Analysis

Commentary

So, now it's a battle between the remaining three sides for the final playoff spot. The UP Warriorz are in pole position to seal that spot, but the other two sides will be breathing down their neck to make it a tantalizing battle. We were treated to an absolute show in this contest, courtesy of Sophie Devine. The veteran has been doing this for a long time now and serves as a little reminder that we should relish her while she's still playing. Phew! That was a scintillating end to the double-header day in the WPL. After the UP Warriorz broke Mumbai Indians' winning streak in the tournament, the Royal Challengers Bangalore have managed to extend their winning streak to two games in a row. As a result, the Delhi Capitals are the latest side to confirm their qualification in the playoffs.

No guesses for who the Player of the Match is. Let's hear what Sophie Devine has to say. She also gets the Orange Cap: (Winning the Orange Cap) That's always nice, to beat Meg (Lanning) at something. I was in the zone tonight. Milestones don't affect me too much. I was going to go on about it in the same way I scored the 98 runs, not looking for a tap and run. Glad that I could contribute to my team. (Factors for this innings) Probably getting used to the conditions here and looking back at others. It's important for me to continue to learn and grow, even if I'm older. Ash and Laura were brilliant tonight and I was just trying to pick things from their innings. It's a great opportunity. I have to give credit to the bowlers who did the hard work early in the tournament when there were tricky conditions to bowl in. It's nice to be able to contribute with bat and ball, it's something that helps me as well. Very happy to get the win tonight. (Favourite shot, the 94-meter six that landed around the bar) I think that's probably a sign of things to come later in the tournament.

Smriti Mandhana (Royal Challengers Bangalore captain): We took a lot of confidence from the first win. We bowled really well in the first innings to restrict them in the middle and watching Sophie from the other end was fun. We thought we were 15-20 above the par score but when we went in to bat, it seemed like a good surface. When we went to bat, I thought we did well to restrict them to under 200. My thoughts were I just need some popcorn to enjoy the show. My job was easy from the other end, and a few of those sixes were massive. We're more clear about how we want to go about as a bowling and a batting unit. The girls are still very positive, regardless of what might happen. That's a major positive for us. Pleased with the wins. We know we're a good team. The way we started, we had a few doubts about what is happening. With the two wins now, we surely have more belief in ourselves and the team.

Ellyse Perry: I would like to talk just about Soph, that will be great (Laughs). Firstly and selfishly, great to be on the same side. She is a very special player and very few players are capable of that. She has been very consistent over the years and guess the fans can appreciate her ability. That last shot which got her out reflected how she is a team player. Soph is exactly the same whether she scores a 100 or 0. She is a typical Kiwi, just tries to have fun. It has taken a while for us to find our feet in the competition. Great for Smriti to have sometime in the middle. She was practicing back-foot cover drives played that first ball in the game. I don't think I have ever seen someone hit the ball like Soph does. Hope so, the Taj have been amazing. I would really like to see a lot of face in Soph's face.

Sneh Rana (Gujarat Giants captain): It was a good total on the board but we couldn't perform with the ball. It was a good total to defend on this pitch but we were not upto the mark with the ball, that cost us. We thought of continuing with the momentum and that's why sent Meghana since she is an explosive batter. We will definitely comeback stronger.

Commanding. Comprehensive. Complete. It was a clinical run chase from the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the end and most of it is down to one batter, who put on an absolute show at the CCI tonight. Words probably won't do justice to it, so make you go catch highlights of the show Sophie Devine put on. The veteran from New Zealand blazed her way to a 36-ball 99, agonizingly missing out on a well-deserved half-century.

Striking at a rate of close to 300, Devine smashed 9 fours and 8 sixes to completely tear apart this Gujarat Giants bowling unit. Ash Gardner bore the brunt of her first, being smashed for 24 runs in her first over to set the tone. Tanuja Kanwar didn't get escape punishment either, while the others just about managed to cling on to escape from the firing line.

Sneh Rana wanted to play on the off-spinner's match-up against Mandhana and got the better of her opposite number. Devine also eventually fell short of her landmark, being dismissed on 99 as she tried to muscle her way to the landmark. Unfortunately, that means we still have to wait for the first century of the tournament, but the Royal Challengers Bangalore stay alive in this competition, just about.
