Tiger Woods declared himself "very pleased" after ending the Honda Classic at level par courtesy of a final-round 70 at PGA National's Champion course.

In his third start of 2018 following a succession of lengthy injury lay-offs, Woods improved significantly on the missed cut he registered at last week's Genesis Open.

The 14-time major winner struck the ball superbly for the majority of the week and got to within four of the lead on Sunday before suffering more misery at holes 15 to 17, known as the 'Bear Trap'.

A second double-bogey of the week on the par-three 15th, where he found water, ended Woods' faint hopes of posting a potential winning total and he dropped a further shot on 16 before finishing with successive pars.

Nevertheless, Woods - who topped the proximity-to-the-hole rankings at the end of his round - was able to reflect positively on his week's work.

He told CBS Sports' Dottie Pepper: "I thought I played well this week, I really did. I thought I had control of it.

"I didn't play the last few holes well, the last couple of days. But overall, I'm very pleased with the progress I've made and I gave myself a chance [of winning the tournament].

"I was three under par and had four holes to go. If I'd have gotten probably two or three more [birdies] coming in, I could have posted [a score] early."

Woods appears to be gaining in confidence as the Masters draws near.

Asked what lies ahead for him between now and the first major of the year at Augusta in April, the former world number one replied: "I think that I need to go back in the gym again and start training. The body feels good. I just need to keep it feeling good.

"I'll get back to the gym and keep it strong. I felt like I made a big leap this week. I really hit it well."
