GER vs MEX Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
Germany
0 - 1
FT
Mexico
35' H. Lozano
Mexico deserved it, ladies and gentlemen. Germany tried in the second half, something you can accuse them of not doing in the first half. Mexico should have scored more, really, but the 1-0 scoreline kept things a lot more interesting right until the end. Ochoa wasn't really troubled.

The Germans need to take a long hard look at themselves, and Joachim Low especially. The first half was a shambolic performance and they can't afford to mess around in the coming weeks. Two out of two is a must now.

Wow, what a game! We've got another big game coming up as the Samba boys are in action. You can follow Anirudh Menon's live blog for the thrills and spills, lads and lasses.

This is Amit Mishra signing off! It was a pleasure bringing the game live to you. A little bit of Schadenfreude if you're not a German fans, huh? See you when I see you!
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! FULLTIME! The World Champions have been beaten! Mexico are there! What a game!
90+3' Ochoa collects safely! Mexico are nearly there!
90+3' Corner for Germany!
90+2' Germany play it well, patiently, even this late on, but Muller's pass isn't picked up by anyone and Ochoa collects it! One last chance for the Germans as they push on...
Three minutes have been added on...
90' Yellow card for Herrera for time wasting.
89' BRANDT! WOW! First sets up a nice chance for Gomez after easing past Salcedo. Mexico get the block in but the second ball is struck to the bar by Brandt again! Ever so close!
88' GOMEZ! BIG CHANCE! It was easier to score than miss! Brilliant cross by Kimmich from the right and it took out Ayala. Gomez was in behind both the defenders, but his header is way over the bar!
87' Substitution for Germany

Werner is OFF
Brandt is ON
86' Werner gets the ball and just doesn't know what to do with it! Looks like is he coming off as the Germans push for a late leveler...
85' Yellow card shown to Hummels for a rash tackle on Jimenez.
84' Chance for German as Mexico give it away in midfield but Reus' pass is just overhit and pushes Werner wide. They salvage it as Kroos takes a shot, but it's saved by Ochoa!
83' Yellow card to Muller for bringing down Herrera. Tactical foul, that...
82' LAYUN! ANOTHER CHANCE! Had the chance, skies it again! Jeez, this should have been over a long time back and the Germans are still in it! 3v1, 4v1, 5v1! How many chance do they need to seal it?!?!
81' Jimenez! SO LOUSY! There was a 3v1 there and he had to pick a simple pass! Layun made a good run, but the former's pass comes off the heel of Hummels! Germany get away with one!
80' Substitution for Germany

Plattenhardt is OFF
Gomez is ON
79' Half a chance for the Germans as Plattenhardt's cross was aimed at Reus. Mexico win it well, and also get a freekick at the middle to reprieve some of the pressure.
78' MEXICO BREAK from their own half, all from the German move, and Layun just isn't able to gather his wits about him! Hummels did well to put the pressure on him. The shot was way over the bar...
77' Great defending from Herrera to deny Draxler the goal! The goal was gaping but Herrera threw his body and got the block! Incredible!
76' Kroos with a shot! Just wide! In fairness, Ochoa had it covered. Good play by Kimmich to pick Kroos at the edge of the box there...
75' Boateng does well to win loose ball in midfield and picks another good pass for Reus, but he isn't able to control it. Appeals for a handball are turned down by the ref...
73' Substitution for Mexico

Guardado is OFF
Rafa Marquez is ON for his fifth World Cup appearance! Only the third player to do so. What a legend of the game!
72' A brief stoppage here as Gallardo is receiving treatment...
71' Boateng's buccaneering run ends with a delicate little chip pass for Reus, but the latter's shot is way over the bar. Was a tough angle to score from, but Reus has just come on and you can't really blame him for going at it from there...
70' A bit of old WWF in the Germany box as Chicha and Hummels are at it. Chicha did well to get the better of Hummels on the foot race, but Hummels used his strengthen well to win the ball back...
69' Draxler tries a few stepovers, shifts the ball well but his cross is again blocked by the Mexico defence. Germany retrieve it and attack again...
68' A bit of hesitation by Ochoa results in a corner as Reus put the pressure on there. Needless, that...
67' Draxler with a shot! Deflected for a corner! Good cross by Muller from the right, but Draxler just couldn't get a clear sight of goal!
67' Substitution for Mexico

