That's it from Abhishek Kundu. Thank you for reading the live blog. Do login to Sportskeeda to get the latest Indian football news.
Fulltime thoughts- Tondonba Singh did a brilliant job to contain Jayesh Rane in the second half. Thoi SIngh had a marvellous game. Unlucky to be on the losing side. Chennaiyin's problems of their misfiring strikers doesn't solve. Jeje was substituted and his replacement Salom was ineffective too. Lanzarote adjudged the Hero of the Match for his brace and brilliant set-pieces.
94' That's it. The referee blows the final whistle. What an entertaining game we had had. Chennaiyin could have equalized in the dying embers of the game if Thoi Singh had kept his shot on target. But, its Chennaiyin 2-3 ATK.
94' ATK win a foul in their own box. That should see the time out.
93' MISS Thoi Singh latches onto a brilliant pass from Calderon. But, his shot is agonizingly above the crossbar with a lot of ATK bodies in the box.
91' Hitesh Sharma is down. Probably buying some time out. And, he is out on a stretcher.
90' Four minutes added on. But, there is going to be a lot of drama in these four minutes.
90' The ball is again in the feet of Thoi SIngh. But, the cross hits the legs of Ricky this time.
89' GOOAAAAAALLLL- Chennaiyin pull one back. And, its Isaac this time. He nets the ball in after a brilliant low pass from Thoi Singh. The game has not been over.
87' ATK are parking the bus now to win 3-1. They don't want to give Chennaiyin a consolation.
83' MISS Isaac does a brilliant job to go past Ankit and gives a dangerous cross towards Thoi Singh. However, the goalscorer's first time shot is wide. That should have been 3-2 Thoi.
80' Eugeneson makes his second appearance off the campaign
OFF- Balwant Singh
ON- Eugeneson Lyngdoh

OFF- Manuel Lanzarote
ON- Eli Babalj

79' Yellow cards given to Laldinliana Renthlei and Carlos Salom for protesting the penalty as there was a foul beforehand which the referee didn't give.

79' And, he scores. The same wine in a new bottle. To the bottom left corner.
79' Lanzarote steps up again.
77' PENALTY ATK win a penalty after Chennaiyin make a goal-line clearance off John Johnson's shot. However, the ball strikes the hand of a Chennaiyin defender in the process.
76' Sanjiban, instead of catching it, tries to punch it with no pressure on him whatsoever. Balwant fail to capitalize on it and, the home side get a goal-kick.
75' Chennaiyin are pressing hard, whereas ATK are trying to slow it down. We head into the last fifteen minutes of the game.
71' Lanzarote takes it short, but Salom makes a diving header to avert the ensuring low cross.
70' Now, ATK have a corner. Ricky's cross is cut out by Dinliana.
69' Isaac's corner-kick is too deep for Mailson. He heads it wide. Chennaiyin are slowly being the better team in the air, but they need to find the target.
68' ATK make their first change. Maimouni had an off-game. Santos should inject some impetus to ATK's midfield.

