COS vs SER Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
Costa Rica
0 - 1
56' A. Kolarov
97' PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! Full time. That's it. Serbia might be lucky to get away with it. Kolarov with the goal that's fit to win any game. A spectacular freekick wins the game for Serbia against a Costa Rican side who could muster nothing of note going forward.

Costa Rica 0-1 Serbia

That's that from the yap centre. Hope y'all had a ball. This is me, Shambhu Ajith, signing off.

96' The ref is checking the video for a review of what Prijovic did to Calvo. Gets a yellow card for palming him in the face.
95' OH Lord! Gamboa digs out a cross from nothing and Ruiz gets to have a go at goal but it is blocked and the ball falls Bolanos who misses with only Stojkovic in front of him, from 6 yards out. He has been flagged offside though. But how could he miss from there anyway?!
94' There is VAR review for a possible red card for Matic in that accident. And no, there won't be. It has been decided.
93' Matic gets into a tussle with the Costa Rican coaching team after a member from their staff takes the ball that went out of play into his hands and refused to hand it back to Matic.
92' Ruiz plays an early ball to the far post for Campbell but Kolarov gets to it first and heads it out for a corner. Bolanos takes the corner and it is cleared out of danger and Tosic breaks on the counter in a on 1 situation. But Tosic can't play it across as his foot gets stuck underneath and sends it straight into the hands of Navas.
90' 5 minutes added on and Costa Rica have a freekick 40 yards away from goal on the right side. The ball is hoofed into the area but it is headed clear. Gamboa goes for goal from 30 yards out but it's a tame shot and it rolls into the safe hands of Stojkovic.
89' Savic with yet another excellent piece of play as he dances past a player and slides it across the edge of the area for Tosic. Tosic goes for glory but ends up sending the ball into orbit.
88' Substitution for Serbia.

Mitrovic off. Prijovic on.
86' Savic slaloms past the Costa Rican midfield and threads in a beautiful ball for Mitrovic and the striker is one-on-one with Navas but Gonzalez dives in and brings Mitrovic but the referee says get up. Replays show that there was no contact. Mitro should have finished that off.
84' Kolarov pumps a long ball into the area for Mitrovic and he nearly gets to it before he is flagged offside by the assistant.
82' Borges plays a handsome diagonal ball for Bolanos on the right flank and he brings it down with his chest and lays it off to Gamboa but the Costa Ricans once again fail to put something together in the final third as they pass the ball out of the danger zones and eventually relinquish possession.
81' Substitution for Serbia.

Tadic walks off to an ovation and Rukavina takes his place.
80' Savic tries to pick the perfect pass for Tadic who is hotfooting it into the box but Gonzalez turns around kicks the ball clear.
79' Campbell takes a little too much time to release the ball after getting the beating of Kolarov and Tosic. Tosic recovers and wins the ball back and clears the danger.
78' Colindres dribbles past Ivanovic and whips in a cross but he can't find a teammate and that's that.
76' In fact, replays have shown that Navas got his fingertips to the ball and diverted it from its path which didn't help Kostic in the very least.
75' WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY TO GO 2-0 UP FOR THE SERBS! Kostic gets the ball played to him on a plate by Tadic and it falls for him after beating Navas at the near post but he just couldn't sidefoot it home. That could have been 2-0. Should have been 2-0.
75' Sergej Milinkovic Savic goes for goal from 25 yards out after the Serbs put together an exhibition of quick passing play. But he sends it to space probing for the 10th planet!
74' Ruiz tries to spread the play out into the wings from the centre of the park with an outside foot pass but there's no one there and the ball rolls out of relevance much to the dismay of the Costa Rican fans.
72' Bolanos gets a lucky deflection and the ball falls for Campbell who darts into the area but Tosic steps in to deny him the space to have a shot and the ball goes out for a corner. Nothing comes from it though.
Substitution for Costa RIca.

Colandres on. Guzman off.
71' Bolanos feigns and Campbell waits on the defender thereby disrupting the Serbian defence. But his ball does not fall for any Costa Rican and the danger is quelled.
70' Joel Campbell is thrown to the ground by Milenkovic. Costa Rica have a freekick 35 yards out, near the left flank.
69' Substitution for Serbia.