Lozano is OFF
Jiménez is ON
66' Werner makes inroads on the left but his attempted cross was blocked and it ricochets of his shin for a goalkick. The Leipzig man has had a very quiet evening so far...
65' Kimmich nearly does the unthinkable by scoring a bicycle kick! Good cross by Boateng, top try by Kimmich. What was he doing in the box there?!?!
64' Neuer comes out to make a good Guardado pass look terrible. The custodian is so quick off his line! Germany on the ball and are probing for an opening...
63' Top tackle by Gallardo on Reus as Mexico win the ball and break forward. Layun on the ball here, on the right...
62' Germany's transition play so far this half has been much better than in the first half. The area covered in the first half was atrocious, really...
61' Germany find half an opening as Draxler cuts in to get a shot away. It's well blocked by the Mexico defence. Kroos gets in on the rebound but his touch let's him down and El Tri get a goalkick.
60' Substitution for Germany

Khedira is OFF
Reus is ON
60' Marco Reus' time as come as he is preparing to come on. His first World Cup game!
59' Kimmich finds room on the right but his cross is just behind Muller and the Mexicans get it away. Germany win the second ball and are in possession...
58' Substitution for Mexico

Vela is OFF
Alvarez is ON
58' TOP SAVE BY OCHOA! But Muller, who took the shot, was offside! Good buildup play by the Germans though!
57' Germany are caught again at the back as Guardado and Chicha break in what was a 2v1 situation there! The latter's pass was terrible and the move comes to nothing!
56' Freekick to Germany as Lozano got more of the man, Kimmich, than the ball. Clumsy, really. He ain't no defender, lemme tell you...
56' A nicely floated pass by Kroos isn't good enough to test the Mexico defence as they deal with it fairly easily.
55' Timo Werner goes down at the edge of the box but it was a very soft. Ref waves it way, and rightly so. Germany get the ball forward again and Ozil's nice pass see's Draxler on the left. The PSG man's shot is blocked for a corner!
54' Possession for Germany in their own half until Boateng decides to get come out with it. But Mexico do well to win the ball back and move forward with the ball...
53' Kimmich with a wayward shot on goal. Sails over the bar. Again, brilliant defending from the Mexicans who were pretty sturdy at the back...
52' Brilliant block by Gallardo on Kimmich's cross for a throw in. Germany are probing, but the movement in the box is absent so far...
50' Oh, Kimmich finally decides to defend a it and gets back to put in a halt on Lozano's run. Can't afford to be as callous as the first half...
49' Supreme confidence from the Mexicans here as they pass the ball out from the back and get forward. So easy on the eye there. Out Germany-ing Germany...
48' The ball ping-pongs in midfield to Mexico's advantage, really. Feel like there might a change coming soon if the pattern doesn't change in the coming 10 odd minutes...
48' Plattenhardt tries an early long-range effort but it's straight at Ochoa! The Germans need to settle quickly and look for the leveler here...
47' Mexico manage to keep the ball in their own half. The positioning of those quality midfielders didn't matter in the first half as Mexico had so much pace! Will that change now?
46' And already, the pattern is kinda the same as Germany get forward, lose the ball and Mexico pump it long for Chicha who's control lets him down...
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeep! The second half is underway! Germany get us started, shooting from right to left!
An upset on the cards unless the Germans improve in the second half, and by a mile. Mexico have their number here. Those lightning quick counterattacks have totally caught them by surprise and Low needs to make the necessary changes. Germany haven't necessarily looked dangerous either, so perhaps time to bring on Reus?

