Match summary:
Warwickshire win by 34 runs
Sam Hain 83*(45) | Henry Brookes 4/32 (3.5) Dawid Malan 43(29) | Matthew Revis 2/25 (4)
Yorkshire might have pulled off a tactical genius had they used the Don Bradman ploy of swapping their lower-order batters for top-order ones! The second and third highest scorers of the innings batted at 9 and 10 today, and even though the pressure of winning was out of the window long ago, Dominic Bess and Jafer Chohan kept the hopes dimly lit, until Craig Miles choked them out in the 18th over.
The Yorkshire batting order simply didn't seem to have any answer to the Bears pace attack early on. It was turning out to be a rather unique pattern - the first four wickets fell off the penultimate deliveries of the first four overs! Chris Woakes and Henry Brookes had the Yorkshire top-order dancing to their tunes with some truly sensational seam bowling, and soon enough, the home side, having had the momentum going into the break, were well and truly on top!
There were bowlers picking up wickets, and then there were fielders ensuring the bowlers had more wickets to their names. Two stunning efforts in the outfield saw Yorkshire slump further, and Dawid Malan was left all by himself out there. He and Dom Bess looked to wage on a battle of sorts, until Malan was trapped in front by Jake Lintott, whom he smashed for 16 in his first over.
It was then that we saw a belated but entertaining display of hitting from Yorkshire. Young Jafer Chohan had a great time out there, and he'll go back home a very happy chap. His batting highlight of the day has to be when he took on some short stuff from Woakes and deposited him over the ropes on a couple of occasions. Chohan and Bess ensured that the margin of defeat was a lot less for the Vikings. In the end, it took almost 20 overs for the Bears to wrap things up, but they did.
It might have taken way longer than they thought it would, but Warwickshire cap off the day with a resounding win! They have done almost everything right today, and given the home crowd plenty to cheer!
19.5 Henry Brookes to Dom Leech, BOWLED! Middle stump is flattened. Birmingham Bears win by 34 runs. Full angling on middle stump, Leech gives room to access the off-side but Brookes' pace was too hot to handle. He didn't make any contact and the ball crashes onto the middle stick
Dominic Leech b Henry Brookes 0 (1b 0x4 0x6)
Dominic Leech, RHB, comes to the crease
19.4 Henry Brookes to Jafer Chohan, BOWLED! Slow back of a hand delivery, Chohan gives room to cut this away but didn't get any contact. He was early into his shot and the ball hits the top of middle stump
Jafer Chohan b Henry Brookes 37 (20b 1x4 3x6)
19.3 Henry Brookes to Jafer Chohan, yorker length to follow the batter, Chohan drills it wide of long-on and takes a brace
19.2 Henry Brookes to Jafer Chohan, drags the fuller delivery wide of long-on and gets a couple
19.1 Henry Brookes to Jafer Chohan, FOUR! Good length outside off-stump, Chohan gives room and creams it wide of extra cover for a boundary
Henry Brookes (3-0-24-2) is back into the attack
Final over, then. Warwickshire won't be too pleased with the way they're closing this game out, they have conceded far too many for their liking. How many can these two reduce the deficit by?
