IRA vs SPA Match Result - FIFA WC 2018
0 - 1
54' Diego Costa

Not the most convincing game from La Furia Roja but they'll take this much needed win that puts their campaign back on track.

Anyway, that's that from the yap centre. I retire for the night.

94' A cross is floated into the area but De Gea charges out and punches it clear.
93' Iran have a throw-in on the left flank near the corner flag. Mohammadi will take a long throw-in to the box. Last chance for Iran.
92' Isco takes it instead and it's a rather poor freekick and Iran break on the counter.
92' Ebrahimi gets a yellow card for clawing Rodrigo to the ground. Spain have a freekick on the right side. Silva can swing this in.
91' Sardar receives a cross from the right flank but can only hoist it into the air for De Gea comes out and collects.
90' 4 minutes of stoppage time.
88' Substitution for Spain.

Rodrigo on. Costa off.
87' Spain midfielders swaggering around and striking poses as they keep the ball with some delightful passing. If this is how you're running down the clock, sign me up. I'll watch all day.
86' Can Iran pull a rabbit out of the hat? Spain have the ball though. Silva's attempted cross is blocked and Spain have a throw-in near the left flank corner flag.
85' Substitution for Iran.

Amiri off. Ghoddos on.
83' Asensio skims past the Iran midfield but his attempted lay off to Carvajal on the right flank is way off mark and Iran get a throw-in.
81' IRAN JUST MISSED THE BEST CHANCE OF THE MATCH. Amiri nutmegs Pique and freewheels past him before sending an enticing ball into the area. Taremi rises above the crowd but he misses from 6 yards out.
80' Into the last 10 minutes of the game. Can Spain iron out the nerves with a goal or will Iran light it up with an equalizer. Anything can happen.
79' Substitution for Spain.

Marco Asensio on. Lucas Vazquez off.
78' Amiri earns a yellow card after executing a duff challenge on Carvajal as the defender was trying to take the ball out of the defensive zone.
77' Isco dongs it at the wall. Sigh.
76' Spain have a freekick right outside the box. Isco and Silva are standing by it.
75' OH MY WORD! Iran affords yet another scare.

Taremi slides in trying to send a cross that's played into the far post from the left flank into goal but he just couldn't make it.
73' The game is now nicely set up for a stem-winding climax. Meanwhile, substitution for Iran.

Ansarifard off. Jahankbanksh on.
71' Substitution for Spain.

Koke replaces Iniesta.
69' Isco plays the corner low and Silva comes out to retrieve it. Silva serves it into the 6 yard box and Spain try to bundle it in, first Pique and then Costa who produce multiple punts in an effort to help the ball over the line. But Rezaeian and Hosseini are lying around making it impossible. Rezaeian absorbed a kick to his rib and the referee blows for offside.
68' Haji Safi is receving treatment. Substitution for Iran.

Mohammadi on, Haji Safi off.
67' Isco plays in Iniesta inside the box and Don Andres delays his pass and eventually cuts it back after sending Hosseini to the floor but Ezatolahi clears it for a corner in extravagant fashion.
66' Iniesta tries to find Carvajal on the right side of the box with a ball that's played through the line, bisecting the defence. But it's a touch too heavy and the Real Madrid wing back cannot retrieve it in time.
64' Quite a response this from Iran. They change gears and looks organized in attack as they move the ball forward with great gusto. But Hajsafi's cross from the left flank is cleared out of danger.
62' Ezatolahi was offside. The goal is disallowed.
61' MADNESS ERUPTS! IRAN HAVE EQUALIZED! Oh wait, it's going to be checked on VAR.