It's going to be one hell of a second half and maybe a night to remember for the Mexicans. Stick around, fellas!
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Half time!
One minute has been added on...
45' Mexico break again. AGAIN, for like the 54624th time and Vela again gets his shot away from the left. Just wide! Germany will be lucky to get into half time with the score just 0-1!
44' Another predictable attack from Germany, just lack the creativity in attack as Khedira and Kroos have been fairly clueless.
43' Another brilliant Mexico break as they win the ball in their own half. Vela has some game, lads and lasses. His marauding run down the middle was supported well by Layun but the latter's pass was just too far for Lozano! Nearly!
42' Germany are seeing a lot of the ball in the attacking third now as Mexico have dropped very deep after the goal...
41' Kimmich on the ball now. Everytime Lozano has broken forward, the Bayern fullback has been caught napping. Woefully out of position...
40' Yellow card for Moreno for time wasting! So needless!
38' Brilliant freekick by Kroos as Ochoa scrambles to save it in the end! Germany win the second ball but a rash tackle by Boateng puts an end to the move and some reprieve for El Tri!
37' Germany attack instantly after the goal and win a freekick after Muller's shot is blocked. Kimmich won the second ball, but was fouled in the process. Dangerous position this...Kroos and Ozil on the freekick...
A brilliant counter by the Mexicans who win the ball in their own half and Guardado finds finds Chicha with a smart pass. The forward does well to find Lozano with an inch-perfect pass for Lozano, who's little flick sent Hummels back on to Bavaria! The finish, EMPHATIC! Neuer, no chance!
35' GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL! LOZANO!
34' WHAT A BALL BY VELA! Almost caresses it into Layun's path! Almost! Just a tad over-hit and Neuer collects it!
33' A good spell on the ball by Mexico who do well to keep the ball in the German half. Gallardo's cross evades everyone! Incredible! Cleared by Plattenhardt in the end...
31' Muller tries a blind cross into the Mexican box but it takes a deflection off Gallardo and is collected safely by Ochoa. Germany have looked very lacklustre in the attacking third so far. Werner hasn't had the service. Mexico are doing well to mark Ozil out of the game...
30' Boateng tries his crossfield pass to go effect again and find Draxler on the left. The PSG man is too slow after collecting it well and Mexico get enough players back. Draxler has been very clumsy so far to be honest...
29' Layun with another shot! Comfortably gobbled up by Neuer again. Lozano set him up for the shot, jeez, the kid has been very active on the left and is causing Kimmich a few problems...
28' Hummels with a brilliant BLOCK! Lozano had space and time and his crazy pace to break on the left, but the Bayern man timed his block perfectly! Germany come away with the ball...
27' In no time, Germany get it forward and win a throw in down the right. Mexico, though, break ONCE AGAIN....
26' From one end to the other! Mexico break once again and Lozano does brilliant to evade two players from the left and squares it to Layun. The latter's shot is wild and way over the bar!
25' Germany win a freekick in the Mexican half as Muller was fouled by Gallardo. Dangerous position this...
24' Rash challenge by Moreno this time on Khedira. The ref gives him a talking to, but nothing more. Germany need to slow it down here and get control of that midfield. Ozil hasn't been involved all that much so far...
23' Kimmich with a late challenge in Herrera. Mexico are overcrowding the German midfield here and the breaks are looking a lot more threatening. Chicha has good pace, just needs to improve his decision making here...
22' SHOT BY KROOS! That was a shot in anger more than anything else, but straight at Ochoa! Mexico break forward but Chicharito again takes too long and picks the wrong pass...
21' Ozil drifts wide to find a pass for Werner but Mexico do well to get the bodies at the back and smother the chance. Mexico play it long, but the Germans win the ball and maraud forward again...
20' Werner with a big chance! Had the chance to find Draxler on the left but he took the shot after being found by Kimmich. Wasted effort as Ochoa collects it safely...
19' Mexicans have done pretty well in the last few minutes, to be fair to them.Just can't test Neuer!
18' CHICHARITO with a big CHANCE! Top pass by Guardado to find the former on the left, but he takes too long and Boateng comes back to make the tackle! Should have tested Neuer from there!
17' For all of Germany's territorial advantage, they haven't really tested Ochoa. Just checked the lineup again to see if Draxler is play...cause he hasn't seen much of it at all!
16' OH NEUER! Nearly does a Schumacher as he came out of the box and took the ball from Chicharito! Brave 'keeping that!
15' Kimmich with a smashing cross from the right and it just evades Khedira! The cross is nearly put into his own net by Salcedo! Corner to Germany...
14' Chicharito wins the header following a good cross by Layun, but Neuer is there to calmly collect it. He sets it up for Kimmich on the right and Germany push forward...
14' Mexico win a freekickin the German half. Promising position this again...
13' Mexico manage to keep the ball well in the German half but boy are the men in white well drilled! Absolutely nothing. A lot of sideways passing before Germany win the ball...
12' Gallardo with an important interception on the left as Muller's cross nearly found Kimmich. Germany win the throw in and Ozil passes it to Muller with the outside of his boot, a la Quaresma, but the shot is smothered by Ochoa.
11' Herrera with the shot! Neuer makes mincemeat out of that. You don't test him out from 20 odd yards. He'll gobble the damn ball from there!
10' None of the 'keepers have had a proper save to make. A lot of sparring right now, no blows landed yet. The Germans are defensively sound, as ever...
9' Layun's freekick is way over the bar! Never looked right while taking it! Germans in possession now...
8' Germany get forward but Ayala puts in a top tackle and sends the Mexicans on the counter. Vela marauds down the midfield and is fouled by Hummels! Dangerous position this...
7' Ah! Hummels' left foot shot is saved easily by Ochoa. It was straight at the custodian, however. Germany getting a few moves going now...
6' Germany win a corner as Werner's cross is blocked by Ayala! Germany play it short...
5' The Germans keep it going! Boateng finds Plattenhardt with a sublime crossfield pass and the Hertha man's trap is equally good! The cross isn't quite accurate though and the Mexicans get a throw in...
4' The Germans manage a spell of possession, passing it around in midfield. Mexico can't press that midfield duo of Kroos and Khedira, they are just too good on the damn ball!
3' Kimmich with a smashing pass from the right to Werner and the Leipzig star's shot is just dragged wide! End to end, just the way we like it!
2' Been only a minute, but it already feels like opposite day as the Mexicans try a bit of the German geggenpress themselves! The Germans, technically supreme, evade the press and get forward...
1' Mexico start off well, get a feel of the ball before Ochoa tries to hoof it to Lozano on the left. El Tri win the second ball and break forward as Lozano takes a shot that is blocked by Boateng! What a start!
Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Kickoff! Mexico get is started, shooting from right to left, in their green top and white shorts. Germany are in their white top and the black shorts! Get in!!!
Manuel Neuer, like a foot and a half taller than the opposition skipper Guardado, comes out for the toss. Jeez, the guy is big!
And the teams are out, ladies and gentlemen! No looking back now. Kein Zurück, as they say in German. There's a popular song by Synth-pop band Wolfsheim, do have a listen after this brilliant game if you have the time! Time for a good game of football now!
Germany vs Mexico - Preview for the defending champions

