BEL vs ENG Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
Belgium
2 - 0
FT
England
T. Meunier 4'
E. Hazard 82'
Belgium leave Russia with their best ever World Cup finish. They can hold their heads high. De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku were all excellent for the most part.

For England, there were a lot of positives but ultimately, there's nothing coming home but the players. Harry Kane will in all likelihood win the Golden Boot but that will be of little significance considering the big picture.

That's it from me. Join us tomorrow for the big one!
FT: Belgium 2-0 England.
89' England look despondent. That goal has knocked the stuffing out of them. 3 minutes to be added on
85' Great challenge by Stones to deny De Bruyne. Another scintillating counter but Hazard delays the ball to De Bruyne by a fraction. That's enough for Stones to charge in and throw himself in the way of the shot
83' Final throw of the dice for England. Loftus-Cheek, who has had a decent game today, is replaced by Dele Alli
82' GOOOOOOALLL. EDEN HAZAAAARD. De Bruyne finally does what he's capable of, picks out Hazard with a lovely pass in behind the defence. Hazard gives Pickford the eyes and smashes it into the bottom corner. Belgium lead by 2 and this game is now over
80' Stunning save by Pickford. Belgium produce some of the best football of the match as they counter in style. Two backheels, one from De Bruyne and one from Hazard and they are in behind the defence. It's crossed out to Meunier on the right who unleashes first time but Pickford produces a tremendous save to keep England in the game
79' Trippier in the action again. Again dinks a lovely ball into the box, but Lingard cannot flick it into the path of Rashford
78' Tielemans trots off and is replaced by Dembele
78' Harry Maguire goes into the ref's book for dissent. Not a great night for him
77' Alderweireld has been an absolute rock today. Yet again he towers over Kane and heads away a Trippier cross
76' Belgium race away on the counter and De Bruyne feeds Mertens on the left. He cuts in and fires one horribly wide of the post
75' Tielemans, who is set to be withdrawn, gives it away cheaply and England can build again
75' Flashes wide. Trippier delivers another peach, Maguire rises to meet it but glances it just wide of the post
74' Lingard is now sent tumbling to the floor by Witsel and England have another freekick deep in Belgium territory
73' Yet another England corner. Trippier again delivers but it's again headed out rather comfortably
72' England bossing the game now and Rashford wins a freekick in a promising position. Trippier and Dier standing over it
70' Cleared off the line. Dier and Rashford play a lovely one-two which releases Dier in behind the defence. He dinks it over Courtois but Alderweireld throws himself at it and just about clears it away
69' Eric Dier decides to take matters into his own hands. Picks it up 40yards out and looks to fire one into the top corner, but unfortunately hits it straight at the keeper
68' Wicked ball into the box by Loftus-Cheek this time, but there's no one on the end of it. Where was Kane?
66' Corner is whipped into the box and headed out to Kane who is having an absolute shocker. Attempts a sensational volley but miscues and sends it toward the corner flag
65' Trippier is causing some problems down the right hand side. Again finds some space and drifts it into the middle but it's cleared away for a corner
63' De Bruyne whips the corner in, Kompany produces a remarkable backheel but Stones is on hand to clear
62' Fantastic ball over the top by Alderweireld, Hazard takes it in his stride and tries to feed Meunier but Delph puts in a last-ditch tackle and clears for a corner
60' No Golden Boot for Lukaku. He is being replaced by Mertens
56' OOOOOH LUKAKU.It's that infamous first touch that lets him down again. De Bruyne threads a beautiful ball in behind the defence but Lukaku's touch sends the ball rolling towards the keeper.
56' England upping the ante as they search for that elusive equaliser
55' LINGAAARD! SO CLOOOSE. Smashes one toward goal first-time but it flies narrowly wide of Courtois' far post. Kane too was close to getting on the end of that
53' Loftus-Cheek leads England's counter and races down the right flank. Again looks for Kane in the box but again it's dealt with relatively easily
53' Kompany is in some serious pain. He copped one right on the face by Maguire. He's a warrior though and yep! he's back up and ready to go
51' Stones is cautioned as he latches onto Hazard like a leach and brings him down with a couple of horrible challenges
50' Trippier whips a peach of a cross into the box, but it's somehow squeezed over the bar by Vertonghen. What a chance that was
49' OOOH EDEN. Takes the mickey out of England as he dances right through the heart of the defence. He overdoes it though and is crowded out
48' Jones of all people is up there trying to create. Flies past two challenges and tries to curl one into the box but it's too close to the keeper
46' Lingard into the action straightaway. Races away toward the Belgium defence but plays a woeful pass directed at Kane.
Half time substitutions: Sterling and Rose are replaced by Lingard and Rashford
We are back for the second half. This can only get better. It has to
47' That's that. Belgium lead courtesy Meunier and have held on to that lead well. England look completely toothless. Join us in 10 for the second half
46' 2 minutes of added time in the first half. Even the ref looks like he's had enough of this
45' Alderweireld incredibly finds himself on the right flank. His cross is oh so terrible and lands in the stands. Story of the match so far
44' Where are the goals? Both teams content with passing it around with occasional punt up field. This has been a disappointment
42' Vermaelen gets his first piece of action. Sterling pressures him on the ball and forces him to concede a throw
38' Belgium make the first change of the game. Chadli is replaced by Vermaelen.
37' It's all gotten a rather messy at the moment. De Bruyne is having a shocker tbh. Tries to whip one into the box but it's well over the heads of his strikers and out for a goalkick
34' Alderweireld flashes it over. De Bruyne sends a corner towards the edge of the box. It's lofted back in by Tielemans and Alderweireld sticks a leg out at it but sends it just over the post
32' Ooooh Lukaku. Lovely turn sends Stones sprawling in midfield.
29' Lovely play from Lukaku as he holds off two challenges and feeds it wide to Chadli. He sets up Hazard on the edge of the box but Maguire throws himself in the way of the shot heroically
27' Hopeful ball over the top towards Lukaku but Stones intercepts. They make a mess of the clearance though and Meunier punces and whips a lovely ball into the box. It flies over the heads of the Belgian heads and out for a throw
26' England beginning to claw their way back into the game after that fiery start by Belgium
23' What a miss by Kane. Sterling lays it off to Kane on the edge of the box but he makes a mess of his strike and sends it way wide of the goal
20' Trippier whips the corner into the box, Maguire towers over the Belgian defenders but his header lacks power and lands safely in Courtois' hands
19' Loftus-Cheek you beauty. Dances past two challenges and squares one into the six yard box but Kompany again clears in the nick of time
18' Sterling and Delph attempt a neat little give and go on the edge of the box but Sterling is crowded out and Kompany clears
16' Noooo Lukaku. De Bruyne threads the needle yet again but Lukaku's first touch lets him down with only the keeper to beat. That should have been 2
15' Witsel attempts a clever dink over the England defence with Meunier sneaking in behind but Jones gets in the way
13' Dier spreads the play with a lovely crossfield into the path of Rose. He feeds Delph in the centre but his shot is woeful and straight into the hands of the keeper
11' What a save by Pickford. Lukaku's pass is underhit but Maguire makes a mes of things and it De Bruyne finds himself in acres of space. He fires one at goal but it takes a massive deflection which is kept out by the outstretched hand of Pickford
8' Ooooooh De Bruyne. What an opportunity squandered. Lukaku again leads the counter and reverses it to De Bruyne who attempts an extravagant backheel into the path of Mertens but it's cleared away by Jones
7' Trippier whips a dangerous looking ball into the box, but Vertonghen gets in the way and boots it out into touch
6' That should ease the Belgian nerves. England were pressing high up the pitch and looked in command
4' GOOOOALLLLLLLL. Lukaku picks one up near the halfway line and threads a beautiful through ball in behind the defence. Chadli squares to Meunier who taps it past the keeper and into the net. Belgium lead. What a start to the game
2' Loftus Cheek presses high up the field and forces Vertonghen into a hasty clearance. Steady start by both teams
1' Dangerous ball out by Alderweireld and it's intercepted by Rose near the halfway line. Witsel gets in the way of the subsequent pass though and danger is averted
The anthems and other shenanigans are done. It's time for kickoff! Belgium get us underway in their yellow and black, kicking from left to right
Belgium vs England - Preview

