Karnataka beat Bhopal in girls' national hockey championship

Mysore, March 19 (IANS): Karnataka tasted their first win as they defeated Bhopal 4-1 in Pool B of the Girls National Hockey Championship (Division A) at the Chamundi Vihar Hockey Ground here Wednesday.

It was Karnataka’s Ramya N. who stroked in the first goal just a minute before the end of the first half, helping them to take a 1-0 lead at half-time.

The second half saw Karnataka go on an attacking spree and pierce in three goals in just eight minutes via Sushma C.G. (43rd minute), captain Sandhya H.P. (47th) and Niha (50th). Bhopal’s Puja Yadav scored a consolation in the 56th minute.

In Pool D, Odisha registered their second win in a row, defeating defeated Punjab 3-0. Odisha took control when captain Ambika Toppo (9th) converted a penalty corner. Ashmita Barla followed (33rd) with another penalty corner. Sarojini Ekka (54th) scored the last one to put the game beyond Punjab’s reach.

In another Pool B match, Madhya Pradesh overcame Delhi 5-0 to register their second consecutive win. Madhya Pradesh’s Rakhi Prajapati scored two (8th, 25th) by halftime. Madhya Pradesh pounced in with three more through Anuja Singh (54th, 66th) and Preeti Dubey (61st).

Later in Pool D, Mumbai crushed Bihar with a 7-0 victory. In the first half, Mumbai dominated with a 2-0 lead but went all out in the second half to slice in five more.
