The PGA Tour and Golf Canada, formerly the Royal Canadian Golf Association, jointly organize the Canadian Open. Aside from World Wars I and II and the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been performed annually since its debut 119 years ago, in 1904.
Among the well-known winners are members of the Hall of Fame: Leo Diegel, Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, Harry Cooper, Lawson Little, Sam Snead, Craig Wood, Byron Nelson, Doug Ford, Bobby Locke, Bob Charles, Arnold Palmer, Kel Nagle, Billy Casper, Gene Littler, Lee Trevino, Curtis Strange, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Vijay Singh, and Mark O'Meara.
Jack Nicklaus, a seven-time runner-up, is regarded as having never won the Canadian Open, and with four in the 1920s, Diegel has the most titles.
When the PGA Tour's schedule was changed in 2007 to accommodate the FedEx Cup, the Canadian Open was moved to late July, sandwiched between three tournaments with even higher profiles (the Open Championship the week prior, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational the week after, and the PGA Championship the week after that).
RBC Canadian Open 2023 History
The Royal Montreal Golf Club was established in 1873 and has been an official golf club ever since. The club hosted the inaugural Canadian Open championship in 1904 and nine additional Canadian Opens at two different venues before relocating to its current location on an island west of Montreal in 1959.
The renowned American golfer Walter Hagen competed in his first professional match at the 1912 Canadian Open at the Rosedale Golf Club. The RBC Canadian Open is the third-oldest event still being played on the PGA Tour. The oldest events are the Open Championship and the U.S. Open.
Tiger Woods (2000) and Lee Trevino (1971) are the only players to have won all three National Open championships in the same season, thus completing golf's Triple Crown. Before the professional tour system took over golf, the event had a unique status as a national open.

RBC Canadian Open 2023 Course
With 30 events so far, Glen Abbey Golf Course has played host to the most Canadian Opens. Jack Nicklaus created Glen Abbey in 1976 for the Royal Canadian Golf Association to act as the championship's official home.
Having hosted the Open ten times, Royal Montreal Golf Club, the site of the first Open in 1904, comes in second. Toronto Golf Club and St. George's Golf & Country Club have each hosted five Opens, while Mississaugua Golf & Country Club and Hamilton Golf & Country Club have each hosted six Opens. Lambton Golf Club, Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club, and Scarboro Golf & Country Club have all hosted four Open Championships.
In Toronto, Ontario, Oakdale Golf and Country Club will host the RBC Canadian Open in 2023. In the 119-year history of the competition, Oakdale will host the national men's open golf championship for Canada, making it just the seventh time since 1977 that Oakdale has done so.
