Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri is placed third at the ongoing Wells Fargo Championship, after a brilliant display in the opening round that saw him finish one stroke behind joint leaders Steve Wheatcroft and Andrew Loupe.
In his first appearance at the Quail Hollow Club on Thursday, he landed six birdies, three on each side of the course, and not a single bogey en route to his final tally of six-under 66.

On a tricky day that saw the likes of defending champion Rory Mcllroy slip way below on the standings, the 28-year-old Indian held fine shape throughout the prevailing wet and windy conditions. Notably impressive was his execution to birdie the 16th hole downwind and par the 17th and 18th to successfully see out an intricate stretch of the final three holes.
Currently ranked 55th in the world, an upbeat Lahiri will be looking to maintain his positive run of form going into the ensuing rounds of the tournament, if he is to achieve the 2nd Top-10 finish of his PGA career here, at the Quail Hollow.
Hailing from a nation reeling under an overwhelming fixation with cricket, Anirban’s stirring show at the golf course is certain to turn some heads and contribute in the upliftment of the sport that currently exists as a mere fringe entity in India.
