A brace from Theo Walcott handed Arsenal a comfortable 2-0 victory against Basel.
Arsenal were in complete command from start to finish and could have easily had 10 to 12 on another night. Although Basel did start off decently, Walcott's header in 7th minute completely shattered the Swiss side's confidence.
Theo then made it 2 just before the half hour mark with a brilliant finish past Vaclik. The Basel keeper was on song ever since then and kept his side in the game with a string of fine saves just before the break,
It was much of the same in the second half as Arsenal pushed for a third goal but were denied by Vaclik's magnificence.
Although Basel did have a couple of chances late on, Ospina managed to keep them out.
Wenger will be delighted with his side's performance on the whole but will be worried with their finishing.
Thanks for joining us. See you next time
The final whistle blows
We will have 2 minutes of added time
First Ospina does brilliantly to deny Sporar. An Arsenal counter attack sees Chamberlain rounding the keeper but running out of space to take a shot. He cuts back in and tries a shot but Vaclik is back in time to make a save
Sanchez weaves his way past a couple of challenges but is finally brought down by Elyounassi right at the edge of the box. Cazrola hits the resulting free kick straight at the wall
A heavy collision between Mustafi and Steffen and both players crumple to the turf in pain. They do get up eventually though and play continues
81' The Gunners seem content to sit on their 2-0 lead. They have stopped attacking and are inviting Basel onto them
79' Meanwhile, PSG have taken a 3-1 lead against Ludogorets thanks to an Edinson Cavani brace. Ludogorets did however miss a penalty which could have altered proceedings massively
75' Third and final substitution for Arsene Wenger's side as Kieran Gibbs comes on for Monreal whose final contribution was a 40-yard effort that flew into the top tier of the Emirates
That is what I would have been saying if the Gunners had shown slightly more prowess in front of goal
70' Double substitution for the Gunners. Alex Iwobi and Walcott are replaced by Elneny and Chamberlain. So no hattrick tonight for Theo. he ahs had a great performance though and goes off to a standing ovation from the fans
68' I'm getting tired of describing the Arsenal misses. Cazorla with some great quick feet drives past 2 defenders before picking out Ozil who squares to Alexis who pokes it wide when it was harder to miss. Wow
The resulting corner by Zuffi is flapped at by Ospina and Bjanarson gets to the rebound but skies his effort
Bjanarson tries to curl a first time effort from the edge of the box past the keeper. It is headed for the top corner until Ospina manages to get a fingertip to it
Zuffi delivers but Ospina punches for another corner. Another Zuffi delivery and Ospina again runs off his line but catches it this time.
58' Same old same old for Arsenal. This time Cazorla tries to whip a ball into the box but it is easily claimed by Vaclik
57' It's just chance after chance missed by Arsenal. Iwobi is the culprit this time as he drives at the heart of the Basel defence before unleashing a shot wide of the near post. Poor effort in the end by the Nigerian
56' I really don't understand what Basel are doing at the moment. The defense is in shambles. the midfielders are unable to retain the ball and Doumbia is intent on taking on Mustafi and Koscielny alone without any success at all.
Sanchez applies some great pressure on Suchy and dispossesses him deep in the BAsel half. He then tries to square it to Ozil in the middle but a White shirt just manages to cut it out. it was 2 against 1 there. Poor stuff from Alexis in the end
Alexis threads a perfect ball in behind the Swiss defence. Walcott gets on the end of it and tries a chip over the keeper. The ball flies well wide of the far post but luckily for Theo, the offside flag had already gone up
50' Walcott gets into the action receiving a ball wide and cutting inside before being brought down by Adama Traore.
48' Arsenal continue where they left off at the break. A neat interchange between Iwobi and Monreal followed by which the Spaniard delivers a low and hard cross into the 6 yard box. Sanchez slides in to finish but it is taken off his toes by Vaclik.
46' No changes made by either manager at half time.
Hello and welcome back for the second half. Basel have it all to do in the second period. Can they pull off a shocking upset? stay tuned
A Walcott brace means that Arsenal head into the break two goals to the good. Can Basel fight back? Join us in10 minutes for the second half
45' Into the final minute of the first half. Arsenal could have easily had about 8. But Basel still only trail by 2 and are still in the game
Sanchez with a great cross finds Ozil at the far post but his right-footed volley hits the side netting
Again Sanchez is put through on goal. Again his shot is saved by the Basel keeper who is having an outstanding game
The German is put through on goal by Iwobi and with only the keeper to beat sees his shot go well wide of the far post
Great play by the Gunners again as Walcott exchanges passes with Bellerin before squaring it to cCazorla The Spaniard then reverse passes to a completely unmarked Sanchez who tries to dink it over the keeper but is denied by his outstretched arms.
32' Doumbia again tries to run at the heart of the Arsenal defence but yet again is denied by Mustafi's outstretched leg. The German has been brilliant tonight
31' Basel have not shown up tonight. The Gunners are walking right through their Swiss opponents with absurd ease, creating chances at will
27' Theo Walcott producing finishes like Aguero at the moment. He is on fire and BAsel will have to do better to keep this scoreline respectable
26' A brilliant one-two between Walcott and Alexis results in the Englishman receiving the ball at the edge of the Basel box. he then powers a low and hard drive past the keeper into the back of the net
26' Walcott again. What a goal
22' Corner for Arsenal.
The ambidextrous Santi delivers with his left foot but it is easily headed away
20' Yellow card for Marek Suchy as he hauls Sanchez to the ground from behind to prevent a counter. professional foul by the Basel captain
Cazorla again releases Sanchez who turns his marker brilliantly before threading a beautiful ball in to Ozil. The keeper dashes off his line to claim although the offside flag was already raised
