ARG vs ICE Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
1 - 1
S. Agüero 19'
L. Messi (PM) 64'
23' A. Finnbogason
Who would have thunk it? Messi threw everything he had at Iceland but it was his missed penalty that proved to be the difference between the two sides. Iceland, meanwhile, have pulled off the unthinkable. There will be no-one, nothing that can stop their party tonight. For Argentina, it's a bitterly disappointing result.
That's it from us.
Make sure you join us in an hour for live coverage of Peru vs Denmark
95' Peep peeep peeeeeeep. FT: Argentina 1-1 Iceland
95' Messi lines it up. Messi fires it at the wall and the referee blows the final whistle. What a result for Iceland. What a night!
92' MESSI FIRES WIDE. The little maestro cuts in then cuts out looking for an opening but fires one with his weaker foot wide of the goal. Was that Argentina's final chance?
91' Hallfreðsson crumples to the ground in pain after a challenge from Mascherano. Precious time ticking on now
90' 5 added minutes. 5 minutes for Messi to weave his wand. 5 minutes for Iceland to hold on to a historic draw
88' Iceland substitution. The goal-scorer Finnbogason is replaced by Sigurðarson and walks off to thunderous applause
87' WHAT A SAVE BY Halldórsson. Pavon curls a delightful ball into the box looking for Higuain  but it goes straight through a bunch of bodies and the keeper makes a stunning save to thwart Argentina
86' Five minutes left. Who's gonna nick this one?
85' Final throw of the dice for Sampaoli. Gonzalo Higuain trots on in place of Meza
83' It's all Lionel Messi at the moment. Attempts a delicate one-two with Banega but it's yet again thwarted by Iceland. What an effort from them thus far.
81' MESSSSIIIII. Just wide. He finds space, looks up and curls a beauty towards goal but it flies wide of the post much to the chagrin of the Argentine faithful
78' MESSI DENIED AGAIN. A lovely ball over the top finds Messi in acres of space but an absolutely insane tackle from Sævarsson denies him just as he is about to pull the trigger. That kind of a day for the G.O.A.T
76' HUUUUUGE PENALTY SHOUT. That's a dead on penalty but the referee waves it away. Pavon pokes it past Sævarsson and goes down under the challenge but the ref is having nothing of it. Poor decision. Sampaoli is livid
75' Iceland looking for fresh legs and bring on Skulason for Gunnarsson
75' That's it for Di Maria as Pavon replaces him. Argentina getting increasingly desperate now
73' DIsappointing from the 5-time Ballon d'Or winner. Fires it straight at the wall to add to his frustration
73' Freekick for Argentina. Messi lining it up. It's his territory
71' It's RONALDO 3-0 MESSI at the moment.
70' Salvio running like a Mexican would from Trump, drills one into the box but it is met by a host of white shirts and cleared yet again
68' Poor deliver from Sigurdsson and it flies way over the head of Gunnarsson. Wasted opportunity for Iceland there
67' It's wave after wave of attacks at the moment. Iceland now charge up field and win a corner. Sigurdsson to take
66' Free kick for Argentina. Messi looking to redeem himself. Steps up, fires way over. Not a great second half for the great man
65' In all that drama, Gudmundsson has gone off in distress and replaced by Gíslason
64' MESSI MISSES. MESSI MISSES. What am I seeing here? Messi steps up, looks to curl it into the bottom left corner but Halldórsson makes a fine stop.
63' Penalty for Argentina. Clumsy challenge from Magnusson as he sends Messi tumbling in the box. Great chance for Argentina to take the lead
60' All hands on deck stuff for Iceland as Árnason boots one into touch. Guðmundsson meanwhile seems to be in a bit of trouble. He gets up gingerly though and is good to go.
59' Blocked. Messi again at the heart of the move as he finds Banega in acres of space. However, the substitute takes ages to get his shot away and R Sigurdsson gets in the way of the shot.
57' Frustration building for the Argentines. They simply cannot find a way past the Viking wall in front of them. Where is Dybala is my question?
55' OH MY LORD LIONEL MESSI ARE YOU EVEN HUMAN? Messi dances past one, twinkletoes his ways past another couple of challenges but is ultimately thwarted. Warning signs for Iceland.
First change of the game. Biglia is replaced by Ever Banega as Maradona looks on in disgust. He doesn't seem impressed with his nation's efforts today
52' Could that have been a penalty? Iceland certainly think so.  Finnbogason rises up for a header and knocks it down into Rojo's hand. 50-50 really but VAR denies the Icelanders and play continues
50' Iceland's first corner of the match. Gylfi delivers but Caballero punches away with authority.
49' Lovely football from Iceland but but they make a mess of it!! Bjarnason and Sigurdsson link up beautifully and the latter dinks a delicate ball into the box but it's just behind Finnbogason who was completely unmarked in the box
48' Header! Over the bar! Otamendi rises to meet Di Maria's corner but powers his header way over the crossbar. Another good chance goes begging
47' Aguerooo nooooo! The City striker drives past two challenges but decides against taking the shot and feeds Salvio on the right instead and the attack breakks down. Aguero should have taken that on. Will he regret that decision?
46' Aguero gets things underway. He has been relatively quiet today. Can he sprIng into life in the second 45?
We are back for the second half. Sit back and enjoy while I take you through what promises to be 45 minutes of nail-biting action
45' Peep Peeeeep. There's the half time whistle and the ref brings an end to the best half of this year's World Cup. Argentina could have had 3. Iceland could have had a couple. But it remains level. Messi and co. have a lot to do in the second half. Join us in 10 for the second half.
