IRA vs POR Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
1 - 1
K. Ansarifard (P) 90'+3'
45' Ricardo Quaresma
53' Cristiano Ronaldo (PM)

Portugal and Ronaldo power through in 2nd - Iran, for all their efforts, finish 3rd in the group and they're going out. But bloody hell, if you do one thing today give Iran a round of applause!

That's all from an absolutely goosebump-y Anirudh Menon. Thank you for reading.

90' + 7' Mohammadi lifts a ball into the far post after a bit of passing it around -- but the ball flies out of play. OH MY. Patricio takes a deep, deep, breath
90' + 6' Iran's supporters have been as immense as their team here. They have been absolutely brilliant.
90' + 5' Santos eating up the seconds by bringing on Guedes for Andre Silva. Silva was, of course, on the other side of the field.
90' + 4' OH MY LORD TAREMI! OH MY GOOD LORD! Azmoun has a shot, the ball bounces out to Taremi- who lashes it into the side netting.
OH WHAT A PEN! Ansarifad absolutely leathers it into the top left corner of Patricio's goal. No chance he's saving that
89' Ghoddos pings it in - Azmoun heads it down; Pepe hacks it clear! BUT THE REF IS CHECKING FOR A PENALTY! VAR - FOR A HANDBALL ON CEDRIC! OH MY!
87' Ronaldo teases, turns, torments... and wins a freekick down the left flank
86' Portugal are passing it around like their Iberian cousins - death by a thousand passes.
84' OH MY LORD! MOROCCO LEAD IN THE OTHER GAME! THIS IS CRAZY! Santos looks to make a game-calming substitution by taking off Mario and bringing on Moutinho!
80' Andre Silva hacks it clear in the most uncompromising manner you'll see. Ronaldo and Pouraliganji go at it - there's suggestions of his forearm smacking across the Iranian's face - and the ref is going to VAR!
79' Portugal are passing it around the back here - but a poor touch from Cedric forces him to dive in on Amiri; and the Iranians will throw everyone forward as Ebrahimi stands over the kick near the halfway line
77' Portugal move forward the other way, and although Ebrahimi does ever so well to stop Ronaldo's ball reaching Mario; he can;t stop Andre Silva having a shot -- thankfully for him, the shot's hopeless
76' Amiri runs at Guerreiro, always a smart thing to do, and pings it in - where Pepe's there to leather it clear.
74' OH! CONTROVERSY! Carvalho and Amiri clash in the box, Quieroz screams for a pen, but his players dont. The ref goes out to the Iranian bench and asks the coach to calm down. Calm down he doesn't as he throws on the attacking force of Ansarifad for the defensive steadiness of Ezatolahi
73' Cedric and B. Silva try a one-two; but Mohammadi steals in and runs at Portugal; for whom Carvalho comes in and stands in his way.
72' OH! GHODDOS! The sub gets onto the ball, sizes it up - and screws it well wide of Rui Patricio's goal. Great turn, though - Ghoddos has hit the ground running.
71' Carvalho gets brought down by a forceful Ebrahimi challenge -- then Silva gets it and belts it into row Z.
69' WOOF! Jahanbhaksh does superbly to shrug off Guerreiro and swing in a cross to the box, where Pepe heads out well ahead of Azmoun. The two coaches then ring in the changes as Ghoddos comes on for Jahanbhaksh and the angry looking Quaresma gets taken off (for his own good, really) for Bernardo Silva
68' Carvalhos's robbed as he holds onto the ball for too long; but Adrien Silva gets in there to mop up; and the ball moves at pace to the Iranian third; where the move breaks down against that bulwark of white - they are still holding their shape delightfully well.
66' Portugal continue passing it around calmly - till they give it to Ronaldo. He jinks inside one, then the other, takes it outside a third; and absolutely leathers a shot well wide of Beiranvand's goal. He wants this goal
62' Ezatolahi and Quaresma have a go at each other in the Iranian box; the Iranian lightly slapping him across his face with the back of his hand - Quaresma exacts revenge in the most Quaresma manner ever... by smashing into Ezatolahi with the full force of a trailer truck. OUCH! A deserved yellow for the Portuguese goalscorer
61' Iran look to counter; but it breaks on that dyke that is Carvalho. Raphael Guerreiro gets on to the ball, has a little run and smashes it at goal from 30 odd yards; to say that Ronaldo's upset with his left back is like saying a Delhi winter is cold. It ain't cold, son. It's hell.
60' Portugal move play a good deal further forward with Quaresma winning a free throw off Cedric; from which he wins another. Santos and Quieroz are both yelling out encouragement and advice and scoldings to their charges. This is a real, real battle - make no mistake
58' The corner's headed out for a throw by Azmoun. Andre Silva then does well to win a throw off Mohammadi and win a freekick. That'll help calm Portuguese nerves. To say the Iranians are pumped up is to undersell it. THE ATMOSPHERE IS ELECTRIC!
57' Jahanbhaksh goes down under pressure from Pepe, but it's a fair challenge - no appeals. The Iranians motor forward and as Rezaeian curls one into the box, Pepe slides to touch it away from Jahanbhaksh. WHAT A SAVE, that from the veteran Portuguese defender
56' Quieroz takes off Hajsafi and brings on Mohammadi - who of course plays his club football in Russia with Akhmat Grozny
55' Azmoun and Cedric clash in the Portuguese box and the Iranian striker goes down -- the ref waves away the Iranian's appeals. This is ratcheting up the already sky high levels of intensity
54' Azmoun goes into the book as he argues the ref's decision to stop play as Iran countered -- Adrien Silva was down in the middle of the field (to be fair, before the counter started). Silva's receiving treatment.
53' Beiranvand saves from Ronaldo! OH, MY LORD WHAT A SAVE! Ronaldo hits it low and hard to the keeper's left and he dives superbly to pat it down and then hold onto it! Ronaldo's missed!
52' Guess who's going to take the pen?
51' Ehsan Hajsafi gets into the book for arguing too vociferously. Iran are losing the plot here!
49' Oh, wait! VAR has been called upon. AND THE DECISION OVERTURNS THE DECISION! PENALTY!!
48' Quaresma looks to take on Hajsafi, but the left back holds his ground, wins the tackle, and motors forward where he runs into the massive protective screen erected by Carvalho and Adrien Silva
47' Portugal motor forward, Adrien Silva feeds in Quaresma; who looks to backheel it to Ronaldo -- but Hosseini reads it and thumps it upfield in the no-nonsense manner
46' Iran are not giving up the ghost just yet. Azmoun recieves the ball from Ebrahimi and looks to glide his way into the box but Carvalho and Adrien Silva close the door on him

