FULL TIME! And that's the end of today's play, as Iran progress to the quarter finals, leaving the Mexican players distraught. Although Mexico have kept the ball better, it was Iran, who got the better chances, often bursting forward in counter attack with great pace. The Iranians have shown that great quality, which they have already proved with a 4-0 win over Germany in the group stage. The West Asian side will next face Spain in the quarter finals.
...
Lainez breaks down the right again, but is ably tackled by Nasiri, who seems to have caught a trailing boot in the process.
...
SIX minutes of injury time have been added on!
...
Sayyad agan broke down the left on a counter attack, and was one-on-one with keeper Lopez, who again did brilliantly to save it.
...
Chance! Ghaderi breaks down the left again, draws the keeper, and squares to Sayyad, who took a touch to control the ball. However, Mexico keeper Lopez recovered by then, and saved the shot. Ghaderi got onto the rebound again, and crossed it in. Sayyed, who got to it, looped an easy catch for the keeper with his header.
...
Ghaderi intercepts in the Mexico half, as the ball falls to Sayyad, who plays it through to Delfi. However, Delfi's shot is wide.
...
Yellow Card: Sayyad picks up a yellow card for a tackle from behind.
...
Yellow Card: Delfi picks up a yellow card for showing dissent, as he kicks the ball away, after the referee awarded a free kick to Mexico.
...
Its all Mexico now, as IRan seem to be content with just seeing out the game.
...
Torres crosses it in from wide, but he put too much into that ball, as De La Rosa could not get onto that cross.
...
Chance! Lainez is slowly growing into the game. He first loses a couple of defenders on the right flank, to square it in, but the corss was intercepted. Just seconds later, he pulled the trigger from the are after receiving a loose ball, but keeper Zadeh was up to the task.
...
Iran goalkeeper Zadeh seems to be a little indisposed, as he goes down, holing his left shoulder. The rest of the players get a much-needed drinks break, while Zadeh gets some medical attention.
...
CHANCE! Mexico get a free kick in a dangerous position. Torres lines up his shot, aimed at the top corner. However, the ball curled a bit too much, as it swerved onto the post, and ricocheted back in the penalty box, before being cleared.
...
Chance! Lainez makes a dangerous run into the Iran box, dashes to the by-line, and cuts it back, for one of his teammates to pull the trigger. However, the pass takes a deflection off one of the Iran defenders and keeper Zadeh collects it comfortably.
...
Some top notch defending by Olivas! Iran are repeatedly making attacks down the right, but he has been foiling all of them.
...
Iran make a substitution, as Emir Zadeh comes on for Davaran.
...
Although the intensity has not gone out of the game as of yet, some of the previous accuracy of passing seems to have trickled out. Perhaps the heat is affecting the players.
...
Mexico make a substitution, as Huerta comes in for Lopez
...
Torres breaks down the left for Mexico, and plays it in to Lopez on the left, who crosses it in, but keeper Zadeh parries it away. However, the ball falls to Lainez, just inside the box. His shot is inches wide of the near post.
...
Ghaderi again down the left side. He runs at a couple of defenders, and manages to beat them, but the successive pass is too inaccurate.
...
Ghaderi breaks through the middle, and plays a through ball to Delfi, who cuts in and lays it off on the edge of the area, back to Ghaderi. However, Ghaderi's shot is blocked.
...
Ghaderi on the break for Iran, down the left flank. He tries to jink past a defender, but only managed to run the ball out of play.
...
And we're off, in the second half, as Mexico get things underway. They do not seem to have altered their strategy much, as they look to pass it around and keep possession of the ball.
...
Half Time! And with that, we come to the end of the first half, with the game hanging on a knife-edge. What a half it has been, for the few supporters who have turned up at the Fatorda Stadium, in Goa. Iran have taken the early lead, but Mexico have pulled one back. The second half should be an interesting watch.
...
Chance! Lopez latches on to an aerial through ball, and enters the box, before squaring it to De La Rosa, who scuffed his shot well wide of goal.
...
Yellow Card! Ghaderi goes down under a challenge from Robles, and earns himself a booking for simulation.
...
That goal seems to have given Mexico a lot of impetus. Lainez is the perpetrator-in-chief, as he jinks past a hoard of Iranian defenders. However, he soons run out of space, and has no option but earning a mere throw-in for his team.
...
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And its DE LA ROSA, who levels things up for Mexico! Zadeh did well to save a venomous shot from Guitierrez, but De La Rosa was alert at the edge of the box, as the collected the ball and volleyed it home.
...
Chance! Torres breaks from the right, and squares it to striker Lopez inside the box. However, his shot was parried away by Iran keeper Zadeh.
...
Delfi breaks away on the right for Iran, enters the box, and sends in a low cross. However, it was straight at a defender, who hooved it away for a corner.
...
And with that, we go into a water break, as the heat here, in Goa seems to a bit too much for the two sets of players.
...
Corner! Mexico get a at last, but the Iran defenders are up to the task, as Jalali heads it clear.
...
Mexico coach Arteaga seems a forlorn figure on the sidelines, as he constantly yells, "Rapido! Rapido", egging his players on, to pass the ball quicker.
...
Zadeh breaks through the centre from an Iran clearance, but he is brought down by what seems to be a legitimate tackle by the Mexico defence.
...
The resulting free kick peters out, after nobody was able to get on to the end of that cross.
...
Iran show some good possession of the ball, laying a momentary siege on goal, and win a free kick after a collision between Ghaderi and Lainez.
...
Mexico are desparately looking for a way back into this game. Midfielder Gutierrez seems to be acting as the focal point of their attacks. However, Iran are closing them down well, inside their own half.
...
It's an absolute onslought from Iran today! Mexico have had the majority of the possession, but Iran have been the effective side, making their counter attacks count.
...
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its a dream start for Iran! Sayyad does well to close down the defender in the Mexico third, as the ball ricochets off a trailing foot, and falls kindly for the Iran forward, to dink it over the keeper's head, to double Iran's advantage!
...
GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!!!! Sharifi steps up to the spot and slots it home, sending the keeper the wrong way.
