About Wimbledon 2023

The 136th edition of the Wimbledon Championships will take place from July 3 to July 16, 2023. It will be King Charles III's first public appearance following the passing of the former host, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022.

The Wimbledon Championships, more commonly referred to as Wimbledon, are the oldest and most prestigious tennis competition in the world. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877.

The Australian Open, French Open, and US Open are the other three Grand Slam tennis competitions, along with Wimbledon. The only major still held on grass. It is the only Grand Slam that still enforces a curfew at night, despite the fact that matches can now go until 11 p.m. with lights on.

Wimbledon History

Originally known as "The All England Croquet Club," the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is a private organization that was established on July 23, 1868. Its original location was on Wimbledon's Nursery Road, just off Worple Road.

On July 9, 1877, the first Wimbledon Championship got underway, with the Gentlemen's Singles being the only match played. The tournament, which was to last five days, attracted 22 men who each paid a guinea to participate. William Marshall was defeated by veteran Harrovian rackets player Spencer Gore 6-1, 6-2, and 6-4 in 48 minutes.

The ladies' singles competition was added to the club in 1884, and the men's doubles event was moved over from the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club. In 1913, events for women's and mixed doubles were added.

Due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the All England Club declared in April 2022 that players from Belarus and Russia would not be allowed to participate in the competition. Participation by neutral athletes is also prohibited, unlike the ATP and WTA.

The ATP, ITF, and WTA declared on May 20, 2022, that they would not award ranking points for the competition because they believed the prohibition was unilateral and discriminated against players based on nationality. The All England Club lifted the ban on Russian and Belarusian players on March 31, 2023.

Wimbledon Past Champions

As the four-time defending champion, Novak Djokovic is attempting to match Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon victories as well as their combined record of five straight victories.

In addition, he wants to equal Margaret Court's record of holding the most Grand Slam singles titles of either gender by winning his 24th Grand Slam championship, which would extend the Grand Slam record he established at the 2023 French Open.

Wimbledon 2023 Dates and Venue

Every year, Wimbledon is held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in the neighborhood of Wimbledon in southwest London, England. The match is played on the club's grass courts and is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments.
