Barcelona start their new league campaign, the same way they ended the last one, with a win. Ernesto Valverde's men were always comfortable on the ball and weren't really tested by Betis.
Messi was in the mood but failed to find the back of the net, hitting the woodwork on three occasions. It was Gerard Deulofeu who stepped up to the occasion as he assisted both the goals to earn a standing ovation from the home support.
After the disaster against Real Madrid, Barcelona would welcome a win and so they have tonight. They will look to have a strong finish to the transfer window to assemble a team capable of challenging Real Madrid - who look unstoppable right now.
...
90+3' Full-Time: Barcelona 2-0 Real Betis
...
90+2' Yellow Card: Lucas Digne is booked for stopping a counter attack.
...
90+1' Messi drives into the box once again, looking his way to dance inside the box but his run is blocked and he is forced into shooting which results into a corner.
...
90' 3 minutes of added time.
...
88' Sergio Leon chases an over the top ball and Digne tries to clear it, not the best one, and it sets up nicely for Fabian, who lets one fly into the top corner but he fails to make the best of connections and the ball flies over.
...
Can Barcelona get Messi his opening goal with less than 3 minutes left in the game?
...
86' Substitution: Jordi Alba comes off for Lucas Digne.
...
Messi is going after every loose ball, he is really hungry for that goal.
...
83' Messi is turning on the style here. After receiving the ball on the right, the Argentine cuts in before trying to curl one into the top corner but it is blocked.
...
82' From the resulting corner Messi's header is just wide of the far post.
...
That was a venomous shot from Messi's left-foot!
...
81' MESSI HITS THE UPRIGHT, FOR THE 3rd TIME!!!  Barcelona with a spell of possession as they cautiously pass the ball around before Messi decides to break the shackles, he lets on fly from outside of the box and it smashes against the upright once again, what a shot and it is a shame it is not a goal.
...
Denis Suarez is warming up to come on.
...
78' Substitution: Betis make their final substitution as Fabian Ruiz comes on to replace Camarasa.
...
Messi has had 6 shots so far in this game, will he open his La Liga account tonight?
...
75' Ohhh, Barcelona go close. Messi has the ball and he turns in his characteristic fashion to get rid of his marker, he drives forward before laying it off for Vidal - who is playing as a forward right now - the defender is unable to control it and is wrestled off the ball as Messi comes and tries to regain possession but it is cleared.
...
72' Substitution: Nahuel is taken off for Francis Guerrero
...
72' Substitution: Aleix Vidal comes on to replace Deulofeu, who earns a standing ovation from the Camp Nou faithful.
...
71' Barcelona win a free-kick on the other end and Messi lines up to take it. The Argentine is not far away but just couldn't score, this is down the right and Messi aims for the top corner but it is just over.
...
69' Roberto gifts the ball to Nahuel as he tries to play a back pass to Umtiti, the Betis forward tries to go for glory from just outside the box and it flies over.
...
68' Substitution: Javi Garcia comes on to replace Narvaez.
...
67' Just not Messi's day, today. First, it is Deulofeu who tries to square it to the Argentine but it is just behind him before Rakitic tries to do the same and it is cut out.
...
64' Deulofeu drives into the box from the left and a defender comes sliding in, the referee points for a goal kick but the Barcelona man wanted a goal kick instead.
...
63' YELLOW CARD: Nahuel is the first Betis player to go into the referee's books for his lunge on Sergi Roberto.
...
60' OHHH!!!! MESSI GOES CLOSE AGAIN, VERY VERY CLOSE!
Rakitic wins the ball and passes it to Busquets who just gives it to Messi to do his thing, the Argentine drives forward before curling one into the bottom left corner - the near post of Adan. The 5-time Ballon d'Or winner is successful in beating the goalkeeper but it crashes against the upright and goes out.
...
57' Messi with a bit of his magic there. The Argentine drives into the box slaloming past a couple of defenders before trying to cut inside, he is successful with the first bit but is blocked for the second.
...
56' Barcelona are once again happy in just rolling the ball around, they are not under much pressure from the away side.
...
54' Jordi Alba, who has just been booked, stops the run of Narvaez and Betis win a free-kick in a dangerous position.
...
52' Yellow Cards: First booking of the evening goes to Jordi Alba, who goes studs up into a challenge from behind on Nahuel.
...
50' Messi plays Deulofeu through down the right but the Spaniard does not take the opportunity to drive forward and instead after some thinking plays it back to Messi who tries to release Alcacer but the forward is offside.
...
49' Barcelona win a corner and Deulofeu makes a mess of it, swinging it straight at the head of the first man, poor corner.
...
47' Javier Mascherano runs into Sergio Leon from behind and Betis win a free-kick. It is followed by another foul by Busquets.
...
46' And Sergio Leon gets us underway for the second half.
...
Quique Setien's side have all to do in the second half, is there an upset on the cards?
...
The Betis players are in the tunnel, contemplating a comeback against the mighty Barcelona. The home side's players make their way out now.
...
We are almost ready for the second half.
...
Barcelona end the first half the more dominant of the two sides, after a slow start to the game. Gerard Deulofeu has been the biggest positive so far in the game for Ernesto Valverde's side. The new arrival hit the shot which was deflected past Adan by Tosca before providing the assist for Roberto.
Messi has been lively but not at his best, we will have to wait and watch what he has in-store for us in the second half.
