Argentina
A. Griezmann (P) 13'
B. Pavard 57'
K. Mbappé 64'
K. Mbappé 68'
41' Á. Di María
48' G. Mercado
90'+3' S. Agüero
I'm still catching my breath after that mind-blowing second half. France took an early lead from the spot, but Argentina hit back through Di Maria and then Mercado. That sparked France into life who struck thrice in 10 minutes. Aguero's late late goal set the cat amongst the pigeons but France just about managed to hold on to book a berth in the quarters where they will face either Uruguay or Portugal.

That's it from me. Join us in an hour for live coverage of Portugal v Uruguay.
Peeeeep peeeeeep. The ref blows the whistle and ARGENTINA ARE OUT. LIONEL MESSI IS OUT. What a finish to the game.
95' WHAT A CHANCE FOR ARGENTINA. Aguero finds some space on the edge of the box and tries to smack one towards goal but it deflects over the crossbar.
94' Otamendi with a horrific challenge on Paul Pogba and he is carded. Tempers boiling over now
92' Agueroooooooo. This game is not over. Lionel Messi dinks a beautiful ball into the far post and Aguero rises to power it into the net. Argentina need one more and France are under the cosh.
91' 4 minutes to be added on. 4 minutes for Argentina to save their World Cup campaign
90' Argentina refusing to lie down. Di Maria decides to take matters into his own hands and sprints down the right but his cross is well blocked.
89' No hattrick for Mbappe but he's done his job brilliantly. Thauvin the man to replace him
88' Penalty shout for Argentina. Otamendi takes a tumble, but replays show it was Fazio who shoved him to the ground. Oh Argentina are unravelling
88' Argentina throwing everything they've got at France. Freekick now in a decent position but the delivery is poor and danger is averted
87' Messi has come alive. Plays a lovely ball in behind the defence to Aguero but his shot is brilliantly blocked
86' OH LIONEL MESSI! Runs at the heart of the French defence, cuts inside and sends two defenders sprawling, however, he cannot get enough on his shot to trouble Lloris
85' Half chance for Argentina. Meza finds himself through on goal after a mistake from Pavard but he makes a meal of things and the chance is wasted
83' Nabil Fekir replaces Griezmann who walks off to thunderous applause from the French faithful. What a game he has had
83' Stat attack: Every single shot on target has resulted in a goal
82' Messi again tries to find some space to weave his magic but Kante snaps at his heels almost immediately. Messi has been completely neautralized tonight
82' Just as I say that, Messi jigs past Varane and finds Meza on the right. His shot is easily blocked and lands safely in Lloris' hands
80' Argentina look absolutely shellshocked at the moment. Their passing is awry, they seem fatigued and Messi has disappered
76' Oh Mascherano you lucky lucky man. Pavard jogs past him with absurd ease and has his heels clipped. Mascherano is already on a yellow but the ref decides to be lenient this time around
74' Last throw of the dice for Argentina. Meza replaces Pavon while for France Tolisso comes on for Matuidi
73' Pavard goes into the ref's book now.
72' With that goal, Mbappe joins elite company. He becomes the first teenager to score twice in a World Cup match since Pele
70' Sidenetting. Lovely stuff from France again and Griezmann this time finds Giroud in acres of space on the left. He unleashes one at goal but it smashes into the sidenetting
68' GOAAAALLLLL. OHHHH KYLIANNN MBAPPPE DOES IT AGAIN. What a move from France. It all starts from Lloris who plays it to Umtiti. Umtiti finds Pogba in the middle who feeds it to Griezmann who lays it off to Giroud. Giroud plays Mbappe through on goal and he places one into the bottom corner. Henry-esque that. France have rocked Argentina with three goals in 10 minutes
66' Sampaoli has had enough. Perez trots off and Aguero takes his place. What a turnaround this has been. 2 goals in 6 minutes
64' KYLIAN MBAPPEEEEEE. FRANCE TAKE THE LEAD. WHAT A GAME. Pogba plays a sumptuous ball out to the left to Hernandez. His cross finds Mbappe in the middle. His first time shot is well blocked but he gets the rebound, dances past the challenge of Fazio and lashes one into the back of the net, under the despairing dive of Armani
62' I'm still catching my breath after that piece of magic from Pavard. Argentina looking to hit back immediately, but an aimless ball over the top and the move breaks down
60' What a game this is turning out to be. And we still have 30 minutes to play
56' GOAAAAALLL. PAVARDDDD. OH MY LORD. FRANCE EQUALISE. An innocuos ball is delivered into the box from the left and cleared away but only to Pavard prowling on the edge of the box. He lines it up and smashes an absolute screamer first time into the top corner. Unbelievable finish from the right back. Where did he pull that out of? What a way to score your first international goal
54' Freekick for France in a great position. Mbappe delivers a wicked ball into the box but Fazio rises brilliantly to head it away.
52' What can France produce now? They looked in complete command for 40 minutes and have let things slip. The Argentine fans are singing their hearts out and why not? They were 10 minutes away from exiting the World Cup and are now on course to making the quarterfinals
50' OUCH. A horribly late challenge from Banega on Mbappe and he is the latest man to be cautioned
47' GOAAAAAAL. MERCADOOOO. ARGENTINA LEAD. Banega whips the freekick in and it falls to Messi on the edge of the box. Messi curls one towards the far corner and it deflects off Mercado's right boot and into the back of the net. Unbelievable scenes
46' Di Maria sends Pavard back to Paris with a lovely nutmeg. Pavard grabs a fistful of his shirt and brings him down on the edge of the box. Freekick for Argentina in a promising position.
Half-time substitution. Fazio replaces Rojo
