FIFA has said that a record nine nations are interested in hosting the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. This represents the largest ever list of football associations to have confirmed their intention to submit a bid for a single tournament in FIFA’s history. Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, a joint Korean bid, New Zealand and South Africa have all officially entered the bidding process.
Potential host nations have until 4th October to submit their bids for hosting the tournament. FIFA will implement a fair and transparent bidding process. Unlike in the men’s tournament bidding process, where the full FIFA membership casts a vote, the FIFA Council will vote to award the Women’s World Cup. However, FIFA has now reversed its position and agreed to publicize its vote on the 2023 Women’s World Cup host. The 37 member FIFA Council will pick the host in March next year.
While the joint Korean bid may raise eyebrows, FIFA head Gianni infantino has encouraged the bid and they seem to be the favourites to host the FIFA Womens World Cup 2023 in spite of the two neighbours strong political differences and conflicts. The joint bid is the latest combined initiative by the two Korean nations to displays their sporting unity.
The countries otherwise have been at war since 1950. Athletes from North and South Korea marched under a unified flag at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics, and in ice hockey the women competed as a unified team.
In May 2018, North and South Korea were due to play each other in the quarterfinals of table tennis world championships, but instead they came together as a team to compete against Japan in the semifinal. The two countries are planning to compete as a unified team at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and are bidding to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games together.
