In 1970, Danny Thomas, the founder of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, collaborated with Memphis leaders to establish a charitable association between the hospital and the Memphis Open golf tournament. The tournament was subsequently renamed the St. Jude Classic. In 1986, FedEx took on the role of title sponsor, resulting in the tournament being renamed the World Golf Championships–FedEx St. Jude Invitational in 2019. Subsequently, in 2022, the PGA Tour raised the tournament's significance by including it in the FedEx Cup, a three-tournament playoff used to determine the season's champion, and gave it a new name, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Thanks to this partnership with St Jude, since the year 1970, the golf tournament has managed to raise over $60 million to help and support the hospital's research dealing with life-saving missions & causes.

FedEx St. Jude Championship 2023 History
The tournament, initially known as the Memphis Open, made its debut in May 1958. It was held annually at Colonial Country Club in Memphis until 1971, and later at a new location in Cordova until 1988.
Vernon Bell, a well-known Memphis restaurant owner, played a key role in establishing the tournament and served as its general chairman for a remarkable 22-year period. He was also the father of the late Chris Bell.
The last time the event took place at Colonial Country Club in Cordova was 35 years ago in 1988. Since 1989, it has been hosted at its current venue, TPC Southwind in Memphis.

TPC Southwind is a renowned golf course designed by architect Ron Prichard, with input from PGA TOUR players Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller. It spans 7,244 yards and has a par-70 layout, featuring picturesque zoysia fairways, champion Bermuda greens, and numerous water features like lakes, streams, and ponds. The course's history is preserved with two-grain silos and a windmill, reminders of its past as a dairy farm.
In January 2012, Golf World magazine ranked TPC Southwind as the 23rd-best course on the Exclusive PGA Tour Course Rankings. Throughout its association with the PGA TOUR, the course has earned a reputation for being challenging.