OFF- El Maimouni Noussair
ON- Everton Santos
68' ATK are on the backfoot as Chennaiyin is growing into the game.
66' Raphael Augusto gives a brilliant through ball towards Salom. But, his first touch lets him down and ATK get a goal-kick.
65' Laldinliana Ralte's cross from the right wing is caught by Arindam. Something tells me Chennaiyin will score from a cross.
63' ATK wins a corner after Mailson sees out the danger from a Lanzarote free-kick.
61' OFFSIDE Salom is offside. ATK maintain their line brilliantly.
58' Double Substitutions for Chennaiyin FC
ON- Anirudh Thapa
OFF- Jeje
ON- Carlos Salom
OFF- Andrea Orlandi
55' Isaac gives a brilliant cross to Thoi Singh and Jeje, but Arindam dives to make the save. Kudos to the keeper for saving the shot from inside the 6-yard box.
54' Both the teams looking to exploit the wings and heading it in. However, the defenders are standing tall in every occassion.
51' SAVE Hitesh gives a brilliant through ball to Balwant, but no one is there on the box. He gives it backwards to Gerson who tries his luck from distance. But, Sanjiban positions himself perfectly and averts the danger.
48' Andre Bikey and Eli Sabia are cutting out the crosses for their respective sides. But, a goal is sure to come.
Chennaiyin have made their first change in the half-time
ON Tondonba Singh
OFF Jerry Lalrinzuala
45' SECOND HALF begins. Can Chennaiyin level things up at the Marina Arena, or will we see ATK increasing their lead? Whatever you tell, there are lots of goals to come in the second half.
Half time thoughts- Jayesh Rane's confidence has grown exponentially after scoring the goal. Chennaiyin defenders will have to mark him out.
Jeje, on the other hand, is yet to get an opportunity. Strikers are meant to be at the right place at the right time. He is nowhere to be found when the midfielders need him.
HALF TIME That's it. An entertaining first half comes to an end. Three brilliant finishes in the first half. More goals to come in the second half.
45' Only 60 seconds to be added in this exciting first half. Will Chennaiyin get one back?
44' GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLL Lanzarote gives the visitors the lead after sending Sanjiban the wrong way. He calmly slots it on the bottom left corner. A sweet finish.
43' PENALTY for ATK Lanzarote passes the ball onto Hitesh. The youngster's shot is handed by Eli Sabia. ATK have a golden opportunity to make it 2-1.
39' Lanzarote does a brilliant one-two with Balwant but his shot is way above the crossbar. You have to finish better than that Lanza.
37' Isaac with a dangerous cross from the left wing, but Orlandi can't reach it. Another chance goes begging for Orlandi.
36' Laldinliana's cross is met out by Bikey. He chests it towards Arindam. Disappointing cross to say the least.
33' Calderon and Gerson are doing their job brilliantly. Fizzling out the attack by doing their defensive duties in the midfield.
30' MISS Hitesh feeds a brilliant diagonal through ball for Lanzarote. Sanjiban wasn't in his position and the former FC Goa player tried to dink it through. However, the shot is agonizingly over the bar.
28' The tempo is slowing down a little bit as the defenders are getting the better of the ball. But, something tells me there will be another goal in this half.
26' FREE KICK Chennaiyin gets a free kick after Bikey handles the ball. Can Chennaiyin make it 2-1?
24' GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL Thoi Singh levels things up for the home side. A clean strike by the Indian in the bottom right corner after Mailson Alves feeds him through. He angled the shot perfectly and Arindam had no chance.
23' CORNER Chennaiyin win their third corner after Laldinliana's shot is blocked.
21' Confidence oozing in the ATK players after the goal. However, they are fumbling in the final third.
17' MISS Lanzarote with a brilliant cross from the centre and Balwant has only the keeper to beat. However, he heads it wide. Nonetheless, the offside flag was raised a few seconds later. Replays show that Laldinliana had played him on, though. The assistant is lucky that the ball hadn't gone in.
16' Raphael Augusto misses his header from a wonderful corner. ATK are struggling to keep in check the corner-kicks.
14' GOOOOOAAAAAALLLL!!! Jayesh Rane with a thunderous screamer from outside the box. Acres of space given to the ATK midfielder and he buries it into the top corner. What a way to score your first goal in the Hero Indian Super League!
12' SHOT Orlandi's curler from outside of the penalty box sails agonizingly above the crossbar. That's two shots from Orlandi and none of them has been on target.
9' SHOT Balwant is fed one-on-one, but Mailson Alves closes him out. Sanjiban positions himself perfectly to hold the ball.
7' CHANCE Raphael Augusto puts it on the platter for Orlandi, but his shot gazes the side netting. How did he miss that? I doubt Chennaiyin will get opportunities lke that again.
5' WASTED The resulting corner misses everyone and ATK have a throw in.
4' CORNER Thoi Singh wins a corner after Hitesh blocks his shot.
3' Jayesh Rane curls the ball from the right wing, but Mailson Alves heads it out.
1' KICKOFF... We are underway at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The home side are wearing blue, whereas, ATK are donning their traditional red and whites.
It's the National Anthem time as both the teams come out from the tunnel.
The most important question heading up to the game. Can Jeje break his goalscoring jinx? Jeje is an instrumental part of the Indian national team as well. He MUST find his scoring boots so that India can have a respectable campaign at the quadrennial extravaganza.