Iran was immense, absolutely immense. But the Portuguese superstar that is Ricardo Quaresma is the difference between the two sides. Good Lord, what a goal.
45' + 3' Portugal play keep ball. They'll play keep ball all day.
45' + 1' The Morfovia Arena's still reeling from that. Best goal of the tournament for me, that. Three minutes to be added on
OH! TRIVELA! OH! TRIVELA! Quaresma plays a lovely little one-two with Adrien Silva, runs into the box and curls it into the far corner with the outside of his boot. Meeting it first time as he's running full pelt. THAT IS A TRIVELA
44' Iran's central attacking midfielder, Ebrahimi, has just found himself shepherding the ball away from Ronaldo's grasp inside his own box. That tell you anything about the organisational skills of Senor Quieroz?
43' Azmoun gambols forward, full of life and the vibrancy of youth,, before slipping in Jahanbhaksh, who's bullied off the pitch by Pepe in the uncompromising manner
42' Quaresma drifts into a more central area, and upon being fed by Cedric, looks to Trivela it into the far top corner. It hits the far top corner. Of the stands behind Beiranvand's goal.
41' At the other end, Adrien Silva and Ebrahimi collide; but the ref deems it a fair fifty-fifty of the robust sort. Portugal look to move forward; but the Iranians have learned from their mistakes; they are closing down Carvalho extremely well here
40' OH! Ronaldo, fed up of all this, drops deep - collects it and lets fly (think Manchester United vs Porto in the Champions League) but it doesn't have anywhere near enough oomph to trouble Beiranvand
39' Ronaldo has a go at Hajsafi again. Once again, the Iranian left back holds his calm. Sideways go the men in red.
38' Ronaldo loses the ball with a loose pass; Iran scram forward on the counter, but Azmoun's mazy little dribble meets its death at the hands of the uncompromising Pepe.
37' Amiri floats into space down the middle of the Portuguese box and is found well by the smooth Taremi. He then looks to tee up Azmoun; but Pepe is onto the plot and he bullies the ball off him and runs out with it.
36' Pass-pass-pass go Portugal; Keep doing it smile the Iranians. Cedric gets fed up and lifts one into the box; where Beiranvand comes out authoritatively and claims well.
35' Portugal are patiently passing it about - but so long as it is in front of them, the Iranians will be happy to let them do so. Adrien Silva looks to play in Quaresma down the line with a cute li'l reverse, but Hajsafi is alive to the danger
34' OH! OH! Rezaeian lifts a delightful ball into the middle and Pouraliganji smashes a header straight into Patricio's hands. OH! What a chance for the Asian giants
33' ...and Jahanbakhsh is taken out by Guerreiro as he screams forward down the wing. The AZ man looks in the mood. Hajsafi and Rezaeian stand over it. This one's at an angle to the right of Patricio's goal at the edge of the box.
32' Iran aren't seeing any of the ball; it's all Portugal, all the time - and just as I say that Iran break forward with a lovely interception by Ezatolahi ahead of Ronaldo...
31; The corner comes to nothing as Quaresma's ball bounces off Fonte's noggin' and out for a goalkick.
30' A lovely, lovely, ball in from Cedric finds Quaresma in acres of space - Ehsan Hajsafi having gone walkabout again (the weakest link in this chainmail fence) and Quaresma motors into the box; where he can only win a corner as he's faced by a giant wall of white.
29' Azmoun drops deep to nick the ball off William Carvalho; who then gives away a foul by taking out the Iranian lad for having the audacity to steal from him. For those who haven't seen either of them, Carvalho's about 15 ft bigger than the Iranian
28' Andre Silva drifts wide to recieve the ball and look to stretch Iran out - nothing doing and sideways the ball goes from man in red to man in red
27' Ronaldo looks to provide the cutting edge with a disguised pass into Andre Silva's path; but the striker's strayed offside. Only way he's finding space into space.
26' Portugal play keep-ball for a while as they try to find an opening in this rock-solid white wall placed in front of them. Whatever else Quieroz may not know, he certainly drills a defense better than most
25' Carvalho gives the ball away to Taremi, but Quaresma battles his side back into possession - not something you are used to seeing that mad magician do... and Santos appreciates it.