We are back for the second half. Argentina looked dead and buried until that Di Maria strike and they now ave their tails up. Can they make it count?
47' Peeeeep. The ref brings an end to an entertaining first period. France took the lead courtesy a Griezmann penalty but a DI Maria wonderstrike drew Argentina level. Plenty to play for in the second half. Join us in 10.
45' 2 minutes of added time to what has been a scintillating first half
45' Pogba is at it again. Picks it up near the halfway line and WALKS at the heart of the Argentina midfield, holding off Mascherano and Banega simultaneously
44' Mascherano too goes into the ref's book for a poor challenge on Kante. He will miss Argentina's next game, if they do make it that far
41' GOAAAALLLLL. DI MARIAAA WHAT A STRIKE. He has been invisible all this while, but what a way to announce his arrival
Di Maria picks it up around 30 yards from goal, moves it to his left, and fires a piledriver into the top corner as Lloris looks on bewildered. What a hit to get Argentina level
40' Flashes wide. End to end stuff here. Pavard finds space on the right and whips one into the box, Giroud towers over his marker, but cannot get on the end of it
37' Great play by Argentina, even better defending by Pavard. Messi with a perfectly weighted pass on the byline and Pavon races onto it before cutting it back towards goal but Pavard gets in the way
36' Messi goes down in the box, no penalty. The ref looks the other way. Lovely build up play on the edge of the French box and it eventually comes out to Di Maria on the left. He plays Messi in behind the defence who goes down under pressure from a couple of French defenders.
34' Let the bodies hit the floor. Otamendi and Giroud clash as they challenge for the same ball and both hit the ground in pain
33' Griezmann, you're better than that. Another France counter and again it's 2 v 2. However, Giroud pushes off to the left while Griezmann plays it in the other direction and the move breaks down
31' Ahh Mbappe overdoes it. France with a rapid counter and Pogba feeds Mbappe on the right. He cuts in and then out again, but is stopped in his tracks by Tagliafico. That's his inexperience showing
30' Sampaoli is pacing up and down the touchline in angst. He's not happy with what he's seeing at the moment. Argentina have had a lot of the ball but haven't troubled Lloris one bit
28' Penalty shout for Argentina. Mercado tries to whip one in, and it deflects off Umtiti's hand and out of play. No penalty there though, his hand was right against his chest.
26' Chance for France. Pogba with a sumptuous ball yet again into Griezmann's path. He dances past the challenge of Tagliafico who tugs at his shirt. Griezmann stays on his feet and tries to square it to Giroud but Armani gets in the way and claims
23' Umtiti goes down like he's been shot. He's holding his face and writhing in pain, but gets up once France regain possession. Oooh Umtiti.
19' OOOH Kante he's everywhere. Runs a whole breadth of the pitch to intercept the ball out by Armani. Argentina have no idea what's hit them
18' Ever Banega decides to try his luck from range but it's deflected out for a corner which Banega himself will take
17' AHHH Pogba. Steps up and fires one into the third tier. Poor effort
16' Tagliafico is carded for that challenge. Can France take a 2-0 lead? Pogba and Griezmann lining it up
16' Is that another penalty for France? No the contact is just outside. An absolute peach of a ball from Pogba over the top and into Mbappe's path who sets off on goal yet again. Again he is brought down, this time by Tagliafico about 6 inches outside the box
15' Poor stuff from Pavard. Cross field ball played by Mercado, Di Maria knocks it down towards Perez. The ball looks like it's going out of play but Pavard gets an inadvertent touch on it and Argentina have a corner
14' Rojo was carded for that challenge and he will miss Argentina's next game. Oh how things can change.
14' OH MY WORD. I still cannot get past that Mbappe run. He ghosted past challenge after challenge and didn't even seem to be in top gear
12' GOOOALLLL. Griezmann converts with ease. Gives the keeper the eyes and smashes it straight down the middle. France lead. What a start to the game.
10' PENALTY TO FRANCE. Mbappe receives the ball deep into his own half and absolutely flies past the Argentine defence. He beats four defenders and is through on goal and Rojo hauls him down in the box
9' France have gotten off to the much brighter start. Mbappe in particular looks threatening on the break and Argentina cannot play too high a line
8' GRIEZMANNNN. OFF THE BAR. Stunning freekick from Griezmann as he lifts it over the wall but it clatters off the upright even as Armani remains rooted to the spot
7' Mbappe you beauty. Receives the ball in Argentina territory and accelerates past two defenders. Mascherano takes him down from behind cynically and France have a freekick in a great position
6' Ohhh Kylian. Mbappe dances past Tagliafico with absurd ease but runs it out of play. Warning signs for Argentina
5' Lovely stuff from Banega. Plays a lovely defence-splitting pass into the path of Di Maria, but his cross is beyond the head of any of his teammates
4' Chaos in the French box. Banega whips the freekick in and it ping pongs off a couple of bodies and Kante clears
4' Dirty stuff. Messi is absolutely cleaned up by Matuidi and Argentina have a freekick in a promising position
3' Messi has Kante marking him. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy
2' Mbappe gets an early taste of the action, drops deep to receive a pass from Pogba, dances past an Argentine tackle and feeds Pogba again, but his pass is hit out of play
1' OUCH! Tagliafico is bundled to the ground by Giroud right from kickoff and he gets himself up gingerly
We are ready for kickoff. The anthems and other formalities are done. It's time. France get us underway, kicking from left to right
What did the managers say?

