen a cluster of big magnitude events. Be it the FIFA World Cup 2014 draws or the Ashes, Twitter once again being the platform for all the sports enthusiasts to express themselves to the world. We hope the coming year also bombard us with more sporting events to keep ourselves busy.