Oh, in fact, the goal stands cancelled. They're checking. VAR!
60' Ramos brings down Taremi and Iran have a freekick. 30 yards away from hoal. Rezaeian and Hajsafi standing by it.
59' Ebrahimi lobs a sumptuous cross into the box and Taremi rises to meet it but his header ends up 2 yards away from the near post.
58' Isco disco-s his way past Rezaeian, leaves him for dead and glides into he box but he can't get the final ball away.
58' Spain can't make anything happen from the corner once again.
57' Vazquez is fouled by Ansarifard. Spain have a freekick 35 yards away. Isco swings it in and Ezatolahi heads it clear for a corner.
55' Ansarifard plays a lovely backheel pass and Hajsafi is running into the defensive ranks of Spain but the defenders are up for the challenge and thwart another Iran attack convincingly.
54' DIEGO COSTA SCORES! Told y'all that he's going to be the difference maker. Iniesta gets on the balla nd plays a lovely one-two with Silva before finding Costa in the area. And Hosseini tries to clear it but the ball takes a deflection off Costa and goes. Rather fortunate, I must say but Costa will take it.
52' Karim Ansardifard fires it at goal from inside the area and his shot is just whiskers away from the post. What a chance for Iran! What a moment that would've been?!
51' Isco skies one! Carvajal with some clever play down the right flank releases Vazquez to the edge of the area. He cuts it back and Isco shoots first time, but his shot is headed straight for row Z.
49' Yet another chance for Spain as Busquets goes for goal from outside the box. This time Bieranvand hurls himself in the air and gets a strong right hand to stop the ball! Corner for Spain but it comes to nothing. But Spain are finally breaking the shackles.
48' Another chance goes begging as Busquets' header falls for Pique and the centre-back's shot is cleared.
48' Lucas Vazquez early ball into the box is too deep for Diego Costa but they win a corner anyway.
47' Jordi Alba puts a grounded ball into the area but Pouraliganji clears the danger.
46' Isco, on the left flank, tries to dance past Rezaeian and into the box but he is denied a route and the ball bounces off him and out for a goalkick.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! Iran have kicked off the second half.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! It's halftime. Iran 0-0 Spain. Rather underwhelming performance by Spain. Stay tuned for the second half.
48' Iran have a freekick on the left flank. They take it quick but end up making nothing of it.
46' Best chance of the game for Spain yet. Silva combines well with Iniesta at the edge of the area and Silva gets a shot away. It gets a meaty deflection but flies out for a corner. The corner comes to nothing though.
45' 3 minutes added on. Yawn.
42' Costa wastes possession and concedes a goalkick as the evening grows more and more frustrating.
40' Great opportunity for Spain as Alba whips one into the box and Silva traps it like a sack of sand but Rezaeian closes him down before Silva can put the finishing touch to it.
38' Did Diego Costa just stamp on Beiranvand's foot? He gets a talking to. This bully, man.
37' Hajsafi is being helped out of the ground. He is limping. There's some movement on Iran's bench and a change looks imminent.
36' Rezaeian motors down the left side and crosses it in but Ramos heads it clear. Iran could pull off a shock, eh? Imagine the scenes.
34' Iran have a throw-in on the left flank and Hajsafi takes it long but it is dealt with rather comfortably by Spain's old guard.
33' Isco once again swivels past a defender before Rezaeian clatters into him and condemns him to the ground.
31' Isco slaloms past 2 Iranian defenders and goes for goal. But it's a rather tame attempt and does not test the keeper.
29' Iniesta and Isco combine to weave some magic in the final third and Isco flicks it back to Iniesta who cuts it back. But Hosseini sends it out for a corner. The corner is taken deep into the box and Pique heads it back into the 6 yard box where Silva goes for an awkward shot but it goes way over the crossbar.
26' Carvajal clips the ball into the box and it is headed straight at Silva but Isco intervenes needlessly and Iran see the ball clear.
25' Spain are still finding it hard to pick their passes in the final third and this time it's Costa's backheel pass meant for Iniesta that foils their attack.
24' Silva's freekick takes a deflection and it could have gone anywhere but it is diverted straight into the hands of Beiranvand.
24' Silva will take the freekick.
23' Meanwhile, Ezatolahi is down on the ground and is receiving treatment.
22' Busquets is tackled from behind by Azmoun and Spain have a freekick 5 yards outside the box.
21' Ramos hits the freekick straight at the wall and it bounces off it and rests easy in Beiranvand's hands.
21' Ezatolahi concedes a freekick 25-40 yards away from goal and Ramos will take it.
19' Jordi Alba tries to play a quick give and go with Vazquez but he loses the ball and Spain concede a freekick.
17' Iran are defending deep and try to weave an intricate attacking play and Silva has some space in the box and he gets a shot away but Iran put in bodies and deflect it out of danger.
15' Taremi swings in a ball from the right flank and it is served right into the danger area but it goes past everyone and rolls out of danger.
14' Azmoun goal for goal from outside the box and it ends up punching the advertising hoardings.
12' Some dolphinball activity later Sergio Busquets is fouled Azmoun who stamps on the Barcelona man's right foot. Spain haven a freekick. Silva floats it in and it is headed in towards the centre of the box for Ramos. But he can't control it and Iran clear the danger.
9' Silva's ball is dangerous but nobody really commits and it whizzes past all the bodies that had lined up in the box.
9' Isco dances past Ebrahimi but the latter trips him over. Spain get a freekick on the left wing. Silva might swing this into the area.
8' Sardar Azmoun is clattered into by Sergio Ramos and receives some treatment before Iran resume play with a freekick.
6' Pique heads clear from the freekick and the follow up shot by Amiri is sent probing into space.
5' Amiri wins a freekick near the left corner flag as Carvajal pushes him to the ground from behind.
2' Spain passing the ball around rather comfortably so far but they are yet to make inroads into the final third.
1' Spain concede the first freekick of the game as Busquets tugs at Ezatolahi's shirt and sends him tumbling.
PEEEEEEEEEEEEP! And it's lights, camera, action at the Kazan Arena. Hierro's Spanish boys will attack from right to left on the tv screen.

