Commentary

Well, what a game to kick off the World Cup. This edition promises to be an exciting one and it will be excellent for the health of the tournament if we see more games like these. Stefanie Taylor (WI captain): The way we played today set up the contest for us. We discussed to score in excess of 200 and we did it out in the middle. New Zealand is a good team when it comes to chasing but we can't think about them too much. We put on a fight and it was kind of tricky for us to decide as to who was going to bowl the last over for us until we decided to hand the ball to Dottin who did an excellent job for us. The bowlers were excellent, they were brilliant.

Sophie Devine (NZ captain): Credit to West Indies. They played really well out in the middle, especially Matthews. We were in the game till the last over but couldn't go all the way. We will take positives from this match and carry them on in the next game vs Bangladesh. Being the host nation, we need to embrace the pressure. We need to dust off what happened and move on. Bangladesh are an exciting team and carry contagious energy whenever they step out on the field to play

Hayley Matthews has been adjudged the Player of the match for her splendid all-round performance, hundred and a couple of scalps!

Hayley Matthews: That's the kind of character we just showed now, I think against a team like New Zealand at home, for us to be able to come out there, crowd at the back of the hosts and put up that kind of a performance was phenomenal. Couple of the girls are saying that I should be injured for the next game(chuckles)(talking about her hamstring). For sure, it's obviously the World Cup, come out here and put up a performance like and help the team win means a lot to me. We were looking to get off to a good start and we've done that and hopefully can carry on the momentum throughout!

West Indies win the match by 3 runs

Wake up, men and women in the Caribbean. The West Indies women's team has pulled victory from the jaws of defeat. New Zealand has failed to get past the finish line and they bury their faces in their palms. Absolute scenes here at Tauranga.

So, how did the chase unfold? New Zealand lost the early wicket of Suzie Bates owing to a freakish run out as she tried to back up at the non-striker's end. Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine batted along for a while before Kerr was undone by some excellent bowling from Hayley Matthews. Amy Satterthwaite walked out to the middle and joined forces with Devine and the duo put on a 50 run partnership before it was broken by Anisa Mohammed.

Devine then carried on the scoring job. She fell short of partners at the other end but kept scoring runs in bulk. She had luck favouring her as she was dropped earlier on 37 and then later on 80. She made her way to the 3 figure mark but was unlucky to carry from thereon.

Unlucky was that dismissal for the White Ferns too. Post Devine's wicket, NZ slipped horribly. They were 215/7 with Katey Martin and Jess Kerr contributing with the bat in hand but then last three wickets within the blink of an eye and conceded victory to the women from the West Indies. The Australian women's team must be breathing a sigh of relief as their record of the highest chase at a Women's World Cup (258 vs SL in 2017) stays intact.

It was an excellent bowling effort from the Windies. Defending a total of 260 versus White Ferns at their home turf was never going to be easy, but they did it and that process registered their first win on Kiwi soil. Chinelle Henry and Shakera Salman picked up a wicket each and aiding them were Anisa Mohammed and Hayley Matthews, who picked 2 wickets. The one who stole the thunder was Deandra Dottin, who bowled in a WODI after 2 years and picked up 2 wickets to seal the deal for her side. Let's now go down to the presentation and hear what the Player of the Match and the captains have to say.

49.5 Deandra Dottin to Fran Jonas, OH! RUN-OUT! West Indies win, they are ecstatic, New Zealand got it wrong at the end, agony for White Ferns. Back of a length on the fourth stump line, nips back in a bit, Jonas on the backfoot swings hard but misses, Jonas wanted the bye but was sent back, keeper passes it back to Dottin who collects and whips the bails off. What a thriller of a game this turned out to be, outstanding from both the teams!

49.4 Deandra Dottin to Jess Kerr, OUT! IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! Deandra Dottin is turning it on for West Indies, Kerr can't clear the fielder at mid-off, Henry runs back and pouches a sensational catch. Back of a length on the off-stump, Kerr backs away and smashes it, goes straight to the fielder's throat and White Ferns have just one wicket to do this!

49.2 Deandra Dottin to Katey Martin, OUT! HUGE SHOUT FOR LBW AND GIVEN! Martin reviews it! Low full toss, tails into Martin on the middle and leg, stays back to whip it but misses, raps low on the pad, looks to be a goner there but will be interesting to see if there was any inside edge.

UltraEdge confirms no bat involved. Ball tracking has THREE REDS, crashing into the leg-stump! Dottin gets the breakthrough!
