Player of the match:
Faf du Plessis
That's it for tonight's coverage of the South Africa vs Sri Lanka match by Sportskeeda
. Both teams are officially out of the #CWC19 contest.
We'll see you all again tomorrow in the big clash between New Zealand and Australia, the two finalists of the 2015 World Cup. The Aussies have already sailed through to the semis. New Zealand, on the other hand, lost to Pakistan and have two games ahead of them. They need to win at least one to seal a semifinal spot.
Here comes the
winning captain Faf Du Plessis
"Long time coming, yeah. It was a good game and we did ourself justice in all three departments. We've been trying to get Pretorius in but the combinations weren't working, so today he came in place of Lungi. We didn't really start well. The nature of the wicket told me that we needed to bowl straight lines, a consistent top-of-off lines. It feels bitter-sweet, it doesn't feel like it means much. It's a little too late. We've batted well all through the tournament, but we just didn't have guys batting through. Hashim gave us a good foundation, I batted well. I think Bangladesh was the one that took the wind out of us. England are a good time and they were too good for us. But Bangladesh gave us a sucker punch and because we had a game immediately after that we couldn't recover."
Dimuth Karunaratne(SL captain):
I think all departments went wrong. In the batting, Kusal and Avishka batted really well, but we just weren't able to rotate the strike. Unfortunately, we had only 200 on the board and the wicket was getting better and better after which they batted really well. I felt the wicket was really slow, they bowled really well and their fielders in the ring kept the pressure on. They planned really well. We couldn't get the singles and kept looking for big shots. Malinga started really well, but we couldn't build any pressure from the other end. We have to learn how to build pressure on the batsmen from these kind of tournaments. We have two matches and we have to beat West Indies and India in both matches. They are tough teams and we have to try and do well in those matches.
Dwaine Pretorius is the Man of the Match:
"I'm just happy we got over the line today and I'm glad I could play a part in that I try and work as hard as possible, and most guys give me a bit of flak for that, but at the end of the day I'm glad i was ready to take the opportunity that came to me. Me and Faf spoke after my third over, and we realized hitting the top of off was the best option on this wicket, and I'm glad i could execute today. The guys are stoked, we showed what we are capable of, I'm just sad that it's too late."
FOUR runs and that's a wrap.
Faf du Plessis misses out on his hundred remains not out on 96*(103b)
