High-pressure gusts prevailed over the first round of the Open Championship 2024 on Thursday, July 18. The speed of gusts ranged between 21 mph to 25 mph at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. 156 players are competing for the Claret Jug at the 152nd Open this year.

The top 70 players or players tied at 70th place make the cut at the Open Championship. In the last ten years, the cutline has ranged mostly from 144 to 146 shots with few exceptions. The cutline for the last 10 years is as follows:

  • 2023: 146 (+3), Royal Liverpool
  • 2022: 144 (E), St. Andrews
  • 2021: 141 (+1), Royal St. George's
  • 2019: 143 (+1), Royal Portrush
  • 2018: 145 (+3), Carnoustie
  • 2017: 145 (+5), Royal Birkdale
  • 2016: 146 (+4), Royal Troon
  • 2015: 144 (E), St. Andrews
  • 2014: 146 (+2), Royal Liverpool
  • 2013: 150 (+8), Muirfield

At the time of writing, the projected cutline is +3 and several notable golfers might miss the cut of the final Major of the year. They need a serious turnaround in the second round to play on the weekend.

6 golfers who might miss the cut at the Open Championship 2024

#1 Tiger Woods

Not many would be surprised by Tiger Woods' inclusion on the list. Woods carded 8-over 79 in the first round. At the time of writing, he was 10-over 113 in 26 holes with eight to go.

Woods would be missing the third consecutive cut at Major. He earlier missed the cuts at the US Open 2024 and the PGA Championship 2024.

#2 Bryson DeChambeau

The 2024 US Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau had a dismal first round where he scored 5-over 76. This is his worst Major performance this year.

He finished T6 at the Augusta National Golf Club and then finished as a runner-up at the PGA Championship at Valhalla. DeChambeau emerged as the winner at Pinehurst No.2 last month by one shot over Rory Mcllroy. He was 7th on the PGA Tour's power rankings for the Open Championship.

#3 Rory Mcllroy

The World No. 2's Major curse continues as Mcllroy has failed to win a Major after the 2014 PGA Championship win. Last month, he came close to winning the US Open but missed two putts under three feet in the last three holes.

Mcllroy had a rough start at the Open Championship with 7-over 78 and needs to pull up his socks to make the cut at the tournament.

#4 Sahith Theegala

Sahith Theegala came to the Open Championship after a T4 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open. He was placed sixth on the PGA Tour power rankings for the tournament.

However, he scored 6-over 77 in the 18 holes and might not make the cut.

#5 Cameron Smith

The 2022 Open Champion Cameron Smith carded 9-over 80 in the first round of the 152nd Open. The LIV Golfer has already scored three more bogeys in the first six holes of the tournament and is poised to miss the cut.

#6 Wyndham Clark

The World No. 5 has had a decent 2024 season. However, he has failed to make a mark after winning the 2023 US Open. He finished T33 at the Open Championship last year and missed two consecutive cuts at Majors in the Masters tournament and the PGA Championship.

Wyndham Clark was also a non-factor at the Pinehurst No.2 this year. He carded 7-over 78 in the first round and was 10-over 116 in 27 holes at the time of writing.