Ljajic off. Kostic on.
67' Campbell, trying to show off some skills down near the right side of the box, loses the ball rather cheaply.
66' Substitution for Costa Rica.

Joel Campbell in. Urena off.
65' Ivanovic swings another ball into the box and Savic is there but he just can't get a proper contact on the ball.
64' Borges lobs the ball towards Urena in the area but Milenkovic heads the ball out danger.
63' Duarte galops into the final third and slides it to Bolanos whose cross is below par and the attack is foiled.
62' Costa Rica are playing higher up the pitch ever since that goal went in. They have tweaked their tactics evidently and it has got them more control over the proceedings.
60' Bolanos plays yet another cross into the area but Stojkovic gathers the ball before Urena can get to it.
59' Costa Rica have a freekick from the left flank. It's played in deep and Savic heads it out of the 6 yard box but its not really away but Matic gets it and escapes with it and thwarts the danger.
Substitution for Costa Rica.

Bolanos on. Venegas.
58' Ivanovic gets a yellow card for an ugly challenge on Venegas.
58' Tadic swivels past Calvo and another Costa Rican before cutting in and lobs it for Mitrovic inside the area but it's a tad bit ahead of him than he would have wanted and that attack comes to zilch.
57' It's game on now. Can Costa Rica come back?
55' Kolarov stands by the ball and it is very much within his range.
55' Guzman labours his way to a yellow card after engaging Mitrovic with some incessant clawing from behind.
53' It's a promising set-piece and Mitrovic was in again but Duarte has him checked with all limbs available and doesn't let the Serb get a proper contact on the ball.
53' Kolarov puts in a lovely cross to the far post from the left wing and it falls a little beyond Mitrovic and Calvo heads it out for a corner and puts out the fire. For now.
51' Savic once again tries to play Mitrovic into the area but Gamboa intervenes to put the kibosh on that Serbian attack.
49' MITROVIC MISSES A ONE-ON-ONE. Mitrovic receives a long ball on his chest and plays a lovely little give and go with Savic and receives the return ball inside the box and is one-on-one with Navas but the Real Madrid guardian gets down to his left and palms the ball away for a corner. The corner comes to nothing though.
49' Kolarov intercepts the ball and plays a lovely exchange with Savic and though they lose the ball they regain the ball and spreads the play out onto the right wing. However, they're forced to go back to defence and play their way out once again.
47' Guzman is clattered into by Savic near the halfway line and the Costa Rican goes down in pain.
46' Calvo throws it to Ruiz but the Serbians power it away towards Mitrovic and queers his pitch.
45' Ruiz makes progress down the left flank after cutting past 2 players and Costa Rica have a throw-in near the corner flag.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! And we're off in the second half. The game remains deadlocked and both sides are back on the field without making any changes. Can the second half offer something different? Let's hope it does.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! That's that in the first half. Costa Rica 0-0 Serbia. Let's hope the match springs to life in the second.
46' 2 minutes added on. Milinkovic gives the ball away in the centre and Guzman plays Urena in on the left side of the box. Tosic wins the ball back from him but is fouled on his way out of the box.
45' That comes to nothing. Yet another case of an overpowered long ball.
44' It's not really been one of the most entertaining first half we've seen over three days. Let's see if the match can spring to life. Meanwhile Matic is undressed from behind by a clawing Borges and Serbia have a freekick.
42' Savic with a spectacular attempt! Ivanovic shifts the ball inwards to Milivojevic who floats the ball into the box. Savic goes for goal with an overhead kick but Navas dives and stops it. Savic is flagged offside but the replays suggest otherwise.
41' Duarte, Guzman and Calvo move forward with a triangular passing move and Calvo gets a chance to go at goal from right outside the box. It is not on target however and goes out for a goalkick.
39' Mitrovic heads the corner clear and Serbia can launch an attack of their own now.
39' Costa Rica have a corner after Ivanovic throws himself at a Calvo cross.
37' Finally Costa Rica with some possession. Borges and Ruiz play a quick exchange but lost the ball but hey recover the ball soon enough and Urena cuts past Tosic and gets a shot away from right outside the box with his left foot. It sails into row Z though.
35' Tosic and Acosta engage each other in an aerial duel and the latter comes off worse after receiving an elbow to the side of his head. The medical staff are out on the field.
35' Kolarov's ball is dangerous but Navas dives and gets his fist to it and clears the danger.
34' Tadic shepherds the ball out of a blind alley and around Gamboa. The latter then claws him to the ground to afford Serbia a freekick near the right corner flag. Kolarov will take it.
33' It's been quite a while since Costa Rica has created anything of note. At the moment, it is all Serbia.
31' Ivanovic darts into the attacking half and plays an early ball but it sails past the touchline and out of the ground.
30' Serbia are now seeing a lot of the ball and they once again play it out to Tadic on the right flank. He combines with Savic who makes a run into the box and keeps a hold of the ball before flicking it back to Tadic. However, he loses the ball after deciding to cut in. Just cross it with your right foot once, Dusan!
28' Tadic plays yet another ball into the box but Gamboa heads it clear before Mitrovic can get to it.
27' Kolarov plays a delightful dinked ball into the box and Savic works his stumps and gets to the end of it ahead of the Costa Ricans but can only let fly a weak shot and Navas saves.