45' Argentina have threatened for long periods but Iceland have been sensational on the break
44' What a chance for Iceland. Sigurdsson finds space in the Argentina bix and strikes one fiercely to the far corner but Caballero makes a great save to deny Iceland the lead
42' Another shout for a penalty. Ref waves it away again. Again Salvio drives past his man on the right flank but Magnússon gets back and makes a challenge. Ball ricochets off his hand and out for a corner. Nothing in that really. Good decision from the ref, Yet again, Argentina make a meal of the corner and Arnason clears with ease
40' Shout for a penalty. Nothing given. Salvio whips one in and Biglia tries to get on the end of it but Sigurðsson's outstretched foot denies him and he goes down under the challenge. Only a corner given.
39' Lovely stuff from Messi again. A brilliant one-two with Tagliafico and Messi finds himself in space but his shot is well blocked yet again and Argentina get a corner
37' Argentina being patient in their build-up moving from side to side in search of an opening. However, Iceland have been very organised this half. Messi tries to set Aguero in behind the defence but Arnason gets a boot to it in time. Frustration building for Sampaoli's men
34' Otamendi channels his inner Toni Kroos and delivers a sumptuous ball over the top but it's just beyond the reach of Meza's outstretched boot. Argentina threatening now.
33' Close but not close enough. Biglia tries to curl one into the far corner from 35 yards out but it flies high and wide.
32' Gunnarsson has gone to ground but he was tripped up by the referee. No you don't get a foul for that Gunnarsson get back up there.
31' Argentina have had 75% of the possession. You read that right. 75%. Every single Argentina player has had more touches than their Iceland counterparts but it's goals that matter and Iceland have 1 of them.
30' It's Rory Delap time. Magnússon unleashes a long, long, long throw but it's headed away by Rojo and Argentina can build again
29' Di Maria whips it in and Otamendi gets his head on it but it's straight at Halldórsson who claims it without a fuss
28' I cannot take my eyes of this!! Messi again dances past 2 challenges with absurd ease and plays in Di Maria who wins a corner.
26' Argentina are rocked. They looked set to get 3-4 in this first half but Iceland have stolen something outta nothing.
22' GOAAAAAAALLL. Iceland equalise. Unbelievable scenes. A ball is whipped into the box from the right but Sigurdsson cannot get his head to it. It ricochets back to him on the right and a fierce shot is saved by Caballero but straight into the path of A. Finnbogason who fires it into the back of the net.
20' Lionel Messi BEHAVE. He picks it up, plays a brilliant one-two and curls a speculative effort from 25 yards but straight at H. Halldórsson who breathes a sigh of relief.
18' GOOOOOOOAALLLLLLLL. AGUEEROOOOOO. Rojo picks up the ball in midfield and miskicks woefuly. It lands at Aguero's feet and he turns Messi-esque and unleashes one into the top corner. What a strike. What a goal.
17' MESSSI MAGIC but it's saved. The little magician cuts in from the right and drills a shot but it's a little too central and the keeper palms it away. That was hit perfectly and a few inches to either side would've been a goal
16' Messi goes down in the box, but there are no appeals for a penalty and they carry on. Great defending by K. Árnason
15' Messi is seeing a lot of the ball early on but it's all a bit too deep. He tries to drive at the Iceland defence but is thwarted yet again.
13' A sensational start to the match. Iceland are here to compete and do not like the pushovers many felt they would be at the start. Their fans acknowledge the effort as the Viking Clap resonates across the stadium
12' Di Maria overhits it and it's headed clear by K. Árnason. Danger averted
11' It's end to end stuff here! Argentina race down the other end and win a corner of their own. Di Maria to take
8' WHAT A CHANCE WHAT A MISS BY ICELAND. Caballero tries to play out the back but his pass is woefully short. Iceland pounce but Bjarnason misses from 6 yards out with just the keeper to beat.
7' GOOOOOAL NOOOO! Just wide. Messi whips a delicious ball int the box and Tagliafico flicks it on just inches past the far post. How close was that?
6' This isn't the UFC. Messi is hauled to the ground by Bjarnason but the referee decides against taking any action
5' Gudmundsson wins it back in midfield and feeds Bjarnason but he is easily dispossessed by Otamendi with a strong tackle and Argentina build from the back again
4' Chance. Messi whips one in and after a game of ping-pong it drifts just wide of the post. First half-chance of the game
3' OUCH! That's gotta hurt. Tagliafico and Arnason challenge for the same ball and it's the Argentina left-back that bears the brunt of the tackle. Freekick to Argentina
2' Argentina feeling their way into the game with a bunch of neat little passes. Iceland press high up the pitch but are unable to win it back and fall back again
1' An energetic start from Iceland as Sigurdsson dispossesses Tagliafico on the left and gets a shot away. It's poorly struck though and flies harmlessly wide of the post.
Peep peep peeeeeeeeep. We are off. Argentina kicking from left to right in their all-black away kit. It's on! Iceland get us underway
It's time! Messi leads his side out of the tunnel to raucous applause from the fans. It's 2 time champions vs first-time challengers. You could not write a better script than this!
Stat attack: In their last 12 attempts, Argentina have only failed to go past the first round once - in 2002. They have not lost a group game in the last 3 World Cups

