The Singapore Grand Prix is a Formula One race held at Marina Bay circuit in Singapore. It was the first race to be held under floodlights and the first street circuit in Asia designed for Formula One races. The first race was held in 2008 which was won by Fernando Alonso. The race win was however marred with controversy as it emerged a year later that his teammate Nelson Piquet Jr had been ordered to crash on purpose.
The 2020 Singapore Grand Prix was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The 2021 Singapore Grand Prix will be held on 3 October 2021.
Racing History
The Singapore Grand Prix made its debut as the first night race in 2008. The race featured action, drama, and unpredictability as a mid-race safety car caused by Nelson Piquet Jr’s crash completely changed the dynamics of the race and helped Fernando Alonso win the race.
In 2009, Lewis Hamilton would dominate the weekend to win the race while Fernando Alonso would make his way back to the top of the podium in 2010. Sebastian Vettel would then have a hattrick of wins at this track as he would win the race from 2011 to 2013 while Lewis Hamilton would break the streak in 2014 by winning the race in dominating fashion. 2015 would feature a return to the top for Sebastian Vettel, this time in a Ferrari while Nico Rosberg would sneak in a victory in 2016.
Lewis Hamilton would return to the top of the podium in 2017 and 2018 while Sebastian Vettel would beat his teammate to the line in 2019 with an improbable victory.
The track despite not having too many sections where wheel-to-wheel racing is possible has still some classic races over the years because of added unpredictability due to tire wear or safety cars that are a regular occurrence on this track.
Sebastian Vettel has been the most successful driver here with 5 victories to his name, while Lewis Hamilton has picked up 4 victories himself.
The race in the 2020 season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic but will return to the calendar for the 2021 season.
