Exclusive: Dirty Heads' Duddy B on if there's a "secret reggae society of golf" & more

Dirty Heads has been redefining the sound of Southern California since 2003. With over 700 million streams to date, the group has been inhaling alternative, hip-hop, reggae and rock and exhaling one irresistible, infectious anthem after another.

Its discography includes six studio albums and eight Top 20 hits, including the RIAA gold-certified smash “Lay Me Down."

Following its spring tour with The Hip Reduction, 311 and Dirty Heads will join forces to bring their hybrid alternative sound and good vibes to amphitheaters nationwide this summer for The Sounds Of Summer Tour.

Special guests The Interrupters will join on select dates of the Live Nation-produced tour, which kicks off on July 2nd. Dreamers and Bikini Trill will also join the tour as support.

On May 1st -- the day in which the aforementioned Live Nation launched National Concert Week, giving fans the chance to buy $20 tickets for thousands of concerts including select 311 and Dirty Heads shows -- I spoke with the Dirty Heads' Duddy B by phone.

Away from the band, what do you like to do for fun? Are you a sports guy by any chance?

Duddy B: I am a big sports guy. I play golf a lot in my free time. I've got a young son who is playing sports right now and my daughter's doing a lot of that same stuff. So I'm busy with that all the time.

You yourself as a golfer, when did you first get into that?

Duddy B: I didn't get into it till later when I was 25, 26 years old. I played baseball and basketball all through high school and things like that. As I got older I started getting into golf and I'm still in love with it now. Pretty much the only sport I'm playing these days is golf.

Are any of your bandmates also into golf?

Duddy B: They are not, unfortunately.

And any idea if any of the 311 guys are into golf?

Duddy B: I think so. I'm not positive but I think a couple of them are. So hopefully we'll get out a couple of times in summer.

The reason I'm asking about that is because a lot of metal bands are surprisingly into golf and you would never suspect that. The former guitarist of Judas Priest [K.K. Downing] had a chapter in his book about golfing with Alice Cooper and members of Def Leppard. So I was wondering if there was like a "secret reggae society of golf."

Duddy B: There actually really is. I golf all the time with the drummer for Pepper. I golf with a couple of the guys from Iraton, The Green... Every band in this scene, at least one of the guys in the band is a heavy golfer. Slighty Stoopid, I went golfing with Miles [Doughty] a couple of times. So there really is this little golf scene in the reggae community, for sure. (laughs)
