Player of the match:
Ikram Ali Khil
Right then! That's all from us here at Sportskeeda!
The Indians finally got the job done, albeit after having to endure an almighty scare. Not their best performance overall, but one that you feel will help them greatly in the long run. After all, that is what champions do. They win when their backs are against the wall and when they aren't playing well.
Do join us for the game tomorrow between Pakistan and South Africa! Till then, it's goodbye!
"It is right up there. We have been playing some really good cricket and we expected to put up a good score on the board. 250-260 was par but Afghanistan didn't let us play the way we wanted. We had a collective belief that we could win this one at the half-way stage. When I went in to bat, I understood the pace of the wicket and knew cross-batted shots wouldn't work. Playing with a straight bat was the norm and we could have been better with our shot selection. They put a lot of pressure on us in the middle overs. We want to use Bumrah smartly because he is a bowler who can inflict damage at any stage of the innings. Keeping Chahal back for an over also worked. All in all, our bowling worked well. Shami was really, really good today and he was making the ball do a lot. Vijay has been doing well, he has shown intent in the field. The game was very important. Things did not go well for us but we showed character to get a positive result."
Here is what the captains have to say!
"We played really well in the first innings and bowled really well. India have a strong batting line up and we kept them to a good score. Spinner bowled really well and Rashid came back well today. Mujeeb also bowled well. Aftab and myself bowled well at the end. The total was not that much and we probably did not get a big innings from our batsman today. A score of 80 or 90 or 100 would have been great. Our performance was a positive and we are learning. I am happy with the team. "
Jasprit Bumrah is the Player of the Match!
"If the captain has such trust in you, it gives you a lot of confidence. The wicket was getting slower and slower so it was necessary to bowl stump to stump with the older ball. There was a bit of reverse swing also so I backed my yorkers. We wanted to create pressure, take the run rate high and then take our chances. When everybody is chipping in with wickets, it is a very good sign for our team."
Wow! What a victory for India!
India have genuinely gotten out of jail today. They were under the pump for the majority of the game and the Afghans would consider themselves unlucky to not come away with the two points. To put things into perspective, Afghanistan won the cumulative phases whereas India were the better side in the key moments.
After all, it is the ability to stay calm in the clutch situations that takes you places and the Men In Blue march on to 9 points from 5 games.
Shami finishes it off in style!
Shami becomes only the second Indian to take a hat-trick in a World Cup game as he castles Mujeeb with an inch-perfect yorker. The ball tailed in a touch and thudded into the stumps. Boy! Hasn't Shami stepped up in Bhuvneshwar's absence.
49.5 OUT! Bowled. Mohammed Shami to Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Yorker, to leg backing away driving, missed to.
Two in two for Shami!
Shami cleans up Aftab Alam with a full and straight delivery. The batsman went for the glory shot over cow corner but to be fair to him, he didn't really have another option. He missed the ball by miles and it crashed into the stumps. Shami on a hat trick.
49.4 OUT! Bowled. Mohammed Shami to Aftab Alam. Length ball, off stump backing away Slog, missed to.
Nabi bites the dust!
Shami goes for the yorker again and falls short. The ball ends up in the slot but Nabi can't time it to clear the fence. Pandya comes around from long on and completes the catch. The final nail in the Afghan coffin?
49.3 OUT! Caught. Mohammed Shami to Mohammad Nabi. Half volley, down leg side backing away driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to long on, by Pandya.
Now he denies a single. That's the right strategy here. Nabi is the one to get the Afghans home.
49.2 Mohammed Shami to Mohammad Nabi. Half volley, middle stump on the back foot Slog, to deep mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Kohli.
49.1 FOUR! Mohammed Shami to Mohammad Nabi. Full toss, to leg on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control past long on for 4 runs. Clears the front leg and thumps it down the ground. Gets to fifty but more crucially picks up four.
Four off the first ball of the over!
Shami looks for the yorker but it ends up as a low full toss. Nabi muscles it past long on for a four. He also completes his fifty in the process.
Nabi takes a single off the final delivery and he has left 16 for the 50th over. Geez, he's left it late here.
AFG: 209/7(RR 4.27)

48.6 Jasprit Bumrah to Mohammad Nabi. Yorker, off stump on the back foot working, to square leg for 1 run, fielded by Yadav.
48.5 Jasprit Bumrah to Ikram Ali Khil. Full toss, to leg backing away pushing, to deep cover for 1 run, fielded by Shankar.
48.4 Jasprit Bumrah to Ikram Ali Khil. Full toss, down leg side backing away Slog, mis-timed to short mid wicket for no runs, fielded by Sharma.
48.3 Jasprit Bumrah to Mohammad Nabi. Full toss, middle stump on the back foot working, to long on for 1 run, fielded by Pandya.
With 19 required off 10 balls, something has to give in the next couple of deliveries. Either the batsman will release the pressure with a boundary or Bumrah might seal the game with a wicket.
Let's see what the game has in store for us!
48.2 Jasprit Bumrah to Mohammad Nabi. Full toss, down leg side down the track driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep extra cover for 2 runs, fielded by Rahul.
48.1 Jasprit Bumrah to Mohammad Nabi. Yorker, outside off stump on the back foot Steer, to point for no runs, fielded by Pandya.
Only three runs off the 48th over then. Shami bowled a top over and that was very important, considering Bumrah had been taken for 8 runs in the 47th over.
