Commentary

What a game we've witnessed today. We certainly did not see that result coming. Rajasthan Royals, fighting to stay alive in the tournament pull of a massive upset with some ease as they brushed aside CSK. As a result, the mid-table is jam-packed and the hunt for the fourth spot is well and truly on. Four sides on 10 points now, with just one playoff spot. RCB play PBKS tomorrow and have a chance to confirm their spot before being dragged into a mid-table battle, while a defeat for PBKS will need a win to stay alive in the tournament. That's going to be the theme for the tournament in the coming days. All but SRH are in the thick of things. That's all for now though. Join us tomorrow, for the Super Sunday double-header. Ruturaj Gaikwad (Player of the Match): It was a slow wicket at the start, slightly damp but as the game progressed it got better. It was important for one of the batters to stay till the 14th-15th over. I'm working on timing the ball really well and trying to maintain my shape. Right from when I started, have come across many coaches, so I'm maintaining that. Right from when I started playing cricket, everyone's told me I have the gift of timing, just been relying on that, thankfully it's coming off. I think I would say my selection in CSK in 2019 when I didn't get a chance to play, but just being in the dressing room, I got to learn a lot even though there were other coaches. Got to know routines, hard work needed, work to put in. That was a good learning curve, that helped me a lot. Started off really slow, didn't dream of a 100, the aim was to make sure we get to 160-170. Like the Orange Cap but I would've loved to be on the winning side, maybe next time.

Sanju Samson: We are aware of the abilities and the youngster we have in our batting lineup. So that's why it gets very disappointing to lose matches like that. We have the talent to get over the line. The discussion was that the wicket was getting better. In the last 3-4 overs, it was behaving really well. So, we definitely knew that it would be much better in the second innings. I'm happy I guessed the conditions right. That's the kind of starts our openers have been giving us in the second leg. They have given us good starts but we haven't been able to convert on it, but today, they almost finished the game off in the powerplay. They were going for the kill and I'm very happy for Jaiswal. We are very sure that he is someone who will go a long way. We have been discussing about Dube in the last 2-3 games. Mahipal did a really good job in the first game, hitting 40 in 15 odd, we wanted to back him but today we felt like it was Shivam's day. He has been waiting for a long time, and was working hard in the nets. Very happy for him today. Unbelievable batting by Gaikwad. We are really afraid of a batter like him. Playing a lot of cricketing shots with not much of a risk. We need to be respecting those kind of batsmen and I'm very happy for him getting his hundred. To be honest, we are not thinking too far ahead. Off day tomorrow, and then we play again in Sharjah. So, we are taking it one match at a time.

MS Dhoni: It was a bad toss to lose. The Rajasthan batters batted well. The dew took effect in the second innings. The ball started coming on really well. But they still needed to bat well. They came out and put pressure on the bowlers. Chasing such a target, then take the game away in the first 6 overs. (On the target put up) 250 could have been close to that (par total). There were still 17 balls left in the innings. We tried to drag the game. That's the most I could have done. Initially, the ball was stopping a bit. Then it started coming on well, in the last 4-5 overs. That's when Rutu capitalized. It was outstanding to bat the full 20 overs, to get a century. It's easy to brush it under the carpet when you have lost the match, but he batted really well. 190 was a good total to get on that track. (On the opening batters) The batsmen need to assess the total. Often you tend to go too hard and realise later that it is not a 160 or 180 wicket. You start playing big shots, then get out and extra pressure on middle-order. The openers have assessed what is a good score well. (On Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo) Well, they are not here, so obviously miss them. The wicket changed very quickly. Their batsmen put pressure on the bowlers and it paid off. The bowlers were under the pump. We could have used the dimensions better. We could have kept the fielders and asked the batsmen to go over them. You go through a few games every season that you want to forget. But you still need to do learn. The same thing can happen in knockout matches too. Then there is no meaning in thinking that we could have learned from the Rajasthan game. That's what we have done well.

Shivam Dube: We had a good start and for me it was all about batting with a good strike rate. The positive intent I had helped. Sanga told me to back myself and play to my potential. He told me that I can win matches, so I did that today, I thank him for that. I have some power naturally and I practice a lot for the big sixes. Playing at this level, you can't just hit it hard, you need to time it as well. Working on that and trying to be more successful in the future. It's a good surface to bat on. Usually, its a high scoring track. As Mahi bhai said, in the first innings it was a tad sticky but in the second innings we could chase it down as the wicket got better. We are definitely getting some confidence from this game. Finishing this game at this stage and coming into the crunch stage of the tournament, we are in a good spot right now.

Right then. What a game we've witnessed tonight. A batter's paradise for once and didn't they make the most of it? It was Ruturaj Gaikwad in the first innings with his sublime century, while Jadeja's cameo had some extravagant shots of their own. 190 certainly seemed like a par target but the Rajasthan Royals were off the blocks way in a flash. Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal got their side off to a blitzing start, with the latter notching up a quickfire half-century.

The platform was pretty much laid from then on. Sanju Samson ensured there's some calm in the middle of the proceedings, while Shivam Dube took centerstage and hammered a 64 to lead his side over the line. The CSK bowlers were taken to the clears, most notably, Hazlewood and Curran. Thakur was their best bowler, while the spinners got the treatment as well.

Did not see that coming, did we? Rajasthan Royals stay alive in this tournament with a clinical seven-wicket victory. They will still need to win their remaining two games, but for the moment, the margin of victory tonight takes them ahead of Mumbai to the sixth spot. As for CSK, they are still comfortable in the hunt for the top two spots. Plenty of absentees for them, so there won't be any panic buttons. Certainly not when the great man is in charge. However, Raina's struggle will be a cause of concern. Plenty of match-winning performances tonight. Stay tuned for the presentations.
