ICE vs CRO Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
1 - 2
G. Sigurðsson (P) 76'
53' M. Badelj
90' I. Perišić
Croatia go through as group toppers. They face Denmark in the round of 16. Iceland on the other hand will be on their flight back home. They will not be disheartened though. This was a fantastic campaign for them.
That's it for me. What an amazing night of football.
AND IT'S DONE! The referee blows the final whistle. Iceland are in absolute tears here, you gotta feel for them. They threw everything they had at Croatia but just could not get the telling goal. Argentina have sneaked through. Marcos Rojo the unlikely hero.
94' Just over the bar. A corner is whipped into the box by Sigurdsson but Finnbogason's header deflects just over the bar
92' 4 minutes of added time BTW. But things are done and dusted here. Iceland have fought hard but Croatia just had that extra bit of quality in the final third
92' That Perisic goal has broken Iceland hearts. They had a chance to steal one here
90' PERISIIIIIIC WHAT A FINISH. Bradaric with a lovely ball in behind the defence. Perisic takes it in his stride and leathers one into the top corner
89' Iceland with their final change. Traustason replaces Bjarnason
86' SO CLOSE. Perisic with a delightful freekick, over the wall and it flies inches over the cross
84' Another yellow is brandished. This time to Saevarsson. Perisic sets off on the break, easily dances past the challenge of Saevarsson who takes him down to the ground before he can progress any further. Professional challenge
83' Poor challenge by Jedvaj as he goes in late on Gudmundsson. Freekick for Iceland
82' Corner for Croatia. They send the big guns up. Rakitic to take. Can Lovren make amends at the other end? The ball is whipped in but well dealt with by Iceland who set off on the break
80' Croatia make their final sub. Rakitic comes on for the final 10 minutes in place of Kovacic
78' Meanwhile, Nigeria have been denied a penalty. As things stand, Nigeria are still going through. Iceland need another one, or two.
76' Sigurdssonnnnn. What a finish. Steps up confidently and smashes one straight down the middle. Iceland are level. Unbelievable scenes
75' PENALTY FOR ICELAND. Dejan Lovren the culprit. Sigurdsson whips a ball in and it strikes Lovren on the hand
73' WHAT A MISS. Iceland beat the offside trap with absurd ease. A beatuiful ball is whipped in from the right by Finnbogason but Bjarnason makes a complete mess of things and miskicks into the crowd. That was Iceland's chance
71' Iceland follow suit. One of the many Sigurdssons comes on to replace another Sigurdsson. Ah it's Sigurdarson. My bad
70' Croatia make their second change. Dejan Lovren replaces Pjaca
69' Ah. The game's fizzled out after the bright start to the second half. Croatia have seen off Iceland's initial surge and now look in complete control
68' Kramaric. Just wide. He receives the ball just outside the Iceland box and tries to curl one into the far corner but it's deflected wide for a corner
66' GYLFI SIGURDSSON. Cuts past his marker with absurd ease but his shot is wayward and ends up in the third tier
65' Croatia substitution.
Modric OFF
Bradaric ON
63' That's gotta hurt! Finnbogason tries to get on the end of a whipped cross into the box but absolutely crashes into Kalinic.
62' Lovely ball by Luka to Kramaric who has been invisible for the most part. He rises high but the keeper is up to the task and punches away with confidence.
61' Freekick for Croatia in a promising position. It's Modric to deliver
60' This game has absolutely taken off in the second half. Iceland are throwing everything they got at the Croatians who have somehow managed to hold firm. 30 minutes to go.
60' First yellow for Iceland. Hallfreðsson goes in late on Pjaca and is penalised for it. That was an absolute shocking challenge
58' Meanwhile, Nigeria have hit back with the equaliser. Victor Moses converted the penalty and as it stands, Nigeria are going through to the R16
54' OFF THE BAR. Sigurdsson's corner is met by Ingason who towers over the Croatians and fires his header into the crossbar. How have Iceland not scored here?
53' WHAT A SAVE BY KALINIC. Iceland hit back immediately and a long throw is met by Ingason who rises and powers a header which is heading to the top corner but Kalinic just about tips it over.
52' GOOOOOOOOALLL. Croatia lead. Modric works it out to Pivarić on the left. His whipped cross is deflected straight into the path of Badelj who smashes one into the top corner.
50' OFF THE BAR. Badelj picks the ball up 30 yards out looks up and fires one towards goal. It takes a deflection and crashes into the crossbar.
49' Meanwhile, Nigeria have a penalty. What drama. They score and the complexion of the group changes completely
48' Oh Ćorluka. Uses his experience and shepherds Gunnarsson out of play.
47' The corner is whipped in but easily dealt with by Croatia, but yet again they lose possession cheaply and Iceland threaten
48' Lovely turn from Gylfi. 360s his way around Corluka and feeds Bjarnason on the left but his cross is blocked and out for a corner
47' Iceland win another freekick deep in Croatia territory after a poor challenge by Jedvaj . Sigurdsson takes but it floats harmlessly into Kalinic's hands
46' Croatia get us underway. Kovacic knocks one long more in hope than anything and it sails into the keeper's hands
And we are back! Iceland have 45 minutes to get a goal. Unless Nigeria can pull something back against Argentina. Let's do this!
