The Philadelphia Eagles will give a Super Bowl ring to former long snapper Jon Dorenbos, who was forced to retire this season due to a heart defect.

Dorenbos spent more than 10 seasons with the Eagles before he was traded to the New Orleans Saints in August. That move may have ended up saving his life, as doctors discovered during a physical that he had an aortic aneurysm.

The 37-year-old had to cut his football career short and undergo open-heart surgery, but the Eagles still honoured him in a huge way. Team owner Jeffrey Lurie invited him to Minneapolis to watch them take on the Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

"Had I played, I'd die. If you can't play in it, this is the next best way to enjoy it," Dorenbos told the New Orleans Advocate. "Mr. Lurie called me and said he wants me to be a part of it, said I was here a long time and he said, 'We're going to win this, and you're going to get a ring.'"

After the Eagles won 41-33, Dorenbos was asked if he had any regrets of being traded right before Philadelphia's historic season, which saw the team win its first Super Bowl title.

"My fate was what it was," Dorenbos said. "I'm just happy to be around guys I played with for so long."