What did the managers say?
Sampaoli on Messi: "He's very fit, well prepared and looking forward to this World Cup and he hopes to be able to achieve his dream. He's a player who is very skilled so I don't think he's under pressure, he shouldn't be under pressure, he is a player who makes people very happy with his game. I don't think this should be Messi's last World Cup. His skills and the way he plays mean that he will be the one who decides. He is a genius and he plays like a genius, I don't think it will be his last."
Iceland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson: "People can't help but love us. We certainly feel it. We have not attacked anyone or been at war with anyone. Well, except the ‘cod war’ and nobody got hurt there."
Cristiano Ronaldo stole the headlines yesterday with a scintillating hat-trick. Now it's Messi's turn. What will the little magician treat us to today? I, for one, simply cannot wait.
Messi carried Argentina singlehandedly in the previous World Cup and the onus will be on him yet again to lift the Albiceleste one last time. Iceland, on the other hand, with a population of 350000 - probably the number of fans Messi has in this World Cup - powered by Sigurdsson after Sigurdsson after Sigurdsson are dark horses this time around.
While we wait for kick-off, take a look at this majestic, majestic man
This Argentina line-up looks stunning even without the likes of Dybala and Higuain. The defence looks iffy to put it kindly but that attack gives me the shivers!
For Argentina, it's all about wiping the slate clean and banishing ghosts of the past. La Albiceleste went heartbreakingly close to lifting the trophy in 2014, but were stopped in their tracks by Mario Gotze and co in the summit clash. Now, more than ever, they will look to right some wrongs and get their hands on the trophy for the first time since 1986.