24' A lot of treatment. Santos' team want to be sure he's fully fit to continue... and he is.
22' Portugal look to counter at pace - Quaresma drifting into the space where Hajsafi ought to have been. Iran counter-the-counter... and Azmoun and Amiri combine to play in a lovely ball that Patricio comes out and collects just ahead of Jahanbakhsh. The AZ Alkmaar man, though, accidentaly caught the keeper on the follow-through, shin-to-head, and the goalkeeper needs plenty of attention.
21' OH! The right back takes and the ball flies inches wide of Rui Patricio's near post
20' Back in Saransk, Azmoun almost beats Pepe in the air... Portugal go flying up the field but a crunching Eztolahi tackle takes Ronaldo and the ball out. Iran scram forward, Hajsafi nutmegs Adrien Silva... and the Iranians have a freekick about twenty-five yards out, just left of centre. Near-perfect position for Razaeian.
19' By the by; Spain and Morocco are playing out a belter. It's 1-1 now.
18' From which nothing stems - apart from Adrien Silva blasting the little round thing into space. No, not sputnik.
17' Quaresma sends it deep; Carvalho heads it across - Pepe tries a scissor kick; Iran look to break but Quaresma controls a Guerreiro clearance with the single greatest touch you'll see all day; and Andre Silva barrells his way to winning a corner.
16' Ronaldo takes; it balloons of the wall and away for a corner. Portugal are piling on the pressure here
15' Quaresma takes - wins another corner off Pouraliganji. Quaresma takes another and Adrien Silva is taken out just at the edge of the box. Freekick for Portugal, twenty two yards out, just left of centre. Guess who'll take it?
14' Cedric sets off Quaresma down the right again. A whipped cross again, confusion in the box again, a corner for Portugal
13' OH MY LORD! Ali Beiranvand's shaking with nerves here! After some neat, neat work by Ronaldo in the middle, Quaresma whipped in a lovely ball that Ronaldo missed; but Beiranvand couldn't hold -- and Rezaeian smashes it clear.
12' WOOOF! After knocking it around a bit, Quaresma whips in a teasing cross that misses the rather stupendous leap of Cristiano Ronaldo by this much. Beiranvand punches it clear.
10' Taremi glides forward - such a silky smooth player he is - and tries to pick out Azmoun; Fonte gets to it and hammers his clearance out to touch. From the long throw that ensues, Iran lose the ball to an infringement I didn't quite pick out in the Portugal box
9' Just as I say that they lose the ball. Ronaldo pings a quick throw out to Silva; who holds the ball up well plays it back to Carvalho. The midfielder pings another one deep; it's far worse than all his others till now; and Beiranvand should have it covered, but Ezatolahi, dropping deep, hacks at it and it falls at the feet of Joao Mario - WHO BLASTS IT WELL OVER THE RELATIVELY UNGUARDED NET! GOOD CHANCE, THAT
8' A poor touch from Ronaldo allows Jahanbhaksh to gambol forward; they are seeing much more of the ball now.
7' Carvalho is pinging balls out wide like an ersatz Rui Costa (as blasphemous as that sounds now that I've typed it out); but Quaresma's second touch fails him and Iran counter at pace... Azmoun touches the ball onto Jahanbhaskh who does a little Ronaldo-chop to get rid of the attentions of Guerreiro before teeing up Amiri at the edge of the box -- but the midfielder shanks his shot well wide of the goal
6' The first real moment of excitement for the loud, loud Iranians - Azmoun runs onto a loose pass and tries to force his way into the box; but neither Fonte nor Pepe are in any mood to oblige.
5' Portugal are moving for'ard incessantly. Andre Silva is shepherded out by Pouraliganji as he looks to make his way into the area.
4' AH. Ronaldo kills a ball dead with a velvet touch of his right boot. Nothing comes off the moment. or the move, but WOOF.
3' WOOF! Carvalho lifts an incredible 60 yarder's into the path of Joao Maria; who cleverly backheels it into the path of Ronaldo. He swerves a touch to avoid the onrushing Pouraliganji inside the box; and leathers a shot straight at Beiranvand - the 25 year old does well not to spill it
2' From the freekick, they play it short and Guerreiro ends up whipping a shot in toward Ronaldo, but the great man can't bring it under his control.
1' Ebrahimi smashes into Raphael Guerreiro by way of a welcome. These Iranians are no shrinking violets, let me tell you