If you can rightly guess which way Iran's attacking, let us know in the group chat. (Pushed it, didn't I?)
Sergio Ramos has a goatee now. Um, what is he thinking now?
The teams are walking out of the tunnel as we're speaking. There's a lot at stake here and as both teams walk out to the Kazan Arena, Spain will want to make sure they do not commit mistakes and Iran will want to ensure that they never sleep at the wheel.

Iran are clad in red and Spain have their silver/white kit on.

Iran vs Spain: Team News

Iran are punching above their weight and they'll hope that they can put up a fight against the La Furia Roja. It is unlikely that Carlos Quieroz will shuffle his pack and is expected to field the 11 that snatched a late victory against Morocco.

Masoud Shojaei, who was subbed off in the second half, is expected to start as well.

Spain have no injuries either and will make sure they use all the firepower they have to make an impact tonight.

Iran vs Spain: Probable lineups

: Ali Beiranvand, Ramin Rezaeian, Morteza Pouraliganji, Pejman Montazeri, Masoud Shojaei, Saeid Ezatolahi, Ehsan Haji Safi, Omid Ebrahimi; Vahid Amiri, Sardar Azmoun, and Alireza Jahanbakhsh

Spain: David De Gea; Nacho, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba; Sergio Busquets, Koke; Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Isco; Diego Costa

Iran vs Spain: Form guide

Iran: W-W-L-W-W

Iran is in good form. They've only lost to Turkey in their last 5 games. They had beaten Algeria, Uzbekistan and Lithuania in the build up to the World Cup. And they beat Morocco in their first match of the 2018 World Cup campaign.

Spain: D-W-D-W-D

Spain drew with Germany and Switzerland in the pre-World Cup friendlies. They dismantled Argentina and edged past Tunisia. And of course, they played the most entertaining match of this World Cup so far, against Portugal. The game ended 3-3.

Iran vs Spain: Head to Head

They've never played against each other before.

Iran vs Spain: Key Players

The Spain squad is replete with world-class players but Diego Costa could, once again, be the difference maker.

Sardar Azmoun, who was prolific in Iran's World Cup qualifying campaign, will be a player to keep an eye out for. He plies his trade in the Russian Premier League and plays for Rubin Kazan. So there's one lad who won't have trouble with the conditions at play.