John Gregory has made no changes to the Chennaiyin FC side that drew 0-0 with Kerala Blasters.

His counterpart, Steve Coppell has made two changes to the side that held the mighty FC Goa with the similar scoreline. Pronay Halder makes his way for El Maimouni Noussair in the defensive midfield role owing to a suspension. To ensure that there are only five foreigners in the field, Everton Santos has been sacrificed. Balwant Singh finds his way to the starting line-up as a result.
According to the formation we have received, Chennaiyin are fielding themselves in a 5-3-2 formation with Orlandi partnering Jeje up front.
The ATK manager Steve Coppell employed his men in a 4-5-1 formation with Balwant Singh donning the role of the lone striker.

Interesting. If the game pans out like that, ATK are bound to have the advantage in the midfield as they have two extra men deployed.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Abhishek Kundu from Sportskeeda. I will be accompanying you throughout the game between Chennaiyin FC and ATK.
The encounter will be contested at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. The lineups should be out in any moment.
This is a virtual must-win match for ATK if they want to make it to the semis. After this encounter, they will be facing Northeast United and Bengaluru away from home. In both the cases, they are the favorites to drop points as their oppositions are ranked higher than them.

Chennaiyin FC, too, need this win if they want to stay in contention for the semis mathematically. After this match, they will face Mumbai City FC away from home and Delhi Dynamos on home. They can again collect the maximum points from those games before heading into the Christmas break.
ATK manager Steve Coppell is concerned regarding the poor form of his strikers. Since the late goal by Gerson Viera against FC Pune City, they have failed to find the back of the net. Furthermore, Kalu Uche and Alfaro's injury has made the matter worse for the away side.

"Yes, it does concern me (not scoring enough). We need to score more goals to win more games and get more points. It’s a simple equation. One thing I would say is that we have lost two very strong centre forwards through injury. Kalu Uche and then Alfaro, who never kicked the ball for us. He was injured in training. So, that’s bound to leave a gap but we are working very hard with the personnel we have to try and score. We have some very good players. I just hope that we can convert some of the chances that we create," lamented the ATK manager.

Can the ATK strikers end their draught tonight against Chennaiyin?
Chennaiyin FC manager John Gregory is quite wary of ATK's defense. He acknowledged the fact that scoring against them will be extremely difficult.

"Playing against Steve’s team is always tough. They are tough to play against. And since Bikey has come back into the team, they’ve become even stronger defensively. They are really a tough team to try and break down. Since Bikey has come in, I’m not so sure they’ve even conceded a goal. He’s added a little bit more strength to the defensive side of their game," he said.

Can the misfiring strikers of Chennaiyin breach the ATK defense?
Some worrying stats for ATK:

They are closer to the bottom of the league than to the top. There is a 10-point gap between ATK and Bengaluru while an 8-point gap between ATK and bottom-placed Delhi Dynamos.

ATK has scored only 7 goals so far (joint-lowest with Mumbai City FC) and amongst the forwards, only Balwant Singh has a goal to his name from the current roster. Furthermore, ATK has taken the least number of shots (77). They have also taken least shots from inside the box (34).
As a result, they have scored just 4 goals from inside the box which is again least in the league.

Jeje had 9 goals and 1 assist from 20 games to his name last season. Everton Santos and Balwant Singh are, too, having an abysmal striking form as they both scored 6 goals each last season. Everton is yet to open his account this season.
The last time these two sides had collided, ATK collected all the three points. At the Salt Lake stadium in Kolkata, Kalu Uche drew first blood for the home side after pouncing on a loose ball at the 3rd minute.
John Johnson further piled misery for Chennaiyin FC after heading home a dangerously curling free-kick from Manuel Lanzarote nine minutes later.
Chennaiyin FC did reduce the deficit at the 20th minute through Carlos Salom, but it proved to be a mere consolation as the final scoreline remained 2-1.
Some worrying stats for the Chennaiyin FC fans:

The three forwards- Carlos Salem, Jeje Lalpekhlua, and Mohammad Rafi- have combined to score only one goal so far this season. As a matter of fact, their defenders and midfielders have scored nine goals amongst them.