Iceland, meanwhile, have no slate to clean, no inner demons to conquer. Powered by that euphoric Viking clap, Iceland booked a berth in Russia with an emphatic qualifying campaign. However, it doesn't get much more difficult than this with Strákarnir okkar up against arguably the greatest player to have ever kicked a football, Leo Messi
Line-ups are out:
Argentina (4-2-3-1):
Caballero; Salvio, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Biglia, Mascherano; Meza, Messi, Di María; Aguero
Iceland (4-4-2) Halldorsson; Saevarsson, Arnason, R Sigurdsson, Magnusson; JB Gudmundsson, Hallfredsson, A Gunnarsson, G Sigurdsson, Bjarnason; Finnbogason

Argentina vs Iceland: Team News

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli went out on a limb and decided to announce his starting XI a whole 24 hours before kickoff, because why not? 'It's only Iceland after all' is what most of you must be thinking, however, Sampaoli feels his side cannot be complacent, he feels he cannot be complacent and that the naming of his XI had nothing to do with the opponents. Sigh!
Caballero will start in goal for Argentina with Rojo and Otamendi in front of him. Tagliafico and Salvio will man the flanks, while Mascherano and Biglia sit deep to prevent the sporadic Iceland attacks. The big question was how Sampaoli would fit Messi, Dybala, Higuain and Di Maria into the same team and he has decided the best way is to simply drop two of them. Sergio Aguero has got the nod of approval from his gaffer while Meza will in all likelihood start on the right wing with the little magician Messi given a free role behind the striker.

For Iceland, it should be all about defence although they have quite a few talented attacking prospects. The big news emerging from the camp is that Aron Gunnarsson is off the treatment table and ready to take the field. With him in the side, Iceland will look to stifle La Albiceleste with a 5-man midfield of Gunnarsson, Hallfreðsson, Guðmundsson, Bjarnason and Sigurðsson with Finnbogason the lone man up top.

Argentina vs Iceland: Probable lineups

Argentina (confirmed XI): Caballero; Salvio, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Biglia, Mascherano; Meza, Messi, Di María; Aguero.

Iceland (probable XI):
Halldorsson; Saevarsson, Arnason, R Sigurdsson, Magnusson; JB Gudmundsson, Hallfredsson, A Gunnarsson, G Sigurdsson, Bjarnason; Finnbogason

Argentina vs Iceland: Form guide

Argentina squeaked through their qualifying with a piece of Messi brilliance securing their passage in the World Cup. They were torn to shreds by Spain in a friendly and huffed and puffed their way past Haiti and they will need to pull up their socks and put in a shift today against what will be dogged resistance from Iceland.

Iceland: W-L-L-L-D

Iceland's form is not much to write home about, losing three consecutive games to Mexico, Norway and Peru but they steadied the ship with a 2-2 draw against Ghana in their final tune-up game, after ceding a two-goal lead. Argentina though will be a challenge of an entirely different magnitude.

Argentina vs Iceland: Head to Head

Well, this is easy. The two sides have never met before in either competitive fixtures or friendlies.

Argentina vs Iceland: Prediction

Predicted scoreline: Argentina 3-0 Iceland

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hattrick yesterday and I think Messi will be itching to outdo him. It's gonna be a cakewalk for Argentina with Aguero grabbing the opener and Messi a second-half brace.