Jorge Sampaoli: "We are going to play against a team with great individual players," Sampaoli said. "They are among the very best contenders and we will need to be very consistent to come out on top of a very difficult match."

Didier Deschamps: “Messi is Messi. We’d like to mark and neutralise him but we know very well he can make the difference with very little. We have to take that into account.”
France vs Argentina - Match Preview

It's finally time. After sleepwalking through the group stages, Argentina need to awaken from their slumber when they take on Didier Deschamps' France who have endured similar attacking struggles in their three matches. Two attacks boasting stars like Griezmann, Mbappe, Dembele, Giroud, Pogba, Di Maria, Messi, Aguero and Higuain amongst others have amassed a woeful total of six goals thus far.

For Argentina, it seems like they are destined to be here though. With the spotlight on Messi, it was Marcos Rojo who proved to be the unlikeliest of heroes against Nigeria, snatching a late winner to sink African hearts.

France meanwhile looked unconvincing if solid in their matches against Australia, Peru and Denmark but they are up against a whole different beast tonight. Will the likes of Pavard and Hernandez be able to deal with the Messi-Di Maria threat? Only time will tell.

Whichever way this goes, it promises to be an absolute treat. So sit back and enjoy

France vs Argentina: Team News

"Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends. I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends." One would be forgiven for thinking it was indeed Mr. Lionel Messi and not the great Paul McCartney that conjured these words. Messi has steered the Argentine ship for oh so many years and he finally got a little help from his friend, more specifically Marcos Rojo - whose late winner helped La Albiceleste sneak past Nigeria, booking a R16 clash against France.

Messi will need that help and a lot more against Didier Deschamps' men. After a disappointing game against Nigeria, Gonzalo Higuain could make way for Sergio Aguero. Di Maria was shocking, to put it lightly, in his side's previous game but he is expected to keep his place ahead of Meza and Pavon.

For France, meanwhile, it is clear Deschamps has no idea what his best XI looks like. The attacking riches in the form of Griezmann, Dembele, Mbappe and Giroud have not yielded dividends so far, but the manager is unlikely to hand Lemar a start in a such a crucial game. Giroud should spearhead the attack with Griezmann and Mbappe flanking him.

Sidibe did not offer much against Denmark but then again no one did so why should he be punished? He too is expected to start ahead of Pavard. Benjamin Mendy is France's only injury concern and he will sit out the game against Argentina.

France vs Argentina: Probable lineups

France Probable XI: Lloris; Sidibe, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Kante, Matuidi; Mbappe, Pogba, Griezmann; Giroud
Argentina Probable XI: Armani; Mercado, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico; Mascherano, Banega, Perez; Di Maria, Aguero, Messi

France vs Argentina: Form Guide (Most Recent First)

France: D-W-W-D-W
Argentina: W-L-D-W-L

France are unbeaten in their last seven, dating back to March when they let a two-goal lead against Colombia slip. They cannot afford to be anywhere near as complacent as that when they take on Jorge Sampaoli's side.

Argentina, meanwhile, just about sneaked through to the R16 after an underwhelming group stage performance, relying on absolute magic from Marcos Rojo to earn progression.

France vs Argentina: Head to Head

Matches: 11
France wins: 2
Argentina wins: 6
Draws: 3

This will be the 12th meeting between the two sides and Argentina have dominated their encounters so far, winning on 6 occasions. They have managed to keep a solid 8 clean sheets in the process and also won both World Cup encounters between the two teams. All this points to the fact that France have quite a task on their hands.

Most recent meeting: France 0-2 Argentina

France vs Argentina: Prediction

Predicted scoreline: France 1-2 Argentina

Both teams looked off color in the group stages, both teams' star players sleepwalked through the most part of 3 matches, but I think in crunch time, you can never bet against Lionel Messi. France definitely have the more well-rounded team, but is that enough to stop the individual brilliance of Messi? I certainly don't think so.

Both teams struggled to hit the back of the net in the group games, but I think this match will be quite free-flowing with a bunch of chances and it will come down to who takes them on the night. 2-1 Argentina for me and Messi to score the winner - cuz why not?