Chennaiyin FC has also conceded the most number of goals this season. They have let in 16 of the 34 shots on target, meaning almost one out of 2 goalbound shots have been converted by the oppositions.
Two key battles for the fans to watch out:

Raphael Augusto vs. Gerson Viera: Raphael Augusto has been the most lively player for Chennaiyin FC this season. If ATK can cancel out his threats in the midfield, they can see out this game as well. Gerson Viera will be shielding him in the absence of his partner-in-crime Pronay Halder who is out due to a suspension.

Thoi Singh vs. Ricky Lallawmama: Thoi Singh has 8 shots and 14 crosses from the 502 minutes he has played so far. Moreover, he has even scored 3 goals, the highest for any Chennaiyin FC player this season. Can Ricky Lallawmama contain him in the right wing?

ATK Predicted XI: Arindam Bhattacharja (GK), Andre Bikey, John Johnson, Ankit Mukherjee, Ricky Lallawmawma, Eugeneson Lyngdoh, Gerson Viera, Komal Thatal, Everton Santos, Balwant Singh, Eli Babalj

Chennaiyin FC Predicted XI: Karanjit Singh (GK), Jerry Lalrinzuala, Eli Sabia, Mailson Alves, Laldinliana Renthlei, Inigo Calderon, Isaac Vanmalsawma, Anirudh Thapa, Raphael Augusto, Thoi Singh, Carlos Salom

Predicted Scoreline: Chennaiyin 0-0 ATK
Chennaiyin FC vs ATK preview:

On paper, this is billed as the clash between the two two-time champions of the Indian Super League (ISL). In reality though, it will be a match hosted by a team struggling to defend its ISL title and another which is slowly making ground in its playoff race.

Chennaiyin FC and ATK, the only two teams to win the ISL, will battle it out for supremacy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai later this evening. However, considering that Chennaiyin have only recorded one win so far in the campaign, it's unlikely they will triumph over the defensively solid ATK.

There's no guarantee that ATK will bag the three points from this game either. They come into the game on the back of two consecutive draws and have not scored since Gerson Vieira's late winner against FC Pune City on November 10.

ATK's forward have not been able to find their feet quite well this season. The injury to Kalu Uche and his replacement Emiliano Alfaro has seen Eli Babalj shoulder the responsiblity of delivering the goals for Steve Coppell's side. Babalj played 28 minutes in ATK's recent 0-0 draw with FC Goa but could be handed a bigger role tonight. Pronay Halder is sure to miss the game due to a card suspension.

The defensive duo of Andre Bikey and John Johnson were able to contain the threat of FC Goa quite exceptionally in their previous game. Goa are the most attacking side in the ISL and considering that ATK held them goalless, managing Chennaiyin will not be an uphill task for their defence.

ATK have to be only wary of midfielder Raphael Augusto, who is fighting like a lone warrior Chennaiyin. Forward Carlos Salom has managed only one goal so far, while the other strikers Jeje Lalpekhlua and Mohammad Rafi are yet to open their account in the league.

Like ATK, Chennaiyin FC also come off a 0-0 draw with Kerala Blasters. Another attacker, Thoi Singh, had his chances against Kerala but failed to capitalise on them. Thoi will be looking to regain his mojo when he takes the pitch at the Marina Arena tonight.

A win for ATK will see them move up the standings to fifth on 15 points, the same as fourth-placed Jamshedpur FC. A draw will not make any change to their standing on the table.

Chennaiyin, on the other hand, have just five points and definitely need the full three points to salvage their season. The win will not improve their standing on the table just yet, but a draw or a defeat will more or less kill their hopes of making the playoffs.