Portugal in their gorgeous deep red will be kicking from right to left as you'd see it on the telly. Iranian in their beautiful all-white will be aiming to keep the ball rolling the other away. Football has commenced!
Hands have been shaken, photos have been taken, a coin is about to be tossed. Vuvuzelas screech their approval of the whole schebang. The Mordovia Arena is, to use the modern parlance, LIT AF

Enrique Caceras will be the man in the middle. An accountant by profession informs the voice on the telly. He better keep his cool tonight, eh?
The teams have marched out. The majestic, slow-rolling, Iranian anthem has been belted out by the 11 on the field and the thousands - men and women - in the stands. As the more flamboyant Portuguese anthem is belted out, the camera focuses in on him. The man. He's rarely looked more up for a fight has Mr. Ronaldo.

This is going to be a right proper belter.
Well, Shankar, Iran have proved that they are no pushovers. They were excellent against Morocco and good value for their win, while they were exceptionally unlucky not to come away with at least a point for their resilience and endeavour against Spain. Write them off at your own risk!
Have you guys seen that goatee Cristiano Ronaldo's been sporting? They asked him if it was about Messi, but it's apparently just a joke he shared with his great mate Ricardo Quaresma -- "We were in the sauna [before Portugal's game against Spain] and I started to shave and I left the goatee. I said if I score tomorrow, I would leave it for the rest of the tournament. And it gave me luck."

His coach Fernando Santos was quick to rubbish any speculations regarding the goatee being inspired by Messi and his G.O.A.T photoshoot -- "In Portugal, it is a common gesture to touch your chin. It means that you are satisfied. Football is not an individual sport, it is a team sport. It is not just about Cristiano Ronaldo,"

Those two. It's always about them, isn't it?
Praise be! Team Melli's erm... team is out. Alireza Jahanbaksh starts down the right while fellow 'Iran's-best-bet-for-goals' Sardar Azmoun takes up his customary position up top. Left-back Ehsan Hajsafi, meanwhile, has passed a late fitness test that means he can start and give Quieroz the sense of continuity he craves in his back-four.
On topic, though, how'd you think changing the guile of Bernardo Silva and Moutinho for the mercurial trickery of Quaresma and the solidity of Adrien Silva will affect Portugal's team dynamic? Tweet me your expert opinions, analysis, fears and dreams @AnirudhMenon89 -- or if you prefer the world's most antiquated form of communication, drop in a mail to

