The New York Giants have confirmed Dave Gettleman's appointment as their new general manager.

Along with head coach Ben McAdoo, former GM Jerry Reese was fired earlier this month after the Giants fell to 2-10 on the season.

Steve Spagnuolo took up the coaching reins until the end of the year and has overseen three straight losses but Gettleman - only the Giants' fourth GM since 1979 - is now in place to help president John Mara with the search for McAdoo's permanent successor.

"Given where we are as a team, we thought it was important to bring in someone with experience as a general manager and a proven track record," said Mara and chairman Steve Tisch in a Giants release.

"Dave's experience is unparalleled. He did an outstanding job as general manager in Carolina, and he was vital to our success during his tenure here.

"Dave is going to bring his own approach to our organisation in how we draft and acquire players through free agency."

Gettleman spent 15 years as a front office executive with the Giants, a period which included the Super Bowl wins in 2007 and 2011.

He subsequently enjoyed four years as GM of the Carolina Panthers, including a trip to Super Bowl 50, where they lost to the Denver Broncos.
