The Credit One Charleston Open is a professional tennis tournament on the WTA circuit. The competition has been held since 1973, and celebrated 50 years on the professional tour in 2023. In terms of women’s tournaments, the Charleston Open is one of the most popular tournaments around the year. The event is normally held in the month of April, and is played on clay courts.

The 2024 WTA Charleston Open will take place between April 1-7, with the qualifiers being held- two days in advance to the start of the tournament. It is a WTA-500 event, and offers $922,573 as its prize money.

The Charleston Open is played at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina. It is the only clay court event during the course of the season that is played on green clay.

At the 2024 Credit One Charleston Open, Tunisian Ons Jabeur is the defending champion in the women’s singles. Meanwhile, the American pairing of Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk are the women’s doubles reigning winners.

Charleston Open (WTA) History

The WTA Charleston Open has been held every year since 1973. Initially, the tournament was sponsored by the Family Circle magazine; however, it is currently being sponsored by Credit One.

After starting off as a WTA Tier-1 event until 2008, the Charleston Open was converted to a WTA-500 tournament. Up until 2000, the competition was held at Sea Pines Plantation on Hilton Head Island, before moving to Charleston.

American Rosemary Casals was the inaugural winner of the WTA Charleston Open, back in 1973. She defeated fellow countrywoman Nancy Richey in the final. Chris Evert remains the most successful player at the event by far, winning the clay court tournament on eight separate occasions. In 2012, the Charleston Open celebrated 40 years by naming its primary stadium court in Billie Jean King’s name.

Charleston Open (WTA) Venue

The Charleston Open is held at the Credit One Stadium - an arena named after the tournament’s main sponsor. It is located within the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island in Charleston, USA. It is a massive 17-court complex, and is the only venue in the world to host a green clay court WTA tournament. The main stadium has a 10,000+ capacity.

The Credit One Stadium was constructed back in 2001, and saw a major expansion in 2022. The masterminds behind the reconstruction were the Geiger Engineers. While the initial construction cost was around $15 million, the renovation of the stadium added up to $40 million. Interestingly, the renovation was majorly funded by Ben Navarro and his wife Kelly - they are the parents of American tennis starlet Emma Navarro.
