NFL Super Bowl - A Brief History

The NFL Super Bowl is the pinnacle event of the National Football League. It is the annual championship game where the winner of the National Football Conference faces the winner of the American Football Conference in a one-off playoff game. The Super Bowl started after the official merger of the American Football League and the National Football League in 1966. Although the teams from each league were merged into a single League after 1970, the first-ever Super Bowl took place in 1967.

The name ‘Super Bowl’ was first coined by Lamar Hunt, the founder of the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of (35-10) in the first-ever Super Bowl game in 1967.

The Super Bowl trophy is named the Vince Lombardi trophy to honor the legendary player and coach. Super Bowls are usually played on a Sunday, popularly known as Super Bowl Sunday. The winners of the Super Bowl are awarded a Super Bowl Championship ring to commemorate their win, and the best player is also honored as the Super Bowl MVP. Historically, the NFC leads the Super Bowl wins over the AFC with 29 wins against 28 wins.

The Super Bowl Experience

The Super Bowl is one of the most important as well as exciting sporting events in the United States, with a majority of the population waiting all season for Super Bowl Sunday. The two teams who make it to a Super Bowl get their names etched in history. Getting to experience the Super Bowl live is deemed one of the best activities ever.

Even before the actual game takes place, the host city has tons of events, parties, and fun things to do for nearly a full week. As both teams make their way to the host city a week before the game, there is a lot of media coverage with player and coach interviews, fan interaction, and much more.

This time the host city Las Vegas, Nevada will be hosting its first-ever Super Bowl. Therefore, the hosting committee will want to make this event extra special for everyone involved in the experience.

Some of the exciting experiences on Super Bowl opening night in Las Vegas will be live entertainment, special appearances and autographs by NFL Legends, and team mascots. Fans will also have opportunities to take photos and get the chance to see Super Bowl players and coaches answering the media questions up and close.

Venues and Host Cities

The venue for Super Bowl 2024 is the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. As one of the iconic sporting events of the year, the city which hosts the Super Bowl holds an important status. Earlier, cities would submit bids to host the event but since Super Bowl 2022, the rules have been changed.

The top priority is the stadium facilities and this is why recently renovated stadiums or new stadiums are chosen as Super Bowl spots. The NFL now unanimously selects a city to host the Super Bowl, and Glendale, Arizona was the first city to be selected through this process for Super Bowl 2023.

The Allegiant Stadium is the newest NFL stadium which cost a whopping $1.9 billion to construct. After breaking ground on November 13, 2017, it was fully functional by July 2020. With a seating capacity of 65,000 that can be expanded to over 71,000, and with all the latest technological advancements that it features, the Allegiant Stadium can host various sporting events such as NFL games, soccer games, rugby games, wrestling events, and other events such as concerts, award ceremonies, etc.

One of its best features is that the stadium has a roll-in natural Bermuda grass field that sits on a tray. After it has been used by the Las Vegas Raiders the field is rolled outside so that it gets exposed to natural light. Below the tray is another artificial turf field directly laid on the stadium's concrete floor and it is used for college football games.

The venues for the next 3 Super Bowls are also officially revealed as per a Tweet by ESPN’s Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter on December 13, 2023.

How do teams make it to the Super Bowl?

So, now that the general idea of the Super Bowl is well established, how do the teams make it to the big game? If you are wondering about the same, don’t worry; we have covered you.

The NFL is divided into two major Conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). Each Conference comprises 16 teams, further divided into four Divisions of four teams. The Super Bowl is a match between the AFC Conference Champion and the NFC Conference Champion.

In the regular season leading up to the playoffs, each team plays a total of 17 games spread over an 18-week schedule. Each team plays the other three teams in its division both at home and away during the season, while the other 11 games that make up their 17-game schedule are rotated yearly between teams from other divisions and conferences.

The four teams at the top of their respective divisions from both conferences after week 18, together with the three teams having the next-best records in each conference (the wild card teams), advance to the postseason (NFL Playoffs) after the conclusion of the regular season.

With each team seeded appropriately based on their win-loss records to establish the schedule for the playoffs, a total of 14 teams - seven from each conference take part in the playoffs which is a knockout system. The road to the Super Bowl comprises three rounds, the Wild Card Round, the Divisional Round, and the Conference Championship Round. The winners of each Conference Championship advance to play in the Super Bowl.