To paraphrase Nike, let's do this
If you don't know what KRA means, be happy, my dear little souls. Life is pretty darn good for you right now!
Team Melli are bracing for it by retweeting everything they are finding on the internet - everything but their lineups. Their Social Media guy's probably been told that his KRA includes at-least 15 retweets a day. No other reason.
Oh! Fernando Santos has rung in the changes - he's gone for the madness of Ric Quaresma in place of Bernardo Silva, the solidity of Adrien Silva in place of a half-fit Joao Moutinho, and the muscle of Andre Silva in place of a rather underwhelming Goncalo Guedes.

Brace for plenty of crossing into the box, Team Melli

Portugal vs Iran - Team News

We know it's Iran vs Portugal, technically, but who'd you rather read about first?

Fernando Santos goes into this game having a couple of decisions to make. Joao Moutinho (112 caps and counting) missed several days training due to illness, and the call will have to be made whether he's fit enough to start against the manic-running of the Iranians.

Raphael Guerreiro, meanwhile, has recovered from a thigh strain - but was exposed repeatedly against Morocco, the North Africans repeatedly targeting the left back, and with great success - and Santos may look to give young Ricardo Perreira a chance tonight. Goncalo Guedes has struggled to impress alongside Cristiano Ronaldo up top, so it'll be interesting to see if he's stuck with.

Carlos Queiroz will be setting up his side to exploit as many of Portugal's weaknesses as he can and few know the Portugal camp like he does. He may have to do without Olympiakos defender Ehsan Haji Safi - who suffered a thigh injury against Spain - and if he doesn't make the cut, Milad Mohammed of Akhmat Grozny is likely to step in.

A lot will depend on whether Saied Ezotalhi can control the pace of the game sitting deep inside his own half, and how Sardar Azmoun handles the pressure. Alireza Jahanbakhsh may well continue to sit out against Portugal after failing to make it to the starting XI vs Spain; Queiroz obeying his life-long principle of team dynamics above individual brilliance.

Portugal vs Iran - Probable Lineups

Portugal Predicted XI (4-4-2):
Rui Patricio; Cedric Soares, Pepe, Jose Fonte, Raphael Guerreiro; Bernardo Silva, William Carvalho, Joao Moutinho, Joao Mario; Goncalo Guedes, Cristiano Ronaldo

Iran Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Ali Beiranvand;  Ramin Rezaeian, Morteza Pouraliganji, Majid Hosseini, Milad Mohammed; Saeid Ezatolahi; Mehdi Taremi, Omid Ebrahimi, Vahid Amiri, Karim Ansarifard; Sardar Azmoun

Portugal vs Iran - Form Guide

(all competitions - most recent first)

Portugal: WDWDDL

This may not make for the prettiest reading at first glance, but the Portuguese are in decent form. Importantly, Cristiano Ronaldo is in decent form. They showed enterprise against the Spanish and resilience against the Moroccans and they'll need plenty of both today against Team Melli

Most recent game: 20/06/18: Portugal 1 - 0 Morocco

The Iranians come into this game on the back of a solid run of results. They may have been bested by Spain, but it took a slice of luck and a whole lot of belligerence from Diego Costa to do so; they will go into this expecting the win. The defeat to Spain was a first in 24 competitive matches overall.

Most recent game: 20/06/18: Iran 0 - 1 Spain

Portugal vs Iran - Head to Head

Games Played:

Portugal Wins: 2
This is Iran and Portugal's second World Cup encounter. In 2006, Cristiano Ronaldo's first World Cup goal, and one from Deco, earned Portugal a 2-0 win. Besides, Portugal have won three of their four World Cup games against Asian opposition, losing against host nation South Korea in 2002.

Iran Wins: 0
Iran have never won their final World Cup group stage game (D1, L3), scoring three and conceding 10 in those matches. Hell, Team Melli are winless against European opposition at the World Cup, losing six of their seven fixtures.

Draws: That is but elementary [math], my dear Watson. Really, really, elementary

Portugal vs Iran- Prediction

This is a tough one to call. Portugal should see it through if Cristiano Ronaldo comes to the party - but against an obdurate Iranian defence chasing their nation's first ever knock-out stage appearance, he needs his mates to come along with him. The whole entourage, please.Prediction? Portugal 1 - 0 Iran