Blimey, Marco Reus hasn't made the playing XI. But fear not, Germans. That is still some attack. Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler and the speedy Timo Werner up top! Add the buccaneering runs of Marvin Plattenhardt and Joshua Kimmich to that and the Mexicans might have their hands full! This is the World Cup, though, and you can't really take El Tri lightly, can you?

In Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado, they have a pretty combative midfield, but stopping the Germans will be easier said than done. You can't help but think that the patter of the game will be Mexico defending and trying to hit the Germans on the break using Vela and Hernandez's pace.

Joachim Low's side have often mixed caution with aggression and despite their poor international friendly form leading up to the tournament, expect the defending champions to stick to a bit of old school geggenpress and stifle the Mexicans for space or time on the ball.

Germany's squad depth is immense and in case you've not head of Plattenhardt -- the man who has replaced Jonas Hector who is out with a cold -- let me tell you that he is no slouch. The Hertha Berlin left-back sure can wrap his foot around the ball and often delivers a mean cross into the box. Marco Reus will be waiting on the bench and boy, he is going to be another animal Low can bring on later in the game.

Germany vs Mexico - Team News

There aren’t too many injury concerns surrounding the two teams. Germany have used the likes of Jerome Boateng and Manuel Neuer in recent friendlies and the duo are fit to start against Mexico.

The fitness of Neuer was in particular a big talking point as the Bayern Munich star was named in the final squad despite missing a majority of the season with a broken foot. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen impressed this season and many felt he deserved to start over Neuer regardless of how fit the latter was.

The only doubt for the game is Mesut Ozil who is a sure-shot starter when fit. The Arsenal attacker has been attracting controversy off the field as him and Ilkay Gundogan were spotted with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. Low is the sort of manager who doesn’t mess about, and if reports and the pre-match press conference hints are to be believed, Julian Draxler could be given the nod ahead of the former Real Madrid attacker.

Mexico, on the other hand, have a full fit squad to choose from and will hope to upset a German team who like the last World Cup, could have had a better few weeks prior to their first game.

Germany vs Mexico - Key Players

Marco Reus’ time has finally come! After the painful injuries before the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Euros, the Borussia Dortmund attacker has managed to keep fit and will be raring to go. Reus had a pretty slow start to the season owing to yet another injury but played a key role for the Ruhr based outfit in the Rückrunde which sets him up nicely for the World Cup. He could be given a more central role today if Ozil doesn’t start, which means Draxler will feature on the left.

For Mexico, skipper Andres Guardado will have a key role to play in the midfield. The 31-year old has been playing in central midfield and will have the responsibility of stopping the likes of Kroos and Khedira from dictating the tempo of the game. Easier said than done!