It's not coming home. Let me just get that out of the way. England came unstuck against the wily Croatians last time around which means they play a more or less meaningless match today instead of tomorrow, against Belgium instead of France.Third-place matches generally tend to throw up a few surprises - and tons of goals.

Last time around, Netherlands coasted past Brazil while in 2010, Germany produced a remarkable comeback to pip Uruguay. Both teams have vowed to take this match seriously though. For England, the game presents an opportunity to earn their best ever finish since 1966 while for Belgium, it is a chance for the Golden Generation to cement their place in history and return with the bronze. There is also that tiny matter of the Golden Boot. Harry Kane leads the pack with 6 goals with Lukaku hot on his heels with 4. Kylian Mbappe too is in the mix with 3 goals thus far.
Confirmed lineups:

Belgium XI: Courtois; Kompany, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Meunier, Tielemans, Witsel, Hazard, De Bruyne; Lukaku, Mertens
England XI: Pickford; Rose, Dier, Stones, Jones, Maguire, Trippier, Loftus-Cheek, Delph, Sterling, Kane

Belgium vs England: Team News

Gareth Southgate has promised to make changes to the side that came up short against Croatia. Kieran Trippier tweaked his groin in the semi-final loss and is not expected to feature. Kyle Walker, Jordan Henderson and Ashley Young too are set to be rested. Harry Kane who is leading the race for the Golden Boot will start up top for England and Vardy might get the nod ahead of Raheem Sterling, who has come in for some criticism after a few shoddy displays, or Jesse Lingard. Nick Pope could make his World Cup bow in place of Jordan Pickford.

For Belgium, Roberto Martinez could opt to bench Romelu Lukaku which means a return for either Dries Mertens or Michy Batshuayi. Yannick Carrasco is also likely to replace Nacer Chadli on the left while Meunier is back from a one-game suspension and could line up on the right.

Belgium vs England: Probable lineups

Belgium Probable XI: Courtois; Dendoncker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Meunier, Fellaini, Witsel, Carrasco, De Bruyne; Hazard, Januzaj, Mertens

England Probable XI: Pope; Rose, Alexander-Arnold, Maguire, Cahill; Alli, Loftus-Cheek, Rashford, Sterling; Vardy, Kane

Belgium vs England: Head to Head

England have lost just 2 of their last 22 meetings (W15, D5) with their European neighbours, including the 1-0 defeat in the group stages this World Cup.

Most recent meeting: Belgium 1-0 England

Adnan Januzaj clearly didn't read the script when the two teams met earlier this year as his screamer ensured Belgium topped the group and faced the might of Brazil and then France, against whom they eventually got knocked out.

Belgium vs England: Prediction

Predicted scoreline: Belgium 3-2 England

These third-place playoffs are usually fun. Both teams will go for it and there will be wide open spaces to exploit for the likes of Vardy, Sterling, De Bruyne and Hazard. I'm expecting a goal-fest with Belgium to snatch a winner late.