Oh, it wouldn't have counted. He was offside.
26' Milivojevic plays a delightful ball through the lines which is received by Tadic in the centre. He then threads it ito the path of Mitrovic who cuts it back. Unfortunately, no one's there and Costa Rica clear the danger. But the ball is send back into the box by Matic and Mitrovic brings it down with a delightful touch but Calvo intervenes just in time before Mitro gets his shot away.
23' Tadic, once again, making Serbia tick from the right flank. He plays a neat little ball to the touchline where Savic receives it and lobs it but he gets a bit too much behind it and the ball floats over the far post and out of danger.
21' Costa Rica break on the counter but Calvo loses the ball and blatters into Tadic and earns a yellow card.
21' Tadic tries to be creative but on the right flank but plays a ball to a ghost on the right wing and affords Costa Rica a chance to break on the counter.
19' Tadic wins the ball back on the right wing and crosses it in but the Costa Rican defenders see the ball out of danger.
18' Tadic tosses it into the centre and Tosic lobs it back into the middle of the box but Mitrovic can't connect with it and that comes to nothing.
17' Milivojevic is fouled by Guzman, 45 yards away from goal and Serbia have a freekick. They'll take it long and Tadic is standing by the ball.
15' Savic's doggedness helps create space for Ivanovic on the right wing. The wingback swings one to the far post but Mitrovic can't quite get a a good contact on the ball.
14' Ivanovic cuts inside from the right flank and drives one into the 6 yard box. He has the beating of Navas but the ball drops to nobody and that attack bites the dust.
13' Matic plays a wasteful chance and Ruiz latches on to it and the master plays a near perfect threaded ball through the centre for Urena but Milenkovic has him at an arm's length and snuffs out the danger with some rookie wrestling moves.
12' Milinkovic-Savic darts down the right flank and swipes the ball across to Aleksandar Mitrovic who takes one touch and goes for glory from right outside the area. But his shot is deflected and ends up being an easy catch for Keylor Navas.
11' OH GONZALEZ! Big chance goes begging. Venegas takes it short and gets the ball back and plays a wonderful ball to the far post where Gonzalez only needs to nod it in and he misses from 3 yards out! What a miss!
10' Venegas wins a corner by repeating the exact same tropes.
9' Costa Rica are enjoying some possession now and Venegas receives the ball on the left flank. He runs the ball into Ivanovic who has been a wall so far and gets a throw-in near the corner flag.
7' Acosta wins the ball and feeds Urena in the centre. He then slides it across to the left flank for Venegas. Venegas runs back around and tries to whip one in but makes awkward contact with the ball and sends it out for a goalkick.
6' Serbians have taken the pace off the game and are trying to settle down and get comfortable. Well, at least it looked that way until Savic and plays a ball into Kolarov on the right flank and the ex Cityzen whips an early ball into the danger area. But nobody anticipated that and the ball eventually goes out for a goalkick.
4' Ljajic plays it in and it falls to no man and it runs far out. Kolarov clunks Borges to the ground and the Costa Ricans have a freekick in their own half.
3' Tadic with his trickery on the right wing, near the corner flag, wins a corner for the Serbs.
2' Ruiz plays Urena through the centre and into the box but Stojkovic comes out and corners him and blocks the ball and it goes out for a corner. Nothing comes from the set-piece directly but Costa Rica keep the ball. Calvo whips in a beauty from the left flank and Gonzalez gets on the end of it. It has pace and is on target but is hit straight at Stojkovic. Could have been a real summin.
1' Ljajic takes the corner and Mitrovic can't quite get a proper connection on it and Kavas gathers it without any hassle.
1' Costa Rica have a corner after Mitrovic was found inside the area with a brilliant ball from Ivanovic.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! And we're off. Serbia will attack from left to right on the tv screen. So you can guess which way Costa Rica are going to go.
We're minutes away from kickoff at the Samara Arena. Group E gets up and running with the mighty Serbs are taking on a formidable Costa Rican side. Serbia have a team that has as much experience as it has the vigor of youth. Costa Rica is led by the veteran Bryan Ruiz. Keylor Navas, the hattrick Champions League winner, is perhaps the most recognizable name in the lineup to the layman.

