We now go into a fresh week in about half-an-hour's time, a week full of IPL action, starting with the Royal Challengers Bangalore taking on the Lucknow Super Giants on home turf tomorrow. Keep an eye on our tabs for our coverage of that game, and a lot more! This is Rajarshi Das, signing off on behalf of my good friends Pratyush Rohra and Sooryanarayanan Sesha. Good night!
An entertaining weekend of IPL action comes to an end. We've had all kinds of matches over the two days - one-sided, balanced, but of course, the afternoon game today takes the cake! It's not every day you get to see 29 runs being chased off the last over of an IPL game! Rinku Singh has etched himself into IPL folklore with a stupendous knock!
Shikhar Dhawan, Player Of The Match: I didn't expect I'd reach a score of 99. I was playing according to the situation. I hope you're happy with my strike rate today (chuckles). As a batting unit, we come up with a plan and we know that we have to put up a good total. We've got that capability in us. The wicket played differently to what we thought, it was seaming a bit and keeping low at times. We should have moulded our game accordingly. It's a learning process for our batting unit, and it's fine. (On keeping such calmness these days) It is very important, isn't it? When the water is still, you can see through it. It's better to be still and read the situation. I'm very grateful with 99, I thought I was never going to reach there. Very happy with it. (On whether this knock gave him a lot of satisfaction) It did, because I was playing according to the situation. It's a good innings in my kitty!
Shikhar Dhawan has been adjudged the Player Of The Match for his stunning unbeaten knock off 99 off 66! That's something you don't see everyday - a player from the losing team claiming the award! Tells you all about the impact of his knock!
Aiden Markram (Sunrisers Hyderabad captain): It was special. I believe that our great fan base was a privilege tonight. To get a win in front of them was very pleasing. Identifying how we can get better was quite important. But it was still about believing in ourselves. So it was to keep believing in the guys. (On Adil Rashid replaced by Mayank Markande) It's not a nice move to make (dropping Rashid) but I'm super happy for Mayank tonight. He bowled incredibly well. He has a lot of heart about him. (Was Tripathi counter-attacking post Agarwal's wicket a plan or just Tripathi doing Tripathi things?) I think it's the latter. We know his ability and he showed it again tonight. He's always a couple of balls away from doing something special. He's got all the shots. (On his own form) It turned out nicely. It was easier to do it when you've got a guy like Rahul at the other end. We'll take it tonight, we'll take the win. Just the first win so not thinking too much. But a great franchise to be a part of and a great coaching staff.
Right. Time for the post-match presentations now!
Mayank Markande (Sunrisers Hyderabad): I am very grateful for the opportunity I got and that the team management backed me. I'm very happy. This is my role - to take wickets in the middle-overs. So I backed myself to bowl the odd slower one and it worked for me. Since the impact player rule has come in, you always have to be in the game and be prepared. I always talk to Adil bhai (Rashid) about my bowling and it helps me a lot. I have worked quite a bit on my game. Aavishkar Salvi was with me during the red ball season. He has helped me a lot. (Where does he put this performance?) This will be right up there since my team won and I'm happy to contribute.
Shikhar Dhawan (Punjab Kings captain): As a batting unit, we lost too many wickets back-to-back and fell short of a good total on this ground. And that's where we lost the game. 175-180 would have been a reasonable score. It looked quite good but it was seaming a bit and it was swinging. (On his spinners) There was not much help over there but it was a good learning for us to analyze where we can get better and come back strong. I'm enjoying the captaincy. I have a very good team and a great bunch of boys. Just taking it day by day. (How much does captaincy impact the way he bats?) It doesn't affect me. Whatever the plan is I follow that plan.
Match summary:
Sunrisers Hyderabad win by 8 wickets with 17 balls to spare
Make no mistake, this was a tricky run-chase for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Their batters weren't at their best going into this game, and this was a stern test for them, especially with the momentum with the Punjab Kings going into the break. Harry Brook's wicket early on didn't help them much, but then, up stepped Rahul Tripathi.
The right-handed swashbuckling batter produced a gem of a knock on a wicket that was still good for batting, and got the job done. He was supported well by Mayank Agarwal initially, and Aiden Markram later on.
Despite the flurry of boundaries off Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal's bat initially, Punjab Kings were in the game after Arshdeep knocked the former's leg stump out of the ground. Rahul Tripathi came in at three, and together with Agarwal, the duo saw SRH through to the middle overs safely.
It was then that they faced a tricky test, trying to keep the score ticking against the spin duo of Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar. Chahar was quite difficult to pick, and Mayank Agarwal found that out the hard way. Eventually, he tried to take on the leg spinner, hoisting one towards long on, but ended up finding the man in the deep.
And then, Rahul Tripathi stepped up in sumptuous fashion. The gaps in the field seemed to widen up for him, as he kept cutting, driving and sweeping all across the field, taking the spin duo of Brar and Chahar to the cleaners. The assault didn't stop as Dhawan kept rotating his bowlers. That was the stage when the pressure was eased off the hosts; the PBKS spinners just weren't able to get it right after that.
By the time the two teams went into the final time-out break of the night, the match was almost done with the required rate under 6. It took Markram and Tripathi another over and a delivery to wrap things up after that. SRH win their first game of the season, and the only way is up for them after this! Stay tuned; the presentations will begin shortly!
Rahul Tripathi cuts with precision and seals the first win for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023! They took a while to get going initially, but Tripathi dug in, played some glorious shots, hit 74 and got the job done with support from Mayank Agarwal and Aiden Markram!
17.1 Harpreet Brar to Rahul Tripathi, FOUR! DONE AND DUSTED! Plenty of width again on a short length as Tripathi camps behind it and uses a horizontal blade to steer it square of the wicket. Places it in front of the fielder as it rockets along towards the fence thereafter and it also raises the 100-run stand between Tripathi and Markram. They've made it look too easy after a nervy start and in the end, Sunrisers Hyderabad get on the board with an 8-wicket win!
Harpreet Brar (3-0-22-0) is back into the attack
4 boundaries from Aiden Markram leaves just 3 to get for SRH with 3 overs remaining! He cut the point area in half with a couple of boundaries in that over! Tripathi would want to finish this off in the next ball itself to help the Net Run Rate!

16.6 Nathan Ellis to Aiden Markram, FOUR! CHIPPED! How did that go to the fence? Fuller in length on the off stump as Markram stands tall seemingly attempting a flick. Ends up skewing it over the bowler's head as it rolls down the straight mid-off region and makes its way to the fence. SRH can see victory within touching distance!
16.5 Nathan Ellis to Aiden Markram, FOUR MORE! ALMOST AN ACTION REPLAY! Too much width again on a similar length and Markram hangs back to crash it powerfully in front of backward point. Save your legs - there's no stopping that!
Can Markram finish it off in this over with a couple of sixes?
16.4 Nathan Ellis to Aiden Markram, FOUR MORE! DISDAINFUL! Too much width on a back of a length radar and Markram sits on one knee to power his wrists into it. He thrashes it in front of backward point who can only watch it blitz past him to the ropes
16.3 Nathan Ellis to Aiden Markram, full length delivery outside the off stump. Markram holds his ground to drive it back to the bowler's left
Ellis groans in exasperation and is on his knees as the ball whistles past fine leg!