Peeeeeep. The referee brings an end to an entertaining first half. Iceland struggled at the start, but have dominated the final 30 minutes. However, they are on their way out. They have 45 minutes to save their World Cup campaign. Join us in 15 for the second half
45' What a save by Kalinic. Gunnarsson receives the ball on the edge of the box and fires one at the top corner but Kalinic flies out to meet it and palms it over the post. Stunning stuff from the Croatian keeper
45' Great defending. A lovely ball is whipped in from the left by Magnússon but Ćaleta-Car gets in the way. The resulting corner is delivered by Sigurdsson, but Kalinic is cleaned up by Finnbogason and the referee blows for a freekick
42' AMBITIOUS! Hallfreðsson picks up the ball a good 40 yards out, looks up and absolutely leathers one towards the goal but it flies into orbit.
40' SO CLOSE. Badelj is dispossessed on the edge of the box, Finnbogason plays a lovely one-two with Sigurdsson and tries to curl one into the far corner but it flies narrowly wide of the post. How unlucky was that? Should've been 1-0. Croatia escape
38' AH Mateo Kovacic. He's completed 49 passes already, but Croatia simply cannot settle into a rhythm
37' Lovely turn, woeful strike. Perisic receives the ball 20 yards out, turns majestically onto his left but drags his shot well wide of the far post
35' CHAOS IN THE BOX. Hallfreðsson, Sigurdsson and Bjarnason get in each other's way attempting to get a shot off, they finally do but it's well blocked by Ćaleta-Car
34' It's all Iceland at the moment. Guðmundsson races down the right but his cross is easily blocked by Pivarić. The resulting corner is headed away.
32' Great attempt. Sigurdsson lifts it over the wall and gets it to dip but there's not enough curl on it and the keeper claims safely
31' Another Iceland freekick. Again Sigurdsson stands over it, from a much better position this time. Can he deliver when they need it the most?
29' Freekick Iceland. In dangerous territory. Sigurdsson to take. He decides against shooting and lobs one into the box. It's easily dealt with by Corluka
28' Iceland corner. Sigurdsson whips a lovely ball into the box, again Magnusson rises to meet it, again he cannot connect well enough and guides his header wide. Iceland finally threatening
26' RORY DELAP TIME. Gunnarsson with a wicked throw into the box and Magnusson flicks it on but it's just beyond any white shirts. That was close!
25' I'm not sure what Iceland's tactics are at the moment. They need a goal but they are content sitting back and Letting Croatia dominate. With Modric and Perisic in the ranks it's only a matter of time before the Croats get a goal
23' OH CORLUKA. He may be about 80 years old but he's moving like an 18-year-old. Charges back to intercept a goal-bound through ball and breaks down another Iceland attack
22' Pivaric and Perisic link up nicely on the left. However, he opts to cut back instead of whip one into the box and Modric goes all the way back to his defenders as Croatia look to build again
21' Bjarnason needs more attention on the sidelines. I'm not sure how long he can continue like this. He's fighter though is this man.
20' Corner for Croatia. Modric takes it short, Perisic whips it into the box, but it's headed away by Ingason for another corner
19' The Viking clap is back, but I'm not sure why. Iceland have looked lethargic and sloppy in the opening 20 minutes.
17' Lovely play from Croatia. Modric, Perisic and Kovačić with a beautiful triangle on the edge of the Iceland box but a poor pass by Kovacic and the attack breaks down
16' Bjarnason is being patched up and he's good to go. Croatia looking to build from the back
15' Meanwhile, Argentina take the lead. And it's that man Lionel Messi. Why did we ever doubt him? Iceland in big trouble
14' Pjaca is carded for that elbow. He's lucky it isn't a red.
12' Bjarnason crumples to the floor in pain. Was he elbowed by Pjaca? It certainly looked like it. Blood's pouring out of Bjarnason's nose a the moment and we have a stoppage in play. That was unintentional but Pjaca is a lucky boy
10' It's still 0-0 in the Argentina game BTW if any of you were wondering. At the moment, Iceland and Argentina are both going OUT
9' Great run by Pjaca. Drives right through the heart of the Iceland defence, but he brought down at the edge of the box. The ref though waves play on. That looked like a foul to me
8' OOOH SO CLOSE. Lovely ball chipped over the top by Gunnarsson, Finnbogason beats the offside trap with a perfectly timed run bit the ball is a bit too heavy and settles into Kalinic's hands
6' Lovely ball down the right. Corluka sends Pjaca on his way but his touch lets him down and it runs out of play. Pjaca was in acres of space there
4' Great ball by Corluka finds Kovacic who is taken down by Ingason. The ball falls to Modric again but yet again a sloppy pass and Iceland avert danger
2' The teams feeling each other out. Kovacic finds Corluka who feeds it to Pjaca on the right. He lays it off to Modric but the attack breaks down
1' Bright start from Iceland as Guðmundsson charges at the Croatian defence but he is easily dispossessed
1' Iceland get us underway, kicking from left to right
The fans are in full voice. The Viking Clap is thundering across the stadium. It's time!
The teams are out for the anthems. We are moments away from kickoff
Managers speaketh:

Heimir Hallgrimsson: "Argentina, Portugal, Germany, it would be a shock not to qualify, for the final 16. If we managed to qualify for the final 16 it would probably be the biggest success in the short Icelandic football history," he said."They've done amazingly in the first two games. The players are enjoying to play under the coach [Zlatko Dalic] and I think we have to give them a lot of credit for the way they started this competition. They deserve to go all the way if they keep on playing this way."

Zlatko Dalic: "We want to beat Iceland to stay top of our group. We have our own style of play and we are going to stick to it while being watchful on their long balls and set pieces. We know everything about Iceland and they know everything about us."
Iceland vs Croatia - Preview

It's Iceland's shot at history. Playing in their first ever World Cup, Heimir Hallgrimsson's side have the chance to send Argentina and Leo Messi packing if they can match the result Jorge Sampaoli's side pick up against Nigeria. However, standing between them and a place in the R16 is a devastatingly efficient Croatia side. While the likes of Rakitic and Mandzukic amongst others have been rested, they still look a formidable unit led by Modric and co.

Iceland though will not be overawed by the occasion or the opposition. They have pulled off stunning upsets in the past (I'm looking at you England), and they will be buoyed by the return of Berg-Gudmundsson.
The Rostov Arena will be packed to the rafters and the Viking Clap is sure to be out in full volume. Can they pull it off?
Confirmed lineups:

Iceland vs Croatia: Team News

Iceland have a couple of injury concerns ahead of their big game. Johann Berg Gudmundsson is still being assessed after suffering a torn muscle in his side's opening game. Defender Ragnar Sigurdsson could also miss out after taking a blow to the head in the game against Nigeria.

Croatia, who have all but topped their group, are expected to ring the changes. Ante Rebic, Ivan Rakitic, Marcelo Brozovic, Sime Vrsaljko and Mario Mandzukic are unlikely to play a part considering they are just one booking away from a ban. Luka Modric too will be rested with much sterner tests to come. Mateo Kovacic could get his first start of the campaign while Kramaric is set to return up top. Pjaca and Bradaric too are set to feature in the starting XI.

Iceland vs Croatia: Probable lineups

Iceland Probable XI: Haldorsson; Magnusson, Sigurdsson, Arnason, Saevarsson, Giaslason; Bjarnason, Sigurdsson, Gunnarsson; Finnbogason, Bodvarsson
Croatia Probable XI: Kalinic; Jedvaj, Corluka, Vida, Pivaric; Badelj, Kovacic, Bradaric; Pjaca, Kramaric, Perisic

Iceland vs Croatia: Head to Head

Matches played:
Iceland wins: 1
Croatia wins: 4
Draws: 1

The two sides have met 6 times in the past with Croatia clearly the more dominant team. Iceland's only win came in the World Cup qualifiers when Magnusson's stoppage-time header gave them all three points.

This will, however, be their first meeting in a major competition. Interestingly, only one out of their past six matches have seen both teams get on the scoresheet.

Most recent meeting: Iceland 1-0 Croatia

Iceland vs Croatia: Prediction

Predicted scoreline: Iceland 1-1 Croatia

It's goals that win you matches and Iceland have struggled to hit the back of the net thus far. They sneaked one past Argentina and were shut out by Nigeria - two teams that do not boast the greatest defensive prowess - and I do not see them scoring more than a solitary goal here. Croatia will be without a few of their stars especially in midfield and that will affect their buildup play and service to the strikers. However, they still have the talent to get something out of this game. Score draw for me and Iceland to crash out.
