ENG vs WI Match Result
- Cricket World Cup 2019 Match 19
212/10 (44.4 ov)
213/2 (33.1 ov)
England won by 8 wickets
Player of the match:
That's it from this game then! Hope you enjoyed our live coverage. Tomorrow is a doubleheader as Sri Lanka play Australia while South Africa face Afghanistan. Do join in for those games as well. Until then, it's goodbye from us!
Joe Root is the Man of the Match
for his 16th ODI ton and the two wickets he took in the first innings.
But it was all set up by the England bowlers who were aided by some really poor and strange shot selection. Their famed power-hitting batting line-up came up short against the pace of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood both of whom picked up three wickets each. In fact, Joe Root came in as the seventh bowler and took a couple of wickets with his part-time off-spin. Hence, Windies have their batting to blame as they've failed to stand up in this tournament so far.
212 was never going to be enough and West Indies hardly posed a challenge. Roy and Morgan were under an injury cloud and were in doubt to bat. However, they were not even required. Bairstow and Root got off to a solid start. The former failed to convert his start as he holed out at third-man for 45. Woakes walked in at No. 3 and batted well. Meanwhile, Root continued to bat elegantly and eventually, scored his second ton of the tournament. The West Indian pacers looked toothless and just kept banging the ball in short and got very little rewards. They stuck to the short-ball theory and the England batsmen feasted on it. They eventually got to the target in 33.1 overs.
Full and Stokes drills it past mid-on and
England have won with 101 deliveries to spare
33.1 FREE HIT. FOUR! Jason Holder to Ben Stokes. Half volley, middle stump backing away flick, past long on for 4 runs.
Oh, it's a no-ball and Stokes has smashed it for four. Free-hit coming up which may well be the last ball of the game.
33.1 FOUR! Jason Holder to Ben Stokes. Short, outside off stump on the back foot driving, well timed to deep extra cover for 1 run.
Just 9 needed now. England will look to end this in a jiffy.
