Manipur, Chhattisgarh girls enter national hockey semis

Mysore, March 7 (IANS): Manipur joined Chhattisgarh in the semi-finals of the fourth Hockey India (HI) Junior Women’s National Championship (Division B) at the Chamundi Vihar Hockey Ground here Friday.

Manipur and Chhattisgarh booked their last four berths from Pool A and C respectively.

In their last league match of Pool A, Manipur registered their third win in a row to defeat Vidarbha 6-0. Manipur took a 2-0 lead in the first half through Sonia Devi (17th minute) and captain Gitarani Devi (22nd).

The second half saw the Manipur girls going all out and closing the game with a resounding 6-0 victory. Bidyarani Devi scored two goals (39th, 47th) and Sonia Devi took her goal tally to three by scoring two more goals (49th, 60th).

In another Pool A match, Uttarakhand recorded a big 18-0 win over Tripura. Mamta Bhatt and Pooja Bhatt scored five goals each while Surbhi Tiwari and Maya Bisht pocketed four each.

Within the first 13 minutes, Uttarakhand had banked five in their kitty with Mamta opening the account in the 3rd minute and scoring again in the 13th, followed by Surbhi (fifth, 10th) and Pooja (ninth).

Tripura’s effort failed to leave any impact. The first half saw Uttarakhand with a 10-goal lead before finally taking Tripura down by 18-0.

Results:

Pool A: Uttarakhand 18 beat Tripura 0; Manipur 6 beat Vidarbha 0.