The teams are heading out of the tunnel. The Costa Ricans are wearing their Red and Blue kit while the Serbs are in Whites. Can Serbia flip the script on their customary World Cup mediocrity? Can Costa Rica prove that they embody all the swagger you'd expect from an American nation (save the US of A).

The pre-match pleasantries will get over in a couple of minutes or so and after that, we'll kickoff. This World Cup has been nothing short of phenomenal so far and we expect it to kick on in the same vein.

Costa Rica vs Serbia: Team News

Costa Rica and Serbia are no short of talent and they could really give Switzerland and Brazil a run for their money when it comes to making out of the group.

As for Costa Rica, Keylor Navas will be guarding the sticks. Kenner Gutierrez has replaced Ronald Mataritta who will miss out on the entire tournament due to a hamstring problem.

For the Premier League fans, it will be interesting to see whether out of favour Arsenal striker Joel Campbell will play for the North Americans after he failed to nail down a starting spot at Emirates.

Serbia will be looking to Aleksandar Mitrovic to take charge upfront. The striker has been in scintillating form for both club and country. The striker, who scored 12 goals in 20 games for Fulham while on loan thereby helping them to secure Premier League promotion has also scored 14 goals in his last 18 games for Serbia.

Former Premier League stars like Kolarov and Branislav Ivanovic are expected to be part of the defence. Serbia have quite a strong midfield. Nemanja Matic, Milivojevic, Milinkovic-Savic and Tadic are top quality midfielders and that's the reason why Serbia have the edge in this encounter.

Costa Rica vs Serbia: Probable lineups

Costa Rica: Keylor Navas, Oscar Duarte, Giancarlo Gonzalez, Michael Umana, Cristian Gamboa, Celso Borges, Yeltsin Tejeda, Diaz, Bryan Ruiz, Christian Bolanos, Joel Campbell

Serbia: Vladimir Stojkovic, Antonio Rukavina, Branislav Ivanovic, Matija Nastasic, Aleksandar Kolarov, Nemanja Matic, Luka Milivojevic, Dusan Tadic, Adam Ljajic, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Aleksandar Mitrovic

Costa Rica vs Serbia: Form guide

Costa Rica: W-L-W-L-L

Costa Rica, in their last 5 games made quick work of Scotland and Northern Ireland- both teams that haven't qualified. But what ought to worry them is the fact that they weren't able to beat the other teams that have qualified for the tournament. They lost to Tunisia, England and Belgium over the course of the last couple of months.

Serbia: W-L-W-L-W

After rounding up Georgia 1-0, Serbia lost to Morocco 0-2. They were able to beat to Nigeria convincingly but they lost to Chile, who haven't qualified, right after that. They finished the friendlies with a convincing win over Bolivia whom they thrashed 5-1.

Costa Rica vs Serbia: Head to Head

They've never played against each other, mate. Never. We're witnessing history tonight. (Is that overselling it?)

Costa Rica vs Serbia: Key Players

Mitrovic, Milinkovic-Savic and Nemanja Matic are all key to Serbia's cause. Mitrovic's fine form in front of goal and Savic's and Matic's excellent reading of the game and ability to rule the midfield will be crucial to Serbia tonight.

As for Costa Rica, Keylor Navas is still the biggest player to be strutting his stuff for the North Americans.

Costa Rica vs Serbia: Prediction

Predicted scoreline: Costa Rica 1-2 Serbia

Expect another cracker of a match in this already exhilarating World Cup.
